I was very close to not uploading this video, so many things went wrong and I wasn't happy with how the final product looked in my small living room, but I knew this would still be helpful to many, so we decided to release it anyways. I will say, If you can get access to a bigger room, you're going to get much better results. That's my number one piece of advice once you finish this video. FIND A BIG ROOM!
Please comment any questions you have below, I'd be glad to answer them.
Stick around. You'll probably regret it eventually.

That was so great! Now, could you do a video on self tape where the actor is doing the entire set up, framing, body shot within a tight space with you narrorating. I find myself doing this lately a lot since not everyone is always available when I need them. So, I would have to jump behind the camera and then in front while camera is rolling just see eventually if I like the set up and if I'm too centered or just right. This would help out greatly. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Fantastic! The only thing I'd add is the mask and desaturation to take the background black I wouldn't recommend. For a similar reason you wouldn't want a headshot for someone wearing black with black hair on a black background, you're subsequently blending the subject into the background with very little contrast. In general, a more neutral lighter color will add some more depth and contrast to the image. Then we can see the subject perfectly and watch them perform without distraction. If we have to squint to make out his highlights, you've gone too far. Additionally, casting doesn't exactly want to see a cinematic finished film product. That's for the director and crew to do when you're on set :) High quality setups certainly set you a part, but I wouldn't do any fancy bicolor backlighting. It's a bit distracting and the reason for a self tape is to see the actor act. Always think about the actor that will be in front of the camera and ask yourself the question, what's unique about them and how we can extrapolate on those features? For example, bringing out the depth on a subjects face or lighting their hair to show off the color. I'd stick to a key light and a fill with absolutely no crazy color on it. Keep it to daylight between 5500-6500 kelvin at the very most. Diffuse the sucker and give it an edge light to give the subject dimension. If it's a heavy drama, some negative fill can be nice, but again, we don't want you to infringe a tone upon casting an actor in a self tape. Show YOURSELF off, not your gear.

Fantastic video and learned a lot! But was curious - I thought you wanted to make the background as boring as possible so the casting director can focus on your performance/not get distracted?

Good stuff. I've just setup my self taping in my garage with two bi-color Neewer LED panels and an ESDDI panel for my edge light. The challenge I have is that I don't have a DSLR with a good lens. I'm using my iPhone 12 (which is what a lot of us actors are using) It would be cool to see a video using an iPhone with your light set ups. Keep up the good work. Learning a lot.

So the good thing about this setup is that you can pretty much accomplish the same look with any camera including an iPhone! However, if you’d like I could take a look at how to get the best images (with an iPhone) and put together a list of tips for iPhone users!

@@filmfluence1682 that would be awesome! I’ve started using the Filmic Pro app to shoot video on my iPhone because you can manually adjust things. I was getting a lot of digital noise with the iPhone video. I tend to get cast in dark dramas so I like my self tapes to have a moody feel and the iPhone struggles a bit in low light. I dig your videos man. Any suggestions are appreciated!
@filmfluence1682

@@johntague awesome! I’ve used Mavis on iPhone before. Helped a lot! Make sure you’re have enough light to expose to without pushing iso too high so you can reduce your noise. But don’t just throw as much light at your actor that you can. Strive for contrast. Then you can control how moody it looks with angles/contrast/color correction, etc. I’ll see if I can try to make a video on it soon. I’m super busy with the show I’m producing right now and some other projects, but as soon as I get free time I have full intentions on making tons of more videos! Thanks so much!

Yes. It was just an led above and behind subject. We just used the included gel with the light but you can buy them cheap and clamp with clothes pins if needed.

I've determined the kid looks like a younger Kodi Smit-Mcphee. It's uncanny, actually! Side note...that shot at 8:03 looked downright gorgeous. It felt really...cozy? Like, I could sit and watch a tutorial video for hours with the main speaker in that exact shot setup!

That’s funny! 😂 that’s my brother, he has taken up an interest in film more that he’s older now so we do a lot of work together. He actually is secondary camera operator on the show we are filming right now! I agree! It’s very soft and inviting I feel like. Can you take a guess what the next video is going to be about? You’ll probably never guess it lol. Also, any ideas you’d like to see us do?

@@filmfluence1682 I thought he looked familiar - he was in some videos from WarTorn, right? What? A show?! That's epic! Haha, I'd hope another filmmaking tutorial...maybe about sound? If not about sound, I'd love to see how you all capture such clean audio, and your color grading techniques. Maybe even something about building a steadicam on a budget? Or even how to film coherent action sequences? That might be straying away from what your all about on this channel, but I'll take anything you all put out!

I disagree. This doesn't have to be professional equipment. A lamp behind a $1.25 plastic table cloth from Dollar Tree. Another lightbulb behind a stainless steel salad bowl, also from Dollar Tree. Hang an LED light from a ceiling fan. Be creative. Don't find a problem for every solution.
