Ben Clarke was such an underrated player.

This was probably the first major test with the new laws that were introduced in 1993, which, in my opinion, started the downslide of rugby into the game it is today, with its phony rucks and multiple phases. As Frank Keating said at the time, why tinker with the laws after a successful Rugby World Cup in 1991? The catchphrase word at the time was "continuity." Well, that morphed into guaranteed possession in many ways.

rugby in the professional era is a much improved game thanks. Games from this era did not havr anywhere near the same continuity . professionalism improved the skill level and physicality 100%

@@MrAhuapai I could not disagree more. The game has become boring, not that there weren't boring games back then. There's multiple phases, little in the way of contesting rucks, mauls have become legalized obstruction wedges similar to American football between the 1890s until the flying wedge was banned in 1906 (when rugby replaced American football in California until 1918 for that matter). Back then the aim was classic rugby, forwards getting possession and getting the ball to the backs.

The last Lions tour of the amateur era (though by 1993, most players would have been paid under the table).

That boot money was not all that much, not enough to live on, so most players had to have a job. There's an interview of Carling and Guscott on YT and they say that they didn't want to be paid to play, but would have liked to have been able to endorse products and get sponsorships as a way to supplement their work pay. Guscott got a job with British Gas, and he admits he worked about half a week and then had time to train. That's the way American sports amateurism existed pre-1992 Olympics. It was semi-professionalism.

1993 was the last Lions team to play in the amateur era. The ABs were well beaten n the 2nd test but turned it around in the 3rd test. A dubious penalty to the ABs in the 1st test in the last min when the Lions were ahead 18-17 could well have meant a series win for the Lions but it wasn't to be.

By then the referees weren't New Zealanders, who, except for Pring in 1971, were not honest brokers.

@@ldfreitas9437 Going on memory I think it was an Aussie ref who awarded that last min penalty against the Lions in the Ist test. btw Sid Going was very critical of John Prings refereeing in the 1971 test series.

The All Blacks teams of 92-93 were some of the least impressive of the 90's. A bit of a rebuilding time as the great team of the late 80's was broken up. The great mid 90's team that played the 95 RWC final and won the 96 series against the 'boks came out of this mediocre period.

This was the test match in which the NZRFU made sure that the Lion’s supporters were dispersed around the stadium to try and minimise the support that they could give their team.

The All Blacks were 30 points better than the Lions...not just 17, biased British commentary as usual, French Ref dodgy, AB's were at a very low ebb, Lions took advantage 2nd test at Wellington. I do agree that ben Clarke was a class player.

@xpat73
@xpat73 3 года назад
@@oliprj8676 McGeechan was in charge. It's well known that far too many useless Scots were picked who went off tour and spend the whole tour drinking. The mid week team was an embarrassment - it's well documented that Burnell, Milne, Cronin, and Peter "Teapot" Wright were useless and went off tour. Hell, Leonard had to play out of position at tight head in the second and third tests because Burnell was so useless. Three Scots were dropped after the 1st test, and rightly so. Which Scots should have been test starters? The only one that deserved it was Hastings and he was far off his 1989 form and was carrying an injury. Scott Hastings played well but he broke his cheekbone v Otago had had to go home. Ben Clarke was player of the tour, there was nobody better than Richards and Winterbottom. Bayfield and Johnson played well. Leonard played out of position and still played well. Brian Moore forced his way in. I'm not sure who you think should have toured from Scotland and didn't;t get picked? Or who should have been in the tests that didn't;t get picked? Gary Armstrong would have gone but he refused to tour.
