Toward the end of Severino's outing, there was windy, swirling drizzle and I thought it was going to start raining more but luckily the game continued. I was at the game and my friend got a free T-shirt shot from one of those people in the air.

In 2018, a 24 year old Severino had just come off his first full season. 31 starts. An impressive 2.98 ERA, with 230 Ks in 193 innings. But after a July 1st start, his 18th start of 2018, he was 13-2, with a stellar 1.98. He wasn't just an ace. He was one of the top 5 pitchers in the game. He was showing signs of building a Hall of Fame career. I remember watching a game around this time with ARod in the booth. He said during the broadcast that Seve had the best fastball AND slider in the game. While this was nonsense, it did hint towards Severino's greatness and potential. In his final 14 starts of 2018 however, he was 6-6 with a wretched 5.67 ERA. I don't remember what was being said about him then, but he hasn't been close to a good pitcher since that first half of 2018. But make no mistake. Luis Severino wasn't a good pitcher, he was a great pitcher. It has been a sad and puzzling story. But i think his story is far from over.

It’s a small sample, but Nimmo’s expected stats are crazy. xBA over .300, xSLG near .600, xwOBA around .450-in other words, he’s absolutely crushing the ball. And while his actual stats probably won’t end up that gaudy, it does align with the trend we’ve seen the past couple of years, as he’s been hitting the ball harder and harder. It wouldn’t shock me if he hit 30 dingers this year, because he’s also raised his launch angle. And he’s doing it while _improving_ his contact rates. Brandon might be the best all-around hitter on the team.

@@ericB3444 Dude, are you OK? I said Nimmo is good, I didn’t say the team was good. They’re just on a little bit of a heater. The starting pitching, especially, will regress. I predicted they’d win ~75 games this year, and I don’t see any reason to alter that prediction. I lean pessimistic too, but at least my pessimism is rational. You just sound like a raving lunatic.

@@ericB3444 I apologize for that remark; it was uncalled for. And I certainly agree with you on the first part (and btw, it’s hard not to be deathly worried about a comeback by said former guy). As for the Mets, I don’t think they’re an outright bad team-that’s reserved for teams like the Rockies, White Sox, and A’s-but they’re obviously not a good team, either. They’re just mediocre. Nimmo is NOT mediocre, but my guess is that, if they’d known how 2023 would go, they wouldn’t have re-signed him-or Díaz, for that matter. It feels like they went all in, panicked when things went sideways, realized they were in an awkward situation, and are now trying to “thread the needle”-a strategy that rarely works unless you have a really strong farm system with a bunch of MLB-ready guys. I predicted the 2023 team would fail, for exactly the reasons they DID fail, and I have long-term concerns about this team, because the core is getting old (and they’re potentially wasting a year of their primes), and they have very little strong, near-ready pitching in-house (it’s basically just Christian Scott for the rotation, and Nate Lavender for the bullpen). So the mismatch of timelines might mean that the team won’t be good for a while. Having said that, I’ve lived through a lot of lean periods with this team, and that’s part of being a fan. Nowadays, I give them 2-3 months to see if there’s anything there, and when there isn’t (2021 and 2023, for example), say around June or so, I just stop paying attention so much, and kinda move on with my life until the offseason. I fully expect to do that again this year, because my expectations are low, but I’m open to being surprised, like in 2022, when it became clear pretty quickly that they were actually good. I think it’s a healthier approach. Let me ask this question: what do you wish they had done? It’s an honest question. I’m not sure I have a good answer myself, because I knew Ohtani wouldn’t come to the Mets (plus he’s nearly 30), and I didn’t think the free agent market was that strong otherwise, especially on the pitching side.

Listening to this guy talk about an irrelevant team is worthless. Do not watch these Mets. Trade bader for soho and judge. Then it’s still not enough. We need almost everybody replaced.
