Paint it black with gold trim and make it look like the JPS Formula 1 cars from the 80’s. That would be really iconic. If you Google it, you can see a Capri in those colors.
I have to agree it would look good in the JPS LIVERY but and a BIG BUT capris are getting quite rare nowadays so I personally believe it needs to stay looking as standard as possible and we all know that Ben will have it looking absolutely fantastic by the time he finishes just look at the quality of the spray job he did on the mini
Hello Ben love your vlog I can't stop watching them I'm a pensioner of 76 I think you are so clever what you do with cars good luck and than you, Alan from Suffolk.
I own a black Capri Laser myself and think that’s the best colour. Therefore I’m going to say keep it black with original Laser decals on the outside and make it a sleeper. I got my wheels diamond cut with back inserts and it’s a huge improvement on the standard silver, especially on a black car. I’m interested to see how the engine conversion goes as it might give me ideas of my own!
Been following you since the Bedford Rascal & love the videos! I’d keep it externally standard 1.6 Laser & respray it factory black with new decals etc. Back in 86 my brother had a Paris Blue C reg 1.6 Laser (I was 10 years old) & I absolutely adored the look of it but even then I knew it wasn’t fast 😂 Great memories & really looking forward to the next video.
Keep it black Ben it’s the best colour for a Capri. Get yourself a 2.8 special rear axle with the LSD and bigger drums, 2.8 servo and master cylinder High Spec 4 pot front callipers with 280mm discs if you’re sticking with 13 inch rims. Braided hoses also a must. All round poly bushes and lower it no more than about an inch. Some people also swear by rear axle braces
Ello mate I agree @ keeping it black. I don't know if you're with me on this but if a Capri is white they look great too so if it's white 🤍 keep it white and same goes for black . Capri club have an "anti tramping" system just wondered if it's worth Ben consulting with Capri club International on the handling side of things?
I am so envious. I had a Capri in the 90's should never have got rid as I have regretted doing so ever since. Am loving this series as i do all the other videos
I'm saving for another I'm only 4 grand saved ...gonna need 10 at least but not spending any more than 7 or 8 and only looking at 1.6 or 2.0 with an MOT... I'm sick that I spent so little buying several back in the day . My Capri is for LIFE this time around .. LESSON LEARNED.
@@T010180Expensive here too I'm sooooo kicking myself for not storing one away ...lack of support back in the day is partially why I had to sell /lose my Capri
You could create the Capri that was never made and turn it into a Capri ST and finished in ST orange and stuff. I do love a sleeper, but think you could work your magic on this long term project and make it unique. Great video as always.
but proper Capris had twin choke webbers fitted, well the 3.0 litre Ghia ones did anyway. Lasers were the very basic model. Only 2 models had the two exhausts, 3 litre, later 2.8, and the Dutch 2.3 v6.
Aren’t the 2 inner headlights the main beam? One rear fog light is the legal minimum but 2 is better, especially as most of the times the manufactures only fitted a bulb on one side to save money, so you might just need to fit a 21w bulb. Safety is irrelevant if you can save 50p a car. Bit like new cars, no spare wheel but a can of rubbish that needs a pump to blow in the tyre. Only problem with that theory is with a hybrid that always start in electric mode, the ignition turns off after 30 seconds unless you are in drive. On your own impossible to use the “puncture kit”! Only took RAC 4 hours to turn up!
Take the windscreen out and before you fit the new one it makes life easier for the body repair on the scuttle. I’d keep it in a Ford Laser oricolour but do the rear disc conversion and brake hoses so, the performance stuff. Makes the sleeper so much better until you press the go pedal and, Capris never had decent brakes ever. My 3 litre was rubbish on brakes, all you noticed was the bonnet dipping long before you felt any braking.
@@stevenmoran4060"proper Capri's" oh so 4 pots are not proper then? Had a load of v6's back in the day and never liked that snob statement. Most sold were 1600's but did those owners not love their cars? All Capri's are dead cool.
Metallic black/purple. Thy look amazing. Reflections really catch the light. A muted black that turns to shine in the light. The patterns change in different light conditions. Love your down to earth, relaxed style. Keep up the content
Love the Capri, especially this version of the Laser! It just looks so meaty and ready to attack, its just such an iconic british car. Great job in restoring this beauty, keep up the work :)
Thanks Ben, great format, graft with humour- love it! I’m no mechanic but appreciate what you’re doing. Best of luck with that Capri, it’ll be awesome when it’s done!
Hi from Australia. Can i suggest that you zoom in to some of the stuff you're doing? Maybe when you're editing? Im watching on a 55 inch tv and cant see what you're up to. Ive watched a lot of your videos and love them . Keep it up. 😁👍
Loving this episode and the Matt Armstrong reference! A collaboration between the two of you would be such a head on collision in terms of ethos and approach… and car choices! 😊
Some great suggestions already for the colour, I'd stay with Black, detailed stock as a Laser with the twist being the engine. Love the Capri had a 2 litre Ghia as a 19 year old. Absolute class it was. Enjoying this series.
I think the Capri looks really good in black. My suggestion would be Ford Panther Black - will give it a nice sparkle in the sun. As Ford the rear brakes (see what I did there 😆), given the likely performance, and the fact you won’t be able to resist a trip to the ring lol, save up a bit more dosh and go for the rear disk conversion 😊
Back in 1988 I worked in an Arther Daily style used car lot, we had our own paint shop anyway we had a capri needing a quick refresh to match the miles on the dash cough cough so we did a blow over paint job to tidy it up. The capri started off that deep metallic blue and due to a slight slip in the paint mixing room ended up more Cadbury's purple and there was some perl in it so we put the clear coat on thinking the perl would lift the blue but the next day OMG we was going to have to repaint...we sat it to fully cure and get a slot back in the paint booth, but sold it in the purple ish paint, a guy come in saw it with even the end caps off loved it !
Happy this is nearly back on the road. I would paint it in the same black as your mini so it isn't too far from standard. Looks awesome. Or yeah, just keep it standard
The Ford Mustang green would be cool as hell , the old mustangs are my favourite American car , I’d love to get myself one to restore, love watching your show , I’m glad I found you a could of months ago , watching from Scotland 🏴
Hi Ben, Just discovered your great channel a couple of weeks ago and I'm now completely absorbed in every episode of every car especially the glorious Audi TT (I have a mk1 3.2). I especially like the extended video format. Keep up the good work!
Paint it Ford Signal orange, it’ll look ace. Leave the drum brakes and spend your money on the front brakes, lots of choice out there and it will make more of a difference.. Rear suspension, single leafs, poly bushes and an axle location kit makes a big difference. Love the project so far, just got a 2.0 laser on the road after 21 years for a mate of mine!!
Great job 👍 I would say the rear brake conversion is a must. I remember how difficult it was to stop my 1.6 L in the distant past and was forever replacing or lathe cutting the front discs. God knows what it would be like with a 300-400 BHP engine 🤔🤔
Great vid as usual Ben. Keep the Capri the original standard gloss black. Don’t bother with rear discs. I’m sure you know only 30 percentage braking done on rear wheels. Four pot callipers on front for sure. Not princess conversions, too heavy and hard to notice any difference. Probably a lot of fabricating needed for coil over rear suspension. Just saying.
Great video. Had a few capris and done lots, headlight relay I was shouting at the video, did you hear me. Brings back good memories. 2x rear fog lights. Carefull with the windscreen two sizes. Sunroof and non sunroof windscreen as I found out the hard way .
Keep it looking like a standard 1.6 laser in my opinion. Can’t improve on the classic Capri look. Ultimate sleeper car. Thanks as usual for another great episode. 👍👍
Good Evening Ben. What a Superb Project to begin. I reckon all round Disc Brakes with Braided Pipes, Sports Lowered Suspension and Coil Over Springs, All rust holes and areas cut out and replaced with new metal plating, replace all Lights all around, replace the Windscreen, set of new Tyres and old style Pepper Pot Hole Rims, brand new Exhaust System Double Pipes at the rear, brand new Bonnet, Complete refurbishment of the Interior and Dash Board with new Dials and Gauges. Sports Rally Steel Steering Wheel. Gate Shift Titainium Gearbox 5/6 Speed Manual, Seating could be re-upholstered in the Original Style and Design. As for the new Bodywork Respray and her Unique colour Ben, i thought a Lovely Ocean Blue Metalic two tone with a Silver Metalic half and half. To Finish off her Beautiful look, some Gold Decals on the rear of her. How does that sound to You Ben????
Had one years ago, Daytona Yellow V6 straight piped sounded like an F1 car loved that car.😛 Should have asked the machine shop to be your sponsor for the build of the engine for the channel, (just a thought)👍🏻
Personally, I'd leave it looking a standard black Laser, lower it a tad and upgrade the brakes as we all know they aren't known for their great brakes. A 2.8 lsd, make it a proper sleeper. I've got an st170 Focus remapped, and it goes really well, yours should fly
Yeah they were originally steel but you can buy plastic ones now which are more durable. The originals rot out and that’s why almost all Capri wings rot at the top corner.
Great video as always.I would leave it standard Black so its like a sleeper look. Also what about later Sierras? Don,t they have discs on the rear? Maybe even a whole axle with suspension mod.It would be so cool if it could all fit with minimal mods.
I have a set of retro spotlights that would look awesome on that Capri. Coincidentally, they came off of my Capri. My Capri was a blue colour that was reasonably close to the Cadbury colour. As I was working as a screen printer at the time, I made Capri stickers in the Cadbury font. Looked awesome.
Starting to take shape Ben. Maybe wrapping it as a semi track style paintwork, or just a flat black and many stickers? Whatever you decide, it's gonna be right 👍👍👍
I did this with the other side of mine. Had to take the door off and dismantle half the dash, so I've been here before. To be fair, X Pressed Panels are one of the better manufacturers. Ford formed their panels rather than forging them so theres always going to be a bit of fettling to get the best fit, as you said in previous videos, taking the time to get it right pays dividends. Of course, if youre going to putva better engine in it, make sure you uprate the brakes and maybe lower the suspension too. Caprisport of Didcot, run by Neil Crane Shepherd is definitely worth speaking to. Original mirrors are like hens teeth but you can get them. Even if I did have to make up one good one out of two.....less good ones.
Love and enjoyed watching this build mate. I think as you have time and a place for it to keep it standed but upgraded oem+. Bit at a time mate its going to be your pride and joy for years to come. All the best 👍 🫡
Ben I've done many engine swaps and upgrades do the disc conversion and uprate the suspension mate you'll be glad you did sticking an ST170 even standard without these basic upgrade will see you in a lot of trouble when giving it a boot full 😊
Top tip told to me by a mad old man who rebuilt classics. Half a bottle of baby oil inside each side of the bottom of the doors. I’ve always followed that, and I’ve got to say, he was spot on. But still mental.
Great channel Ben...seeing this capri brought back memories of the first time doing over 150 mph, was this model capri with a cammed 351 Cleveland V8 on a rod run put on by the local hotrod club my older brother was a member of...i ended up swapping it for a big block chev powered T bucket which was originally powered by a granada V6 from a capri. Keep up the awesome work.
Right then! Your list... Rear disc conversion, not really necessary, slightly cheaper to upgrade the fronts to wildwood m16 powerlite 4 pots, using 2.8i vented discs. Braided hoses, yep Suspension, single leaf 2.8i springs, with an axle location kit, Coilovers eventually, or 1" lowering springs for now. Weld the rear diff! Fuel tank, 2.8i tank or use standard tank with pumps and swirl pot. Engine swap, definitely! Paint, gloss black, with a subtle tasty classics livery...Google 'brutt 33 capri'! 😋
My brother owned a mark 3 on a 79 T reg it was painted in Ford Midnight blue, and from a distance, it looked black ..so many people commented on the colour especially when they were fooled up close noticing that it was blue not black ..fantastic motor really nice colour too...
Defo do a disc conversion very cool project, I've seen one before that has had coilovers all around, the mustang built green would be a cool look for it
I think your capri with the upgrade engine would look good in the ford racing colours white and blue like the touring and rally cars had. Stainless steel exhaust system and the brakes upgraded. Great video, not bad fail on the MOT considering the cars been off of the road for years. Keep up the great videos Ben 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Ben, i love the idea of the Focus ST orange color, great compliment to your blue ST, classic style with modern paint color and turbo engine, make it a standout as you say plenty others doing a standard restore would love to see yours unique!
I like it as it is. Fix the MOT things and keep it as it left the factory with a new paint job. Would be awesome if you can find the laser stickers. And with that standard engine the rear axle with new hardware for the drums will do the job just fine ;) Cool project!!
Hi Ben love the Capri my mates brother go in the early 80,s had a mint 1.6 laser in sky blue he had a alfa sud which was so nice, love the focus I had a w reg 1.6. 16v auto it went like a rocket someone had put the 16v in it just needed touch body not a lot and bits mechanical if I was a sub to you go in 2021 of given it you I scrapped it. Can't wait for focus on track be mega great channel Friday's called Ben days never change when the Capri is done wow hey I'd Def put rear discs on black not sure was the 2.8 injection a green when you said in the interview great show some great cars coming up you said 37 I felt old I been driving for 38 years on man years flying by lol .
Great episode and update, Ben, as ever ! Scope creep - if the ST engine comes back as ‘good’, as well as your blackboard of ‘things to do’, you’re probably going to have to put some wider rubber on, so brakes, LSD, suspension are going to have to be ‘yes’ rather than ‘consider’. Paint - if the wider rubber goes on, that’s going to change the profile and stance of the car, so keeping her original black might result in ‘too sleeper’ if you get what I mean? Based on ‘if you can’t hide it, decorate it’ principle, and thinking back through the last couple of videos, you’ve already done the beautiful green on the Spitfire, so, maybe a bit ‘copy-and-paste’, but, and just throwing it out there, why don’t you do her a lovely pinging metallic Silver, try and find/create some L&B (Lambert & Butler) decals, making her a ‘one-of-one’, and saving you a ton of money on the need to find an accompanying branded race-day umbrella, as you already have one ! 😂 Keep ‘em comin’! Best, JCHK
Oh Jesus Christ... Lambert and Butler livery... That's the best idea I've heard all day... I've pinned your comment. Anyone out there got the skills to design it for me? I can paint it silver? Maybe a splitter and arch kit to give it that classic touring car look
