Best method I have ever seen. I will try it. Because I never succeeded yet the heel position with my dog. He understands basic commands and is very obedient but way too hyper and playful when wanting to walk and he just does not want to walk properly. But this method seems promising. Thank you.
@@Gundog12 Hi. My dog is actually doing great. Im not really concentrating on his heel command on a competitive level, however when I walk him, he walks right next to me. This technique really helped a lot.
I haven’t been able to get my dog to heal for anything and he is a clone of this dog - size, behavior, color - all of it. I have listened to so many people, healing sticks, constant ecollar pressure and none of it made sense to me; it also caused other problems namely anxiety. I got my dog back from a trainer who clearly was very heavy on the ecollar with the heal from the blind to the line which caused him to be extremely vocal and a blubbering mess. I had little success because the conditioning process was not well understood or the collar was not introduced properly - I could tell right away when the collar came out the shirking and cowering began. - there was no success until I did this, and it works like magic along with the anxiety being gone. Now my dogs know they are getting ready to work and get excited when I pull the collar out. IMO the most important part of this video is even the most excitable dogs need to maintain a positive attitude and have fun! Otherwise, it becomes associated with pain and anxiety - the opposite of what motivates any creature including us! I also think this method slows the brain down a little bit. I am so glad I found this video and all of Bill’s videos - especially his online training system which I highly recommend. hope I can attend a seminar! Thanks 🙏!
you can do the something with out the e collar. It's the same thing he's doing just with out the e collar. he's already practice with the dog. don't be shocked if this don't happen for u this fast. If your trying this with out the e collar just do everything he's doing and if the dog pulls just stop and make them sit and try again
Featured Pitbull He is reinforcing a command the dog is already doing. He said use the heel command only once. There is more to it and he might have some free videos explaining why he does that.
I too find this somewhat confusing, since the nick is elsewhere defined as a small correction, and we see no ground for a correction. But Hillman himself elsewhere explains how it is used as reinforcement, not as a correction. What amazes me is how fast dogs seem to learn with only voice and hand rewards, and no treats at all.
Why the nick after the sit command. The sequence is heel......dog heels. Then he says "sit".....dog sits then there is a well timed "very small" nick after the dog sits. There is a great deal of precise repetition that does not fall into the repeating a command over and over category. Dog does the sequence correctly and the sit (dog on sit) receives a very small nick as reinforcement. If this is understood......it is not much different than simply say "good". To clarify this, a dog in an AKC OB class will be place on sit and then receive reinforcing "tugs" on his collar via the leash. This is exactly the same effect. It is important to note that the small nick is not a correction. Recently, the pup I was collar conditioning, would indicate feeling a nick by blinking her eyes, That same level I could not feel. It was a 10 on scale of 100. Nothing registered for me until reaching about 22.....barely perceptible. It should be added that a correction is different yet very doable and fair for those that train with some common sense. Not all "nicks" are the same size and understanding that is part of the finesse of a skilled trainer. When training is driven by "must do" instead of "want to" you not "doing Hillmann".
Perhaps I’m missing some of the nuances of the method, being visually impaired by the left to right smoke screen from the camera man’s ‘baccy habit, but I fail to see any relationship between elevating the dog’s prey drive with the fun dummies and the heeling/sit drills. This “new way” appears to be little more than an attempted application of the Premack principle. During the fun fetches, the dog reveals some good genes. However, the moment heel cue is dropped, often the moment the dummy is out of play, the dog totally checks out, his drive goes into neutral, even reverse. This shows that at least one other person senses the disconnect between the fetch and heel/sit, namely the dog. The Premack principle is a superlative tool, when used correctly. While I agree with Bill that one must avoid nagging with repetitive cues and leash pops, as far as I can see he is merely tradition the aversive leash pops with remote nicks on the e-collar. I am serious about the dogs drive slipping into reverse using this method. For the collar nicks, irregardless of the dog’s performance of the cue/command is literally the textbook scenario for developing learned helplessness in a dog. Look at American psychologist, Martin Seligman’s research on dogs touching this learned state back in the late ‘60s. The second part of his experiment involving the shock floors and shuttle box is remarkable in principle to the method advanced here.
Jon Bailey I used to think the nick is a minor correction, but he uses it differently. He conditions the dog using the lowest stimulation as a positive. There is more in the comments of some of his other videos
Hiding the toy cause he’s scared of the dog. Do NOT hide the toy. Have it in plain view. The dog has to respect the command even if toy tapping the dog on nose! This guy clearly is a amateur who took up a new hobby. Has a lot to learn. But that’s ok.
Xander Valltessa He knows what he is doing. He has trained multiple field champions. He is not hiding the toy. He is just holding it in his arm pit so his hands are free. This is a heeling video. I think we all have a lot to learn. Please, don’t make ignorant negative comments.
