The old internal links start with "obsidian:" and the web links start with "https:". Your computer knows that any link that starts "obsidian:" should open up the Obsidian Desktop application, and anything that starts "https:" should open up your default web browser. Bending Spoons are migrating toward just having web links. These will open up in the browser first and log into your Evernote account. After checking your preferences it will notice that you prefer to see these in your desktop application. It will then redirect by changing the address from "https:" to "obsidian:". This will instruct your broswer to ask your operating system to start the Obsidian desktop app and pass the link. However a webpage is not allowed to arbitrarily launch programs on your desktop. So the first time you try this it will ask you to allow it (these is a checkbox to say "remember my choice" so that you can avoid it asking everytime. Published notes always open in the browser. As it just displays the public version and doesn't log it, it never redirects to your desktop app. Hopefully, Bending spoons will figure out a way of automatically closing the browser tab if it succesfully launches the desktop app.

I always use APP link. This is a problem. Offline app-link can work, but if it always go to the web, offline use is impossible. Evernote is going the wrong way.

Don't lose hope just yet 😉. I'm bringing all the comments similar to yours to Evernote's attention.

Thanks for the explanations, which correspond exactly to my tests. Using the Web-Link in other applications (instead of the App-Link) and defining the choice so that the note opens in the application is a real disaster, it takes a long time and is really frustrating. Once again, I notice that Bending Spoons doesn't use Evernote intensively, otherwise it wouldn't make this kind of change.

Helpful, thankyou. Unfortunately I can't get it to work on Windows (Chrome + Windows desktop app). If I leave it on "ask every time" I can manually go from Evernote on the the web to my desktop app. If I change the setting to "Desktop app" it just stays on the web version and dosn't automatically go the desktop version. I've linked to this video from an ongoing discussion thread about the topic on the Evernote forum.

Not sure if this is the case there, but here's something you can try. The first choice setting has to always be done on the browser. And that setting is shown on a pop-up box. Meaning that if you have Chrome set to block pop-ups, you'll never see it.

I definitely need both the app link and the web link. Actually, I use the app link to a note more than the web link. From other apps that is, inside Evernote and between notes I only use the @-linking option. Example: From todoist projects I use the app link to open a project’s note in Evernote quick and easy. From Notion on the other hand I have to use the web link, as Notion doesn't recognize local app links and doesn’t make them clickable, so I have to use the web link there. Opening a note in the desktop app via a web link takes forever before it opens in the desktop app, and also leaves an ”orphaned” browser window/tab behind. Confusing that the app link copy feature is gone from the three-dot menu, while still available in the top menu and the right-click option in the notes list. (That it shows the keyboard shortcut as being the same for both the app link and the web link is annoying, but I guess should be corrected soon.)

I'm so glad to hear that. I was having such a hard time trying to find the best way to communicate this.

It is a big kooky but I get it now. Thx

You are right. This is the result of new features on top of old ones for years In a row. It's so hard to explain, but I'm so glad Bending Spoons is dealing with all these legacy inconsistencies.

@@vladcamposagreed-they are really improving the product and getting more streamlined and useful. I am enjoying the direction it is going. As of now, I keep my todo list and calendar separate but I can see myself moving to Evernote as my all-in-one application someday. Just not yet!
