The Brass Monkey rally surely has to be the highlight of the motorcycling calendar for many riders in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Maybe the Burt Munro challenge is an equal first.
Join the Woodend Wanderer to get a small flavour of the auspicious occasion and maybe you will do it yourself one day. That is the new reincarnation which must surely come.
Since posting the video, Bob Tanner has let me know that the State Highway 85 road known as the Pig Root (not route) is so called because there is a Pig Root Creek roughly halfway along. Thanks Bob for the explanation.

Nah. Quite mild actually. Nothing compared to your trips in Dubai though.

Thanks Gareth. Taking a little break as shifting house from New Zealand to the Uk and the bike is in a container somewhere. Thanks for your note. Really appreciated.

Hi John. Thanks for the comment. The problem I has was that years ago I did the Brass monkey on a Harley and in a convoy of around 30 other Harleys. In Palmerston one of the group said we should rename it the Hogs Root after all the Marley's and that was it. The brain worm stuck and the Hogs Route was born. It was a fantastic weekend as you say and I really hope there is another Brass Monkey somewhere. It is just too good for it to die out.

Hi WW i had a conversation with one of the guys who was running the rally, he sort of said that "they were looking at another brass monkey rally with a different form to cater different ages in riders n and different styles of bikes,3 events at the same time. 1 lot for the enduro riders that want to do high country stuff,2nd lot that want to do GP as ride a circuit from a town to town 100 plus kms and 3rd lot

What an amazing part of the world, I gather the Harley isn’t getting much use since you brought the great Gs

Hello Jack. Nice to hear from you again. There is no doubt that New Zealand really is a beautiful place for motorcycles. The Harley has been sold. I had her for 12 years and they were fantastic. But it was time to move on and the new BMW is turning out to be all that I expected. As much as I would have liked to keep the Harley, it did not make sense to financially and practically.

@@WoodendWanderer as you I just brought myself BMW Gs1250 HP and also own a Triumph bonnieville T120 and also own Honda crf300l to go offroad, bit like you with the Harley as much as I love the Triumph, I always jump on Gs, so the Triumph might have to go, even if you can afford it, makes no sense owning 3 bikes

Nice collection of motorcycles!. As I work on a ship I spend 6 months of the year away from home. Paying insurance and road tax on bikes I dont use is not sustainable. I can spend the money I save on touring instead 😁

This looks like fun. But minus 10?! Yikes. Too bad they won’t be having it anymore.

I am sure something will come along to replace it. It raises too much money for charity to be gone forever. We shall see. As for -10, well sometimes you got to get out of the comfort zone. That and antifreeze in the form of a few beers helps 😁
