@bommie

There's a very healthy and robust inter-branch rivalry in the US military. We all know, Army shits on Marines, SOF shits on regular units, everyone shits on the Air Force, etc. But PJs, despite being under the Air Force branch, are the only guys who are untouchable. They command literally universal respect from every single servicemember regardless of military branch. And that's saying something.

I remember these guys from basic in Lackland. Even in their free time, they ran everywhere. They never walked and always made everyone else feel like ordinary mortals. They are the guys that pull a 180 lbs pilot out of his crashed plane, strap him on their backs and run 50 miles back to friendly lines. Maybe that is an exaggeration, but maybe not. God bless all of our special forces and every other person who serves or has served. It really is a team effort, but the team does have super stars.

I had the distinct pleasure of being a part of the PJ pipeline as an Aircraft Maintainer in the 920th Rescue Squadron, Patrick AFB, FL. The PJ pipeline goes through that base and I got the chance to see their day to day training up close. These guys are some of the most committed, focused, and overall badass Airmen who can do it all. You should what the Discovery series called "Making The Cut" where it goes through the training pipeline for all Special Forces groups including the PJ's. Jump training is intense, especially jumps over the oven with the boat (Zodiac). Salute to the guys with the JOLLY GREEN FEET and the Archangel on their back! - SSgt. Walker

PJ's are trained to do anything because they are able to be sent with any Special Forces team at anytime to go anywhere. Even if they aren't on the initial insert team, they are usually on the QRF. What makes them so unique isn't just the training but the willingness to go regardless of the circumstance. I washed out of the program. An instructor had to stop me because I wouldn't say "I Quit". I was tearing my body apart. He told me I had the right attitude, I just needed to train a little harder and I would be ready. I wasn't able to go back. My shoulder gave up and now I'm an old fat man with a very temperamental shoulder when it rains. I don't regret it. I only regret not finishing.

When I was in the USAF, I got to briefly work with some of our special forces. The PJs were a different breed. I was never the flag waving type, but one PJ asked me, "What does it say about a nation that's soldiers with the longest, most extensive and expensive training are tasked with saving lives?" That always stuck with me.

Ex Air Force here, tried out for the PJ's but not tough enough to swim a mile in 41 degree water right after all the other physical tests.. I did not know I was going to try out before going to basic training. Its okay, I did not make the Air Force Band after trying out either. No one in my group of about 40 that day was accepted into Pararescue, just proud I was in the last two. Air Force not known for bad asses but these guys are that and much more. They are not fighters like SEALs, not even close, but they survive all conditions and rescue Pilots, SEALS, Rangers and civilians whenever they get in trouble anywhere. Every one is trained to near ER or surgical nurse level and has dealt with things regular nurses never will see. Only one out of three came home from Vietnam. Not one I met ever bragged about their capabilities, very humble. I helped them as much as I could on the Flight Line.

Pararescue operators (officer and enlisted) are assigned to two types of unit once their training is done: Guardian Angel (most of what you saw) squadrons provide Combat Search and Rescue, abroad and at home. They primarily use helicopters (HH-60G Pave Hawk). They’re on call 24/7. The other PJs are attached to the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, alongside other special operations airmen. Those guys get attached to individual special operation teams during missions. Almost all special operations missions have PJs on the team or standing by. That MSgt Chapman Medal of Honor video had a PJ in it. When the rescue helo arrived, a Senior Airman Jason Cunningham was in it. He was one of the guys initially wounded coming out of the helicopter, but he kept saving others until he died. He received the Air Force Cross for his actions. He is being reconsidered for a Medal of Honor. taskandpurpose.com/.amp/unsung-heroes/unsung-heroes-airman-saved-10-men-burning-chinook

It does get covered much, but PJs and Combat Controllers may be the most versatile SF Operators in the US military. They can be classed as Teir 2 or Teir 1 Operators and run with all branches to include Army Rangers and Delta, Navy Seal Teams and Devgru (team 6), Marine Force Recon and Raiders. And handle almost all environments: desert, mountains, ice and snow, water, jungle, etc.

That flag that Jessica Lynch had clutched in her hand was given to her by that PJ that was checking her out. He ripped it off his pocket and told her to hang onto it. PJs are a breed above the rest. William Pittsenbarger was a PJ in Vietnam and was only deployed to pick up wounded soldiers. He refused to leave the battle zone and was killed by NVA soldiers as he defended to the wounded. In Somalia, Scott Fales and Tim Wilkinson set up a casualty collection point in the alleyway where the first Blackhawk helicopter had crashed and treated wounded Rangers throughout the entire battle. Fales was shot in his butt and continued to fight after Wilkinson patched him up. In Afghanistan, Jason Cunningham was mortally wounded on Takur Gahr while the team of Rangers he was with defended their crashed helicopter. They tried to get him medivac'd but because two helicopters had already been shot down, the men he was with were forced to wait for darkness before they could be rescued. He died shortly before they were rescued. Pitts and Cunningham were both in their 20s when they were killed.

The military does make fun of each other but it’s like a sibling rivalry, there’s little to no bad blood between us, but whenever Spec ops gets brought up in the conversation, there’s a somber feeling about it. When para’s get brought up, there’s nothing but respect when we talk about them, you ask any one of us a question about who we want beside us when the sh*t hits the fan, we all point towards them because they’re Doc and they’re family and they’ll fight to the end just to get to you and save you or bring you back home. USAF PJs are all tough as hell. I've met a handful, and they were awesome to talk to. Everyone loves to talk about the Rangers and SEALS, but PJs are definitely in the same league of Special Forces. My hat is off to every PJ out there. I certainly can't do what they do (with ease, no less). Fun side note, I gave a briefing to a PJ team once in a deployed location, and the team lead gave me a PJ poker chip as a way of saying thanks for the briefing, since I was a young airman and I volunteered to give said briefing and answer all of their questions. I have a display case for all of my AF challenge coins that I've gotten over the years, and that poker chip is right out in front.

Yes and depends, could be longer. After finishing their pipeline they have to continue for about 1 more year of constant medical training in hospitals, ERs, ambulances etc. After that if they are assigned to a special tactics squadron then they will have to attend the special tactics advanced skill training which is about 12 months long I think. Those assigned to a combat rescue squadron will probably attend those rescue diving and other relevant course.

I love the videos that you check out and I have a suggestion ! I noticed that you are fascinated with aircraft carriers. as someone who worked the flight deck as a yellow shirt I think you should look at a video on youtube called " Trial by Fire a Carrier Fights for life" it is actually a film produced by the U.S. Navy. It is used at the Aviation Fire Fighting School which all flight deck personnel must attend. I do warn that there are parts that are a bit graphic. but I can tell you that all the FUN at the school stops when they see this film and things get very serious very quickly. It shows the dangers inherent on a carrier. and how quickly things can go very very wrong very quickly !!!!!!

Our training is 2 years of pure intensity, followed by constant action and training. I won't say we're better, overall, than other SOCOM groups, just different. We're the absolute best at what we do. They're the absolute best at what they do. While we do have endurance training, like the SEALS, Recon, Rangers, et al, our primary training involves speed and extreme intensity - get in, get it done, and get out. The people we're there for don't have the luxury of time, so we're always on the clock. When our brothers and sisters have given all they have to give, we're there to pick them up, patch them up, and carry them home.

I just want send you a wholehearted and sincere "Thank You!". You have shown more Patriotism and admiration towards the United States Military than a disgusting number of younger Americans have in the past several years. You are a beautiful person both inside and out, and the awe you show during your reaction videos is genuine. It's no secret that many nations despise America as well as it's military, it's refreshing to know that the citizens of our best allies are still behind us. P.S. Check out a movie with Kevin Costner, The Guardian, I believe it's about the Coast Guard but they do the same tasks shown in the above video.

Courtney! Great videos, I have been watching them. Just to let you know, Coast Guard mission is under the Department of Homeland Security and not the Department of Defense, so their missions are in U.S. territory, unsless they are deployed. In that case, they will be under the U.S. Navy.

Courtney, proud American here and I love your videos! This one was great! If you want to see U.S. Military power, you should do a video on either the B-52 Bomber, or a U.S. Super Carrier. A lot of videos on both of them, and I think you will be amazed! U.S.A.

The training pipeline is 2 years long. Also the PJ's out of Pope AFB were trained to rescue space shuttle astronauts if the shuttle went down in the water off of Florida.

I was just talking to a US Air Force Recruiter, recently, and he said he was getting College Grad jocks who were adrenaline junkies that were willing to join the USAF as Airman Basics, not officers, just so they could do Para Rescue, JTACs, etc,. Amazing young men! Kevin- Vet USAF

They have to do it all because what they are training to do is to go in after their patience where somebody is actively trying to kill him most of the time so they're not only have to save their life they have to fight to get you out of there in one piece so they're trained well

My nephew Jason Garcia was seen in that video loading Jessica onto the evac aircraft. I had already retired as a Combat Medic by that time, or I may have been at his side in that mission. I did 25-years... and, yes, would do it all again - only better.
