This movie explores Newberry National Volcanic Monument while explaining the volcanic history and science of this area. There is a lot to cover at Newberry which is why you don't see videos covering the whole thing. I attempted to do this while making it educational and easy to understand.

I was feeling nostalgia for Central Oregon and stumbled on this gem of a movie. Covered a lot of old facts that I hadn't heard in forever and learned a lot more. Truly makes me want to go back.

Thank you so much! This project was my baby or a year or two. Capturing everything on the list was so important. The research was also a big thing to take on. I wanted everything just right so hopefully this stands as a good movie of Newberry for a long time. Thanks again, a comment like that makes me feel good about the work and final product.

Sharon thank you so much for the comments. It will take me a bit to catch up. I am glad you started on my favorite video here. This was the most personally rewarding to me, even though my channel suffered a bit by spending a year on one video. I am glad to see your comments acknowledging the common themes across my videos like safety and appreciation of nature. I don't say it but a common theme for me is the healing we get from nature, maybe I should make a video about that. Anyways thank you for all the comments that remind me these videos continue to provide value to people. Sharing is the best way to help me to if you have anyone that might be interested please send them this way.

My family's lived in Bend since the early seventies and it's very rare to hear Paulina pronounced correctly. Thanks Jim! Interesting I have heard a couple people say I said it wrong. Looks like the way I did it comes from European pronunciation. Filming is super fun, glad you are doing it. Some advice from across the Atlantic: when visiting the Lava Cast Forest in winter, make sure to know how to reach Casey Ladelle, aka Cascade Heavy Rescue. He’s the guardian angel who comes to recover your vehicle in case the Lava Cast determines you’ll go no further, nor back.

This was a great video; I found it to be very informative and it kept my interest throughout. Is there enough to see and do that a person could spend a week exploring the Monument and the Bend area in general?
@MattCookOregon

Thank you. I think Newberry could be a nice week. Sightseeing could easily be a few days. Then you could do some hikes, boating, horses, atv, etc. Include area between Newberry and Bend and you got more caves than anyone could ask for.

Thank you. I appreciate this question. I try to be responsible with drones. Many do not. In this case I asked the park service by email so I had written permission. National parks are usually strictly enforced, national monuments not so much. I don't agree with regulations that allow motor boats and cars but not drones, those are so much more destructive, but oh well I follow the rules!

@gerrycoleman7290
@gerrycoleman7290 10 месяцев назад
@@MattCookOregon No. I think it is the real deal. A possible site of an old supervolcano. It also looks like it is within a much larger even older supervolcano. Smith Rock to the north has been determined to be one of the edges of an old supervolcano. Where there is one confirmed there are likely more. Now it is time to do on the ground investigation. I know there are plenty of rhyolites on those areas. Wouldn't it be most exciting if they are chemically tied to the Yellowstone hot spot?

@@MattCookOregon I heard that part, but I got the impression that you thought volcanic activity was off in the future. I just wanted you to know there has been a huge uptick in activity right now.
