O the modern game, this pre-professional match, was a treat to the eye and a fitting reminder how the game is to be played

Fluid game, proper jerseys, Bill McClaren... This is the rugby I still love most after 30 years.

No Lineout jumping, no yellow cards, bugger all scrum re-sets, no floodlights, no swan dives at try time, no kicking teas, plain coloured jerseys, no pretty boys, no 130 kg islanders, no time wasting... sheesh - it's like another more wonderful world... I was going to say "no dirty thugs" but Richard Loe is playing, so cancel that!

Matt Pelski Rubbish. These players were all amateurs who had day jobs. Teague was a builder and I know Guscott was a brick layer when he toured with the Lions in 1989. The vast majority of the Welsh team are working class lads. The idea that it was an upper class game then is pure nonsense. Most of the players on this pitch are ordinary people with ordinary jobs.....

No testosterone and growth hormone etc etc which is also rampant at amateur level

What's more, in the few scrum resets there were, the scrum was reformed and the ball put back in in less than 10secs !

Yes those kicking tees have ruined the game alright. Oh, and there was time wasting. Lots of it.
@supersquats

I agree 10 seconds for a scrum whereas nowadays it’s like 45-90 seconds, time wasting at line outs, excessive subs, tmos the games dull now. I’d love to see any of the current players kick goals in the conditions these guys did, did you see the length of the grass! Nowadays it’s like 1” high

Lafond and Campo what legends. And Guscott.

This commentary by oor Bill is what made him a true legendary man...he made his mark for others to follow but his idiosyncratic comments...Wha's like Oor Wullie McClaren and comments like Doddie weir...he's like a mad giraffe or he's like a bull in a china shop...God do I miss him dearly and this is my reminiscing on rugby was played better then than now...today whit a load cobblers... And I don't watch it now because world rugbys agenda and the farcical RWC 2019 Japan were magnificent hosts but the tournament being held in typhoon season and referees have been overburdened with IRU discombobulating them they dont know there arse from there elbow.....I enjoy watching this immensely.....I'm in rugby heaven.

I miss the days when the BaaBaa were a composite side of the best of the UK and France playing in the British Isles. As the Lions never play at home it was fantastic to see the best NH side in action Nowadays there are guys playing for the Baabaas who havent even played a test for their own nation. what about a 4 nation championship involving a best of the UK and France vs Australia and Argentina vs SA vs NZ . Love to see that.

To my knowledge Barbarians always traditionally picked 1 uncapped player.

One of the big changes since the players went pro,is that the forwards are much fitter/faster and this creates less space for the backs to run into.

Still think one of the reason scrums collapse is the tightness of the shirts leading to less to grab hold of

How much different would English rugby would have been if they opted for Barnes at flyhalf instead of a kicking 10.

Tip to video editor: how about replaying Thorburn's try rather than every moment of his conversion. More interesting.

18.06 Mistaken commentator. The crowd wasn't booing Stanley for passing forward to Charvet, they were booing the ref because it wasn't forward.

I'm guessing the Welsh coach at the time was Ron Waldron seeing as there were 16 Neath players in the starting 15.

@isitwasit8756
@isitwasit8756 5 лет назад
It was the start of the shit years for Wales and for good reason to.. during the 90's rugby league in the north hoovered up a massive amount of Welsh talent and the Welsh national rugby union team suffered greatly as a consequence

@A-small-amount-of-peas 5 лет назад
I call it the post Jonathan Davies years. Without him we looked lost and then as mentioned the gutting of our team to rugby league. Still there was that solitary championship in 94 to sustain us a little bit through that time until Henry took over

What Madness Wales in the utter Doldrums here , and playing with regrettable there 4th Team because of the massive mass Welsh Exodus north to rugby league from 1st , 2nd and 3rd Welsh team players , leaving Welsh Club rugby in Wales for Northern Rugby League . The best of Welsh talent and the very best of the Welsh player pool coming through left , after a huge Row with the WRU over modernising the game in Wales which was much needed , although the WRU couldn’t see further than there own nose at the time .

Dear Xpat73...I wish to respect your opinion.However, you only claim a better product rather than note what about it is better according to you. I'm a Yank who played two years in Yorkshire during the 70's. I fear that rugby is becoming too much like American football, to include subs and some performance enhancing drugs...and bashing the ball through the defense rather than tossing the ball about the field are too my eye not as enjoyable.
@arserobinson7118

did Wales win any games that year, lol we were awful in 1990
@xpat73

Sorry. But the product put out now is far superior.
@xpat73
@xpat73 9 лет назад
I am not sure what any of the above questions have to do with my opinion that the product is better now. I have been watching international rugby for 35 years. How long have you been watching it for? As English does not appear to be your first language, perhaps you didn't understand my posting.
@plofkraak6536

xpat73 Because of your judgemental nature, I already expected that you are very experienced. Maybe you can also say something about the developments in shirts, shorts and shoes. And how those changes effects.
@xpat73
@xpat73 9 лет назад
One reason the game is better is obvious: There are far more top levels teams performing consistently well: Wales, Ireland and Argentina. Even the teams like Samoa and Fiji, who used to do well at 7s, but just be a novelty act at 15s, are now competitive at 15s, and even beat some of the big boys once in a while. The ball is in play far longer, and the skill levels are far higher. Professionalism has been very good for the game since 1995.

+xpat73 it's i guess an age thing and the game you played, I much prefer this than to the percentage kick everything, sod that run at them, if they are on the wrong side ruck em out the way, ffs these guys had skill and athleticism, not a bunch of gym bunnies, hey if that's what you want to watch fair play this is pure rugby
