Very helpful, the Hunter site and other videos were worthless. My 2002 fan had a slotted screw for the oil port on the lower part, below the motor housing. And I actually enjoyed your long, rambling explanation.

I recommend using video editing software and writing out a script in addition the iPhone tripod you considered. People are looking for How to Oil a Ceiling Fan. Cut to the chase and give clear and direct audio. This video is 8 minutes long with about 45 seconds of useful information.

Wow! Thank you so much. You saved me hundreds of dollars. My Hunter 23865a was making some noise and was slow to start rotation when I hit the fan speed wall switch it was on . I looked at the Hunter site and others at the manuals they had and it said there was an oil hole on the top but I couldn't find it. Another video showed one on the top even with a nice little cap like old fashion devices. But mine didn't seem to... until your video pointed out that certain model years had a set screw at the top of the reservoir under, rather than on top, of the fan. Adding oil in that position is a little bit of a pain, but other than that it worked like a charm. Heck I was pulling the lower portion looking for a non-existent capacitor to change. I was getting ready to get a new fan speed control wall switch. But, all I needed was to find that hole and add some oil. You are the man!

When I got my first Hunter Original yesterday and I picked it up, I spilled oil all over myself because I didn't know about the oil bath system. XD I wish I saw this video before then, but anyway thanks for uploading this. I can't wait to get my Original up and running.

There's actually a newer video that's a lot clearer. I don't have a 2002-2005 fan or I would do a video on it. Highly recommend taking them down and doing an oil change on them over to a synthetic oil. 0w20 is fine. The 2002-2005 fans will eventually fail, flawed design. 90--95% of them have failed. Those fans helped to put the nail in the coffin of the original.

Thank you for helping me as I just scored my first of the EARLIEST of the early overseas originals, one made the 46th week of 2002, and the other the 2nd week of 2003 and I was curious how to oil them. I scored these at a price of $20 a piece for 2 plain white Originals and I should have a video up within a week.
@mrfanman2u

There's a plug in the side of the switch housing. That's where you oil them, but you must lean the motor over at a 25 degree angle and hold it there to fill it. These actually have a seal and may still have oil in them.

Thank you for your informative video. I bought three 52" Hunter Originals (when they were made by Robbins Meyers) in 1984-85. I want to move them from where they are now because the house is being torn down. I think it would be best to remove at least some of the oil. Can you suggest a way to do that (tipping to one side or something else)? Also I originally had them mounted on a vaulted ceiling so I had longer down rods. Now I want to mount them on a regular 8' ceiling. I still have the short pipe nipples but they are very corroded from being in flood waters so the threads are not in good shape. Do you know how I can get some more? The new Hunter company doesn't sell the 2 1/2" length and they claim to have changed the diameter. Thanks for any help.

My Hunter Original has no brass oil port as well. The oil port is still in the same place, however it's just a hole, there is no brass plug. Look at the top of your fan and you should see a tiny hole unlike the rest, that's where you put oil. I'm not sure if all Originals are like this, but my oil port is on the same side of the fan where the "Hunter Building the Best for 100 Years" stamp is. If this doesn't fix your fan, than you might need to take it apart and clean it or have a professional look at it like someone who restores old fans.

I heard that you're NOT supposed to use zoomspout on Originals because of the "oil bath" system Originals use. Hunter makes specialized oil for Originals and its $6 at Home Depot and you can even find it on Amazon, so I would highly recommend the Hunter Original oil.

I have a Hunter Model 25574 which is the 1.1 amp fan built in 1985. It has a slow oil leak that gets comes down on the outside of the switch housing. Not sure how an oil leak is possible. Anyone know how to repair an oil leak on a Model 25574 Hunter Fan?
@mrfanman2u
@mrfanman2u 5 лет назад
tandspinter. If it is only coming down the outside of the switch housing and no where else, there are only a couple possibilities. 1. switch housing is loose and spinning 2. overfilled on oil 3. foreign body (usually a bug or something) making the oil swash around in the cup. 4. Excessive fan wobble which will cause a full oil cup to slosh the oil out as there is no seal or otherwise. Check the oil with a pipe cleaner first. You can message me on facebook on Brian's Little Halfway House for Derelict Fans

@ricklafford8993
@ricklafford8993 8 лет назад
A Hunter Original will certainly operate but will get noisy and eventually stop if left without oil. This doesn't apply to all Hunter fans.
@McIntosh1581
@McIntosh1581 7 лет назад
I know you have to add oil to a Hunter Original time to time, but they sure will last a lifetime if you keep them lubricated properly. We have a really old antique one in our house that still runs like a top. I'm glad that Hunter still produces their original ceiling fan. Pure old school classic.
@showbizcec4985
@showbizcec4985 6 лет назад
Just check on it every 3 or 6 months if possible. This fan could live on in your family for generations if you maintain it. It's not supposed to run on low or no oil. This can cause damage to the fans moving parts.
@showbizcec4985
@showbizcec4985 6 лет назад
Well, at least this is true for the Originals and some other old and old style fans. Not all Hunters use this system. Most Hunters and most modern fans now a days you just hang up and you don't ever have to worry about oilling them. The Originals are not like this however.

@rplautz1000

Terrible advice! You never ever want to fill the oil well in such manner that you see the oil running out even when the housing is tipped to one said. If you do, when you turn on the fan you will get oil all over your furniture and clothes. If you have a light kit, the oil will run out the light fixture openings or if you have a closed lighting fixture such as the "school house" model, you will see oil collecting and trapped at the bottom of the fixture. Measure the oil solely with a bent pipe cleaner while the oil well is stationary and level with the floor. Bend the pipe cleaner at a 90-degree angle, no more than one inch from the end of the pipe cleaner. Make it look like an "L." Stick the bent end of the pipe cleaner into the oil well opening. If it comes out with oil, your fine. If it comes out dry, add a few drops at a time and remeasure. Allow one minute between each remeasuring. Better to take your time rather than have oil all over you and the room. Years ago, Hunter had a diagram about this on their website. It's now gone. But they did sell pipe cleaners. Wonder why?
@mrfanman2u
@mrfanman2u 5 лет назад
2002-2005 fans, you cannot check the oil with a pipe cleaner. There is a seal in the top of the switch housing. You have to check it by opening the plug and leaning to the high side.
