grew up in Newburgh. Class of 84. As someone who still has family there ( I left in 90) I miss Newburgh very much. Yeah it might have gotten run down, Lack of jobs, mismanagement of funds etc,, but I count the days till when I can return. From the outside looking in it's unsafe, but so is the rest of the world. My truest friends in the world live there, my cousins, aunts and uncles. I will always be proud to say I'm from the "Burgh" and am overjoyed when I can go back and kick it with my people. I might not live there anymore, but I visit as much as I can. LONG LIVE MY CITY.
Its a little strip of restaurants along the river and thats about it. One of the main reasons its not being successfully gentrified is there is no commuter rail line from NYC to Newburgh. Look at Beacon right across the river. It was very similar to Newburgh at one time but has been completely gentrified due to it have a metro north stop with direct trains to grand central.
@@rjak292 I didn’t even think about the train lol you’re right. Beacon’s train is right there. It looks you have to take a 30 min ferry ride from Newburgh to Beacon to get back down?
@@vc6218 its like a 8 minute ride at most its really not long at all and since you mentioned the waterfront being gentrified they renovated the inside of the ferry too a little lol
The city of Newburgh is totally separate from the Town of Newburgh. The problem is the town of Newburgh is often overlooked due to crime in the city of Newburgh. The town of Newburgh enjoys, little crime , many of the residents are college educated and they have a strong presence of active and retired law enforcement living in the Town. The Town of Newburgh is a totally separate municipality than the City of Newburgh.
Law enforcement seems to be a popular career path for those living in the town of Newburgh. A significant portion of the retired or active police officers in the area previously served with the MTA PD, NYPD, TNPD, or other police departments in PA. In fact, nearly half of the residents in my neighborhood are either currently working or retired from careers in law enforcement. This growing trend of cops relocating to the Town of Newburgh can be partially attributed to many wishing to leave New York City and other jurisdictions due to high taxes and high crime, and liberal policies. Other common professions represented in the community include various city workers, particularly those formerly with the MTA, as well as retired firefighters. In short, those with backgrounds in public safety make up a good portion of the population here.
Property values have more than tripled since covid. speculators have bought up the majority of available buildings for a pittance . go to TRULIA real estate site, scroll across the top row until the "more" column, and view the sold section to get a clear picture of what is going on in Newburgh.
