MORE ABOUT THIS REVIEW
In May 2019 Weboost released their latest mobile cell phone booster, the Drive Reach. It feels solid and has a very attractive red metal finish with antennas similar to its predecessor the Drive 4G-X. Both boosters claim to boost cell phone signals up to 50 dB. Yet Weboost claims the Drive Reach is the more powerful of the two boosters. How so you ask?
How does the Drive Reach compare to the drive 4G-X?
The Drive Reach has more uplink power giving it the ability to reach cell towers that are further away. In the video I was able to perform a real-life test in a remote location to test this. The results may surprise you as they surprised me.
Other than being red, slightly heavier and providing more “reach” for distant cell towers, the Drive Reach is very similar to the Drive 4G-X. The Reach also has upgraded push-in coax connections that simplify installation.
Drive Reach Signal Boost Compared to Drive 4G-X?
In moderate signal areas, the Reach came out slightly ahead of the Drive 4G-X for boosting signal level by around 5 dB. Where it really shined was in its ability to reach distant cell towers. While testing the Drive Reach in a remote area, I was able to get a usable 4G signal when other boosters would only give me a 3G signal.

WeBoost makes some great products. We have a very remote place in Texas and use a combination of 3 different products in 3 buildings and they all work very well. The only issue we've had in 4 years is one of the little power transformers got zapped in a thunderstorm but we replaced it and were good to go again. 4G every time.

Good review. I am an RF engineer, and I'll tell you that TX PWR (uplink) does make a huge difference. Reason being, there's a canyon I commonly test these in where "I can hear the tower, but the tower can't hear me". If I don't have enough "uplink" TX power, I can't initiate a call! Also a tip for those that REALLY want the most signal, I place the back of my phone directly over the antenna pad, every inch away from it, you'll lose more dB. I also use that same signal app, - one of the best!

Wow, this was EXACTLY the video I was looking for. Our family has some rural land and we hardly get signal. I've been debating on the different boosters and doing extensive research and found the Drive Reach has the highest uplink power of any other booster that WeBoost has in the consumer market. I thought surely that a $999 Home Complete would be their best yet it only has a 24 db uplink, just like your Connect RV 65. I thought, how could a little Drive Reach be better than a whole home booster? Your test confirmed exactly what I was hoping it would prove, the 29 db uplink power has the clear advantage! Just amazing! I'm going to purchase the Drive Reach and maybe even try using a directional antenna with it (using an SMB to F-type adapter) if the little magnet antenna doesn't give me the results I need. Thanks again for posting this video!

Harold, have you bought the reach yet and tried it with different antennas? I'm torn between the connect65 and the reach using the connect65 antenna's. Weboost told me they haven't tested the reach in that matter. I would think the reach would perform better with the better antenna's used on the connect65. Unfortunately I can only afford to buy one, so I can't perform any testing of my own. I have the drive 4g-x RV booster currently. It works great but looking to upgrade to something more powerful. Thanks, Earl

When I was a telecom tech, we installed T1 circuits at different cell company's towers. I asked a cell company tech what was the difference between the cell companies. He told me that it was the power that they put out on their signals so as not to interfere with other companies. He admitted that at times in remote areas, they would boost the power a little more. Hmmmmmmm.

Another great video. Thanks. I am wondering if your last test where the Reach got a 4G signal was really 4G. I wonder if the booster picks up a cell signal with the outside antenna, cleans it up and amplifies it, and sends it back out the inside antenna, but always as a 4G signal. If that is correct then you might still be picking up a 3G signal and boosting it, but then sending it out inside the RV as a new 4G signal. Do you know if that is correct, or does it match the output protocol with the input protocol. I do not have a cell booster, so I can not check and test that myself. This is essentially how WIFI Boosters work. I have a WIFI Ranger, and it can pick up a older G or N WIFI protocol, but re-broadcast it in the RV as an AC protocol signal. Did you do a speed test in that case to see if that new signal that you were able to "reach" was any faster then with the other booster? Thanks for the video. I am going to be in the market for a cell booster soon and this helps a lot.

A single tower uses multi band antennas that broadcast the various bands. A 4G/LTE signal does not travel as far as 3G or 1X and is even more disrupted by vegetation and terrain. Boosters can only amplify the strongest ambient signal, so it would make sense that the reach would broadcast a stronger signal in the 4G/LTE spectrum in order to connect to that specific band at greater distance, usually band 13 with Verizon.

Have you ever put the anttena up a pole for even better signal or does it work best with the magnet on a larger 'ground plane' of the roof of the RV or car?
@RVwithTito
@RVwithTito 5 лет назад
I've found it works best with a larger ground plane. I believe it should be at least 5" in diameter steel plate. I used a double sized electrical faceplate mounted to my RV roof. Of course, if you were to put that on a pole, you might get improved results in certain areas with lots of trees or hills.

I get the car hookup, but would I be able to somehow use this to get better service in the travel trailer? I like the idea of turning on the hotspot and expanding the reach but not sure whether it would reach into the trailer. Also, the car need to be running for this thing to work in the vehicle correct? Since you have more experience with these products, might there be a more appropriate product for me other than the Reach?
@RVwithTito
@RVwithTito 5 лет назад
You will need to move all the components to the trailer when you're not driving. To simplify this, don't permanently run any of the cables in your vehicle. You may want to order a spare power adapter to make the switch easier.
@brucevangsnes7979
@brucevangsnes7979 5 лет назад
@@RVwithTito Thanks for chiming in. I really would like to get the Reach, but when I was on the phone with WeBoost, they don't have AC cord for the Reach, no other antenna with the right connections, so it seems like I may have to get the 4GX RV, mount the antenna on trailer, get an additional DC power cord, Mag antenna, and Inside antenna, and bring the main module into the car. That would avoid dragging everything back and forth. Not sure why I am not satisfied with this as my heart seems to be with the newest and best, the Reach. It seems like my best hope with the Reach would be if I lay my phone in the vehicle, turn on the hotspot and hope it reaches into the trailer as I am not sure I know where I would mount the minimag antennae on the trailer. I mounted the internal antenna on the back wall of my RV facing directly forward and down the hall toward the driver/passenger front seats. I’m installed a CLA tomorrow and will test my installation but I am very concerned that it sounds like you need to literally be on top of the interior antenna for the boost to be effective. WIlson tech support says they don’t have a longer cable yet available but I’m hoping for positive results. Why does the interior antenna need to be so close to the cellphone? Thank you for your help! Using the guideline of being 2’-3’ from the interior antenna would not even allow users in a van to get any value from the reach.

Hi Traci. It will depend on how/where you RV and which carrier you use. You may not even need one if your coverage is adequate where you typically travel. You might use your RV for a while and see if you'd benefit from a booster before spending the money. They are expensive. There are RV models, like the popular Drive 4G-X RV, that include other antenna options and are designed to be more of a permanent setup. The Drive Reach is designed for use in any vehicle and can be easily moved around. Weboost is also working on an RV version of the Drive Reach. So you might want to wait and see. Lots to consider :)

Do these boosters give you better cell signal where you can make calls/texts easier where they would normally be dropping calls or failing to send texts. Or do these boosters just extend the reach and allow for more internet service and not effect the calls/texts at all?

For the majority of situations you'll find yourself in I believe those antennas will do fine. Please do some more testing between the 65, reach and 4G-X. I have the 4G-X RV and was about to upgrade to the Connect RV 65 till this Reach came out. The Reach has the highest uplink gain. The 4g-x and 65 are about the same. So I'm wondering if the reach using a directional antenna and the panel inside antenna that come with the 65 would out perform the 65 in all remote areas. I'm sure they will eventually market the reach in a RV kit and maybe like the 65 with higher gain antennas. Keep up the excellent work!
@earlzeis35
@earlzeis35 5 лет назад
From what I read, the uplink is very important. More so than the downlink. My guess the downlink may just be the interior antenna limit. The 65 has a lot higher downlink gain than the 4gx but uses a panel antenna vs the desktop. Also the uplink gain is apparently more important than the max gain as well. I now plan to wait for more data to come available. Also they may release a Reach RV version with higher gains similar to the 65.

I contacted Weboost about using the reach with the connect65 antenna's and they said it hasn't been tested that way. So they recommended the connect65 for that reason. I'm still hoping you will do some testing between the connect65 and the reach with the connect65 antenna's. I would love to test them myself, but I can't spend the money it would take to buy both booster kits. I would think the reach with the connect65 antenna's would perform better than the Connect65 due to the uplink, but there is less boosting at 50db vs 65db. So I'm curious if the better uplink on the reach would outperform the higher db boosting of the connect65. I'd be willing to donate any adaptors you'd need. Thanks, Earl
