The new Ventrac Fine Cut and Fast Cut Flail Mowers are in a class of their own. With the out-front mounted design unique to Ventrac, these mower decks offer the ability to turn tall or dense areas into a quality finish cut for fast and efficient property management. Flail mowers are a perfect choice for any overgrown area with a variety of different types of vegetation. Add Ventrac’s capabilities to mow difficult areas such as slopes, wet areas, or retention basins, and these mowers will step up your game when it comes to maintaining any property.
Various markets will find the Ventrac Flail mowers a labor-saving tool for areas that do not always require weekly mowing. For golf courses, the Ventrac flail mowers are perfect for native areas, designated wildflower zones, walking paths, and more. The Ventrac Flail mowers are ideal for municipalities, landscape contractors, estate managers, and tree growers.
The two available models, Fine Cut and Fast Cut, feature unique knife options and offer two width options for more versatility of cut, speed, and application. Cutting widths for the decks are 56” and 72” wide and offer the most versatility for specific property needs.
The Fine Cut Flail (MW560/MW720) is equipped with scoop knives, and it will achieve a quality cut with a more finished look on grassy material that gets mowed 3 to 8 times per year.
The Fast Cut Flail (MY560/MY720) features Y knives, and it is for a dense or brush- type material application. The Fast Cut is a good choice for areas of overgrown brush and vines that do not require regular mowing, but you still want a better finish result than a typical rotary rough-cut mower.

I am definitely buying this deck for my 4500z. I have two Ventracs and they are by far the best all around tractors I have ever had. I have 100 acres of land and my Ventracs get it done. I would recommend a Ventrac to anyone that needs a versatile piece of equipment.

I thought flailing was what Bernie Sanders does when he speaks. Thanks for the explanation of Flail. The result of the mowing still leaves stems and stalks behind. So, typically, would there be basically one to three more passes to make it look real good? You say two feet high. There are properties here in rural Florida that I have seen as high as eight feet. Crazy. The property across from me had lots of high brush and one inch stalked trees. The clearance guy came in with a big old tractor and created gullies everywhere. What a mess. This was a five acre lot. After clearing everything and burning he had to use the eight ft rake to smooth out the land befor reseeding. But even then the land was rough. The owners are bringing in show horses. I get concerned about them tripping up in the ditches. When I did golf courses in the early seventies, we used heavy mechanized rollers to completely smooth things out. We had a lot of equipment for building these golf courses. That was Connecticut where the soil is much different feom Florida. Our soil is very soft in some areas. In fact, shamefully, a motorhome I own was set on dirt and not concrete pads and now it is sunk one foot into the soil. I need a heavy duty tow truck to fix this. Point being, soil and clay and stone and trees give us challenges that I think the Ventrac line can pretty much take care of with somewhat minimal damage. Thanks for the intro!

@robertwilkinson2303
@robertwilkinson2303 3 года назад
On any flail, you’re going to have a ton of knives to replace. Flails are better suited to hitting obstacles and surviving
@ventrac
@ventrac 3 года назад
Maintenance is tricky. When you finally do wear out an entire set of knives, it will be a little bit more expensive to replace a whole set over blades on a tough cut. The nice thing is, if you hit something hard - it's likely that you'll just take out a knife or two and then it's much cheaper to repair than if you would have hit the same thing with the tough cut and taken out a blade or potentially even a spindle too. So, it's a bit of both.... probably cheaper most of the time and then a little more at full replacement intervals. Initial purchase price is significantly more on the flail as it's a much more complex attachment.
@bradleyschneider2220
@bradleyschneider2220 3 года назад
You typically don't wear out the whole set at once, plus the Y knives I believe can be turned around as they are sharpened on both edges. I have not seen the Y knives up close, but I used to turn mine, do a quick touchup on spares so they were ready to put on as needed.

You mentioned that you will be offering two 56" mowers, one with Y type cutters and one with hammer cutters. If you bought the mower with the Y type cutters, can you just swap out the cutter heads to the hammer type? Also, typical flail movers with hammer type heads will cut woody material up to approx. 2 in. Will yours do this also?
@ventrac
@ventrac 3 года назад
If you swap the entire rotor, yes. These knives are much lighter than cast hammer-type knives so 2" material is beyond where we are rating it for continuous use. Between the two models, the Y knives are actually better suited for thicker woody material.... there's more mass to them and they dice up heavy material better.

This is designed more for knocking down tall grass quickly and cleanly and not for chopping up branches? Would this be effective in a commercial orchard where cuttings are lined up to be chopped up by flails? So excited for this!
@bradleyschneider2220
@bradleyschneider2220 3 года назад
I think depending on how thick the cuttings are you could do just that. I used to run a rear mount unit on a sub compact tractor and mowed over a lot of trimmings along trails the result was a mulch that went back into the soil. I would get the Y knives to do that type mowing.
@ventrac
@ventrac 3 года назад
It should do well in that setting as long as the branches aren't too big. Make sure you go for the Fast Cut model with the Y knives for this application.

At 2:14 you say, "In terms of Ventrac attachments, our TOUGH CUT will be better at woody, "stemmy "material and high volume material where you're trying to go a lot FASTER. The flail mower will do almost as much of that, but it will look a lot nicer when you're done. The only penalty you pay to the TOUGH CUT is that you have to go a little bit SLOWER." So my question would be- Which is it? Do you have to go slower with the Tough Cut or slower with the Flail Mower? It seems like you may have meant, "The only penalty you pay to the FLAIL MOWER is that you have to go a little bit slower."
@garyh7048
@garyh7048 3 года назад
Awesome attachment! But my understanding is that flail mowers can only go in one direction, forward. Is that the the case with these new ones?
@ventrac
@ventrac 3 года назад
Kind of, but it's really no more the case with the flail than any of our mowing decks. They are all designed to cut moving forward. While backing up, they still cut, but not quite as well. That has less to do with the actual cutting style and more to do with the deck shell. It would be an interesting test to cut exclusively in reverse with this deck and see what happens. Theory would suggest it would do better than the tough cut because the tough cut is rear discharge with very little mulching. If the flail was run backwards (forcing it to have a harder time discharging) it would just keep the material in the drum longer and keep mulching. Any way, interesting question - probably not a difference enough from any other deck to make or break the operation of it....and in some cases, maybe better.

At 0:19 seconds in for example, I see stocks of some of the tougher weeds left behind after your flail mower runs over that area. I know why this is happening, but I can't help but think if your engineers put there heads together they could figure out a way to make sure those are cut off also.
@bradleyschneider2220
@bradleyschneider2220 3 года назад
Leaving some stalky material may be a result of which knives are on that particular mower and the height. I mowed some tall tough grasses with the duck foot blades and at 4" it cut everything perfectly, but at 5" it left some stems sticking up. This deck will require some expertise that you will acquire over time. I have run small flails and the same thing happened to me, but once I got a setting that worked it ran fine. For example I would back into a tall, over 6', wild blackberries and the flail would cut most, but then as I drove forward all that was left was mulch. This unit will be slightly different being front mounted, but the cut that can be achieved will exceed anything a bush hog will produce. This is my opinion, but I think I'm pretty close.
@johnevans6053
@johnevans6053 3 года назад
@@bradleyschneider2220 Could it be that the front of the unit is pushing the weeds over and laying them down before they get to the cutter head? This is why I wanted the Ventrac engineers to solve this problem. If they could solve this problem so that it doesn't need to be run over twice to get acceptable results... then they would really have something. It should cut everything cleanly no mater what height you select.

The fine cut 72 inch causes my 4500P ventrac to overheat within 30 mins even if not going too fast, or up steep hills. The coolant is full and there is no build up of seeds or dead grass over the grate in front. Possibly the 56 inch will not cause this overheating? Or a fast cut vs fine cut? If it were not for the overheating, everything else about my flail is awesome, but this is a bit of a deal breaker.

The deck shells are the same but the rotors are balanced to the knife style that is ordered. The fine cut flail does really well on finish turf like a normal lawn. Overall, you'll notice a little worse cut quality than a rotary deck if you're cutting small amounts of grass off, but for some people it's acceptable. It depends on your threshold for what kind of cut quality that you want. If you're cutting in wet or overgrown lawns, the flail will actually be a lot BETTER than the finish mower.

If you damage one knife it should only take a minute or two to swap a new one in once you have the deck flipped up and ready. If you're only using it for tall pasture grass, go for the Y knives and the finish will still be really good. If you want to use it also on shorter finish grass, go for the scoop knives and even those will work on the pasture - they'll just require a little slower travel speed.

@@ventrac so would you think I could use this as my main finish mower and cut my Bermuda grass as well or better than the typical finish mower?

@@jasonbarber8107 It depends what your expectations are and what cut height you're used to cutting at. Definitely grab a demo to be sure.
