The 482 K-36 and the 4005 Big Boy sound almost like the real things, very powerful sounding! The 482 starting the train, barking and slipping was epic!!

A wonderful look at other train clubs. I'm amazed at the triple guage tracks (the switches must be really complex!). And seeing that Big Boy was a real pleasure. I'm also surprised at how young most of the engineers appear to be.

Wow, Big Boy right down to the whistle sound. Truly a wonderful job done on that. I appreciate the smaller engines as well.

What I love about the modeled K-36 loco is that the stack talk and whistle sound exactly the same pitch wise and all as the real K-36 its modeled after

@Nick-xm1ux My Dad built that locomotive, Ted Carter of Rotorua. He died in 2003. He was a Master Locomotive Engineer and I watched K-36 getting built, from the blueprints up! I remember him being so meticulous about every part of her construction. He built her from a photocopy of a photocopy of some plans that no longer existed, that he somehow obtained from NZ Rail. He was especially careful about the whistle sound, he wanted to get it just right, and it would gladden his heart that you noticed it! I remember him blowing on the whistle to test it, then giving it to me to blow! He was absolutely meticulous in her construction, everything was done the "Old Way" with precision to 1/1000th of an inch or less! He even constructed the hand-bent walnut arches on the cabin, which were bent using steam in a steel-pipe mould, as were the originals when the big ones were built. This was very difficult and there may have been a few failures (I can't remember, actually) but he eventually got it right and the end result is the beautiful machine you see here, whose whistle and engine noises sound "just like the big ones"!

The one issue about the hobby in New Zealand is that we are experiencing a shortage of engaged enthusiasts within the hobby, a lot of them are above the retirement age so we have uneven amounts of people in clubs. For many, they need more volunteers that are young to keep the hobby alive.

Rides may cost 2 dollars? What monetary standard are you on Also, if Australians are called Aussies (Ozzies), what are New Zealanders affectionately known as? And, what is Anzac?
@samlauder378
@samlauder378 4 года назад
That would be the New Zealand Dollar which, 1 NZD being equal to 0.67 USD at the time of posting this comment. New Zealanders are known as Kiwi's or enzedders. ANZAC originally stood for the Australian New Zealand Army Corps, who were the main British Empire force of soldiers from the Dominions and Colonies from Oceania during the first half of WW1, but is now used as a way to exemplify the bond between kiwis and aussies.

linda frank I agree wholeheartedly on the price. Nineteen years ago Atlanta’s train fares went up to $1.50 if you didn’t have a monthly pass. I was attending machining school across town and had a monthly pass. Well the politicians started t complaining that the fare increase would hurt the poor people. I had to write a letter to the editor of the Atlanta Journal Constitution pointing out that most - if not all - “poor people” had monthly passes and never saw an increase at all.
