Re: low speed. The speed capacitor values on the new Originals are 7.5+4.5, with both sides of the cap activated for medium (so 12). Straight out of the box, the 7.5 side of the speed cap is wired to slot 3 on the switch. On my Original, I swapped the two leads for the medium and low speeds so that the 4.5 side of the capacitor activated for low

The round hole is indicative of a cast iron faceplate, and no hole is stamped, the finish does not matter, I have an antique brass fan with a cast iron one and one with a stamped one. The only exception is 36” originals. However in 1988 all plated finish originals got stamped faceplates in a different style, where the vents curve inside a little bit
@BroadcastBuddy
@BroadcastBuddy 2 года назад
I just bought a new original and the lower louver is die cast, NOT iron. The factory did do an excellent job matching cast iron finish on it though.

wonder what causes the buzz on the original. i recently just got an ‘88 and it only has an ever so slightly buzz on slow, dead silent on medium and high. i’d argue the new skeletal motors are quieter motors as a whole, but don’t have quite the value of the original USA ones.

If only there was a 4 speed 4 wire pull chain switch, then capacitor wouldn't have to be changed or added for 4th speed. It would be good if there was a 4 speed pull chain that would go L-1, L-2-3, L-2, L-3. Also today's Hunter Original remote kit would give skeletal Original real low speed. Also it's good to deep clean Original sometimes, and that might be a good time to replace the capacitor as well.

You could slow down low speed on Original just by swapping wires between "2" and "3" of chain switch, medium speed will not be affected since both "2" and "3" are used on medium. I believe that's what whoisthisguy724 did on his Original.

I prefer functional low so its fine with me but best would b for them to use a 4 speed swtich to give both low and fast lows like i do on any of my 'custom' fans best way to impment it would be an L1 L2+3 LL2 L3 swtich

There must be a way to measure CFM, although I don’t trust the ratings on Home Depot‘s website. I bought a new Hunter Royal Oak and it’s rated at 4100, one of my old Hampton Bays is rated at 4300, but it makes nowhere near the air the Hunter does.
@dspiffy

The testing sucks.

@casablancahunter1606 2 года назад
You can always check the energy guide for the actual CFM.
@CeilingFanVideosOnYT

Requirement changed few years ago. That instead of CFM on high speed it was weighted average between high and low. That’s why it’s lower.
@CeilingFanVideosOnYT
@CeilingFanVideosOnYT 2 года назад
And the truth is that both make absolutely no air. Cause ceiling fans don't make air, they move air. But I see what you mean, your Hampton Bay doesn't move nearly as much air as your Hunter Royal Oak.

In terms of motors and airflow between the two, your older Original is moving faster and likely is moving more air. But Originals of that era varied pretty wildly in terms of speed and performance, and your unit is fast for a post-R52 Original, at roughly 215 RPM on high speed (most are around 195-200 RPM). The new Original is right about what I would expect from a '90s US 2amp Original, at roughly 200 RPM on high. Compared to the older shaded pole Originals and the earlier 1.1amp/2amp PSC ones, the current skeletal motor (as of 2015) is equivalent to those. The earlier (2002-2014) skeletal motor fans with the half length main bearing shafts were weaker performers than every other generation of Originals. American patriotism aside, the best Originals in terms of build quality has been this second generation of Taiwanese ones (2015-current); the quality control has been great on them, and the return to the 4" main bearing shafts eliminated the oil drainage issues some of the 1st gen Taiwanese Originals had. By the way, the blades of all the current Originals are overlaid with PVC instead of a wood veneer to prevent warpage when the fans are installed outdoors.
@whoisthisguy724
@whoisthisguy724 3 года назад
Part of the reason the R&M is fast is because Hunter, back in the day, pitched the Adaptair blades slightly shallower than the standard “C” brackets and even the Reverse-Aire brackets. Reverse-Aire Originals also tend to be slower because the brackets are THAT much heavier and they weigh down the shaded pole motor, which runs with relatively low torque compared to the earlier, beefier 1.9A shaded pole motor or the PSC motors made from 1984-2002. In terms of performance, the 2.5A shaded pole motor and the 2002-2014 proprietary spinner motor are about neck and neck, with the 2.5 rated at 7,000 CFM in Hunter literature of the day, and the 2002 motor rated at 6,900 CFM. When Hunter was redesigning the spinner motor to incorporate the old, full length main shaft, they also adjusted the capacitor values resulting in a performance increase. The new motors, from my testing, are a rough equal to the PSC motors; 7,560 CFM vs. the 1984 motor’s 7,600 CFM. Of course the testing standards have been revised so those are the old numbers. The new number is in the 4000s but the performance of the fan hasn’t changed
@dspiffy
@dspiffy 3 года назад
I maintain that the best Originals are the 3 speed 4 blade models. Also, I have found a lot of performance variations among the R&M 2 speed models.
@whoisthisguy724
@whoisthisguy724 3 года назад
@@dspiffy no argument from me. The 1984-92 1.1A motors provide the best balance between air movement and energy efficiency, hands down
@jerrystoner2010
@jerrystoner2010 3 года назад
@@whoisthisguy724 Very interesting; I wonder why Hunter didn't just continue with the 1.9A shaded pole motor up until they switched to PSC, especially since the 2.5A looks to be a regression in both performance and efficiency compared to that one. The new testing standards average out the low and high speed airflows, hence the 4,710 CFM rating. But when you dig for it, there is current information on the high speed CFM of these Originals; it's now rated at 6716 CFM on high speed (found this at Lightingnewyork.com and Hansen wholesale); considering the fact that CFMs are now tested in an actual room instead of on a suspended electrical box with a cylinder over the fan and the numbers tend to be lower than they were before, that's a strong reading for a 52" fan with traditional paddle-style blades. Hunter struck an excellent balance between performance and efficiency with these; they draw the same amount of power as the earlier skeletal motor fans but perform better. Overall though, my favorite Originals were the '84-'92 1.1A ones, though the 2A models had some of my favorite finish options.
