New Zealand Family Reacts to The American Revolution - OverSimplified (Part 1)!

As an American myself, I find it interesting when people from different countries learn about our history and their reactions to it.

As an American, I even laughed at the gold everywhere statement.

I've been to the famous bridge in Lexington where the "shot heard around the world" took place. There is a memorial to the British soldiers who died there, which I found very moving.

Actually Paul Revere yelled, "The Regulars are Coming!" because at the time they were all "British".

Oversimplified is a very interesting history teller. In all of his videos, it is not a serious history teacher vibe, but more of funny history teacher vibes.

I gotta return the respect and learn some NZ history.

John Adams' brilliant wife basically said that people in the future would never really understand how hard they worked and suffered to pull this Revolution off. Nadine you were right, nothing worth fighting for comes easy.

The British response was literally “The Empire Strikes Back!”

The entire revolution was based on the simple matter that the Americans - or colonists as they were known at that time - were requesting representation in the parliament that was levying taxes on them and they were denied. Hence the phrase “No Taxation Without Representation” being so prominent in the American lexicon. I enjoy your family’s videos and am looking forward to part 2. And to my fellow Americans, have a happy and safe 4th of July tomorrow.

the Original colonies were 13 in number, by the time of the war of 1812 between the US and the UK there were 15 states, the Star Spangled Banner was written at that time and there were 15 stars and 15 stripes on the flag, they soon realized that if they added a stripe every time the added a new state the flag would soon look like a scroll rather than a flag, so it was decided to only have the original 13 stripes, and just add a star when a new state was added. 😊

The amazing part is that most of these men were in their 20s and 30s at this time. We have their portraits showing them as distinguished older men, but at the time of these events they were much younger. I have an ancestor that was recognized by Washington for his heroism at the battle of White Plains NY.

Fun video. Good wishes from just outside Boston. Fun fact, John Adams the 2nd President of the U.S. was the lawyer defending the British troops of the Boston Massacre. And he was a member of the Sons of Liberty but he really believed everyone should have a fair trial.

A couple of interesting points that got left out of this video: first of all, I read an article somewhere that said many historians agree that if the Continental Army had won the battle at Quebec, the Canadian colonists would have joined the rebellion, and there would be one big country in North America, rather than two. Secondly, in the original draft of the Constitution, Jefferson did actually include points that would have outlawed slavery. However, because it needed to be unanimously agreed upon, and the southern states wouldn't vote for it if it abolished slavery, those parts were removed in the final version.

It IS over-simplified...but it does give a lot of good general information.

Oversimplified is my favorite way of learning about history, hes funny yet still insightful and knowledgeable.

My 5th Great Grandfather, Hugh Pierce, fought in our Revolution as part of the South Carolina Volunteer Militia.

I still prefer it being called Independence Day instead of the 4th. So many here have forgotten, or don't know the true meaning of it, and how precious freedom is.

In my hometown, houses have stars on them indicating the amount of minutemen who lived there

The colonist also used guerrilla fighting tactics they learned from the Indigenous tribes. Which the British thought was bad form. Wars were fought by soldiers standing in rows not by using the landscape. Hard to get a clear shot when they are behind trees and in the deep thicket.

Living in suburban NY we are steeped in revolutionary history. From the battle of Stony Point to a restaurant dating back to the time of Washington where he actually ate. With bits about Benedict Arnold, Anthony Wayne etc. When construction or road work is done people use metal detectors. On occasion where British troops were known to march or camp people find coins from that era.

After watching your family watch some of the history of USA it made me think of schoolhouse rock. Back in the 80s they used to play short videos in-between Saturday morning cartoons here to teach kids different subjects and America was one of them. Besides America, they did grammer, math, science. You should check them out.

And I will always love the way this man decides to teach history by making it entertaining and also hilarious.

“No taxation without representation!” was one of the statements made by colonists during that time which eventually lead to the idea of Independence. Definitely need to check out Oversimplified WW1 and WW2 videos next 👀

After watching you guys have a root beer float, I got some vanilla frozen yogurt and diet orange soda (I'm diabetic so I have to choose lower sugar items and already had the diet orange) and made an orange float - it tastes like a vanilla and orange ice cream we call a Creamsicle. I drive right through the Concord, Massachusetts area every day on my way to work, and seeing all of the historical sights that were so integral to the nation’s founding never fails to give me goosebumps!

Oversimplified is a great channel for learning history. If you want to learn about more major events, I recommend his videos on the Civil War, both World Wars, the Russian Revolution, the Cold War, and his most recent video on the Napoleonic Wars. The mini wars are fun too, and as New Zealanders you may be interested in the Emu Wars of Australia.

Thomas Jefferson wrote anti slavery parts to the declaration but they were taken out so that all the colonies would sign. He also freed his slaves upon his death.

Hello New Zealand family. It was enjoyable watching your reactions to the history of our great nation. You are great parents for educating your children on history outside of your native land. I was on the journey as well and although I knew in general a lot of the history, I enjoyed watching your reactions. I am a Korean- American who emigrated to the U.S. 47 years ago when I was a child at the age of 6. I am a proud naturalized citizen of America and appreciate the rich history of how America was founded. That was enjoyable to watch especially how it was humorously told with much laughter. Looking forward to seeing part 2!

There are a few thing to understand about the Boston tea party. The tea in Boston harbor was not just some boxes of loose tea but processed tea that is compressed into small bricks. The bricks are shaved into hot water to make tea. The bricks make for much more efficient transportation of the tea. The boxes on the ship and subsequently destroyed when thrown overboard constituted 46 tons equating to 18.5 million cups of tea. Literally years of tea tossed overboard.

As an American who knows this stuff it is still so cool watching your family learn these things. Great channel idea guys.

Thank you so much for your interest in our country. We've been so blessed in America and are genuinally interested in the freedoms of others. The wars fought by the US are typically described to be for oil, power, & land (which we already have) but in fact are to lend a hand to those thirsting for freedom. Civil War, WW1, WW2 , Korea, Vietnam, Iraq.... If you really stop and think about it what did the US benefit from any of them? They were fought to bring freedom to those whose backs were against the wall and could not do it for themselves. We see ourselves as the big brother by God's Providence and we take this role extremely serious. To the point of dying. It hurts to see some cheapen the death of all our fallen soldiers by saying it's all about oil. We have more oil than we'd ever use already (Texas, Alaska, Gulf of Mexico). Yeah we're loud, brash, and annoying but at the end of the day "Greater love hath no man than this. To give his life for a friend". You cannot begin to understand the mindset of Americans without starting with its Christian roots and their relationship with freedom. i.e. The Puritans. Anyway, love the channel. My wife and I have been inspired to watch some NZ vids with our kids. God bless. BTW, The greatest example of what I'm speaking of is David Eubanks. His life has been made into a documentary on Amazon Prime. Please watch. Life changing. If you can't see on Amazon there are bootlegged versions on RU-vid but don't benefit the "mission".

i literally teared up watching your interest in our history. i live in one of the 13 original states and my family was here then as well. those militias were farmers with muskets and you can see why the right to keep and bear arms is so important. oh and sorry to the rest of the world for the guy in the whitehouse right now but i can assure you that we did not elect him

Fun fact about Minnesota - the temperature ranges wildly here. The highest temp ever recorded in the state was 115F (46C) in 1917, and the lowest temp ever recorded in the state was -60F (-51C) in 1996.

The guy Patrick Henry who said, "Give me liberty or give me death is my ancestor." His first wife Sarah Shelton Henry is my ancestor on my mother's dad's side (the Shelton family line).

You and your family have shown more love and respect for the US than many living here. I hope at some point you are able to make a trip over here. That being said, everything I know about New Zealand I learned from Lord of the Rings and Anzac day. Maybe do a few videos about your own country to share with the world?

I am an American - when I went to Boston I stopped at Boston Harbor and took some tea that I brought along and sprinkled it into the water there! BTW, if you ever go to Boston, Concorde is not that far away so you can see all the original Revolutionary War sites and you can go to Walden Pond (go early in the day because it gets busy) and actually swim in the pond where Thoreau wrote his famous book. It's a great experience, and if you go in late August or in September the water is nice and warm too! You just leave your things on the shore and jump in!

Ok, I love history but I gotta say it was NEVER this fun when I was in school! I have to say though that American independence was nothing short of a miracle! Events like the fog happened over and over again and that's why we believe that the concept of the United States was God ordained.
