+Matthew Moniz yeah I can imagine. ;) Plus the fact that google's partners with LG and Motorola often too. So, many manufacturing names are tied with these google phones. :)
+Mike Cox It's a feature of Android Marshmallow in general, which means the Note 5 will get it once it gets the upgrade. Not really an advantage over the other. Plus, the Note 5 has its own crazy version of power saving that turns the screen to black and white and shuts most of your background tasks off.
+Henry “Adda” Chaisritha bench marks can help you to figure some tgings like how gaming may flow and some other things, but how you personally use your phone will determin how your phone will perform, compared to how someone else may use their phone, and no one will use their phone the way bench marks do. bench marks are good but real life takes place on a completly different time frame, with completly different dynamics, etc.
Nexus 6p is still the winner because the Note 5 WILL slow down after using it for a month or so and touchWiz sucks. I have the S6 Edge and the video stutters when its hot outside or when I do group text. Just ordered the Nexus 6p; cant wait to get rid of my S6 Edge.
You are 100 percent correct on the Samsung slowing down in a month. My Note 4 is slow as shit right now... it's pathetic when you pay 800+ dollars for it.
+Wassef Kamal I have 2 coworkers with the same experience. Phones were hauling ass out of the box and now there are stutters and hiccups but that's nothing new to lollipop or touch wiz. I'd like to think that the S6 and note 5 would be excellent with vanilla marshmellow. Shame that samsung only did that for a very short window of time.
+Naveen S Exactly, but if you already prefer 6P, that means you don't care about SPen, so put a stock rom on N5 and you're getting a better version of 6P. I tried stock on my old N3, it's crazy how faster it becomes! But I couldn't live without SPen, so i brought the Samsung's rom back. I got the N5 now and I would never put a stock on it.
+nemanja milosevic Not when it comes to the fingerprint scanner and the 6p takes better pictures and WAYY better slow-mo video but the Note 5 take better video. Also the speakers on the 6p blows the Note 5 out of the water. So no the Note 5 isn't "slightly better in pretty much every single aspect" Also the Note 5's RAM management is embarrassing for a phone with that much power and cost that much
I chose the Note 5 over the 6P initially with a lot of hesitation. Never thought I'd ever say it about a Samsung device but the Note 5 is possibly the best phone I've used to date. Beautiful hardware design, and overall more practical for me courtesy of the S-Pen and one-hand mode. Touchwiz is getting there but it's no stock Android, then again the additional functionalities makes it a bit easier on the trade-off with fluidity. I'll probably get the 5x in a month or so as a secondary phone but really happy with the Note 5 so far.
+Ronaldo Rivera Nice! Thanks for sharing. The Note 5 is definitely Samsung's best phone yet. I agree it's an awesome phone and if you like the s-pen then it's the perfect productivity device.
Matthew Moniz yep, it's ironic cause I've always made fun of the S-Pen as a cheap Samsung gimmick and found it to be the best feature (in my opinion at least)
I totally agree, just picked up my note 5 black 64 gig at best buy..First note I've owned..It doesn't feel huge like the previous notes everything runs so smooth and fast with out any lag whatsoever. .
jwchoi721 it did help that a guy I work with had the Note 5, got the chance on some level to try before buying. If you can get it I would recommend the ultra slim case by CaliCase, got it through Amazon and its the best case for the Note 5 for me. Doesn't add to the bulk and actually looks like part of the phone, since my hands aren't that big this helps a lot.
I have found that the Note 5 is the best phone in the world as long as you don't use it much. the people that use it the least seem to be the happiest with it.
Overall, really nice video. I think you're evaluation of the two was pretty much spot on, with the exception of two things. The first is a nit-picky thing, but, you plainly say that the fingerprint sensor on the 6P is more accurate, but then discount that and declare the results a tie. Huh? I mean, sure they might be crazy close in performance, but you kinda gave the 6P the verbal nod, and then took it away. The only other thing that stood out to me was your declaration of the Note 5 as the better low light camera. Granted, this is a highly subjective area, but to me, the 6P photos you showed looked richer, with more contrast and detail than the Note 5 low light images, which seemed overexposed, too cool (color temperature) and sort of washed out. Now, I wasn't there, so I have no idea which produced the more accurate reproduction of the actual scene, but overall the 6P images were more pleasing to me. Almost every review I've seen comparing the two gives low light performance to the 6P, crediting the larger sensor size as the reason. All of that being said, I was impressed that you acknowledged the smooth operation of the 6P despite only having 3gb of ram. So many of your contemporaries like to judge performance solely based on the benchmarks, which you pointed out can differ from real world experience. So kudos to you, nicely done!
+Louis Caputo Thanks Louis!! I appreciate the well thought on comment. I didn't give the fingerprint scanner a Tie. I gave that round a tie, since it was based on display, fingerprint scanner and sound. I weigh a good display and sound higher than a fingerprint scanner. But scanners are good that it's not something that someone would say oh wow I'm going to get this phone over the other because the fingerprint scanner is a tad faster or more accurate. I think anyone who uses either will be satisfied and not really think about it. I agree the camera is subjective. I think the photo I showed in low-light does a bad job at showing the difference. I think for future reviews I'm going to include a link in the description below where people can view a much larger gallery of photos and make their own decisions. Thanks again for the feedback (which is always welcome) and for watching!
Note 5 comes with features that I will use and does it better and prettier. 6P is just another android phone with no distinguishable unique features except for that fingerprint scanner at the back of the phone and that Marshmallow OS. Different phones for different people.
+Shadow Slayer One more thing: Samsung users don't even realize that their phones lag until they use a Nexus or and iPhone. Okay, two more things: All Samsung phones drop frames like crazy. Compare the smooth 60fps on iOS/stock Android to the pervasive jank of touchwiz. Not even in the same league.
Jerrad Flaherty I have used a Nexus and it isn't any different and don't call me a Samsung user, Samsung users only use Samsung while I use a note 5, m9, g4 so I'm a multi phone user
Matty Mo'! Great video, once again. You broke down all the great features of both phones. I like that 6P. Stock Android. Front-facing, loud speakers. Beautiful.
How is the screen on the Nexus 6p compared to the note 5? I know both are 5.7 inch screens but are they the same screen to body ratio? Or is the Nexus 6p a smaller display?
Thank you so much for comparing the screen brightness at max and showing it on both phones. Tons of reviews miss this which is super important to me because I work in the daylight. Subscribed.
Great review. I've seen a lot of N6P and Note 5 reviews lately and I feel you demonstrate a good level of objectivity. So many people just want to declare one or the other the undisputed leader and call it a day. I own the Nexus 6P so obviously I prefer it to the Note 5. However, I admit there are some things the Note 5 does better, just as there are things the N6P does better than the Note 5. I wish I could combine the best aspects of both into one Uber-Phone but, as that is not an option, I've chosen the one that serves my requirements better. I have to shake my head at some of the comments, which can be pretty juvenile and unhelpful. What good does is do to say "Note 5 is king kills all else N6P sucks, die!"? That adds nothing to the conversation and just puts your bias and lack of maturity on full display. Anyway, I have subscribed and will look forward to your future reviews/videos.
Thanks Tony! Welcome to the channel and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You're absolutely right one phone is never entirely better than the other. It always comes down to preferences and needs. Too bad more viewers don't share your thought process.
Matt mystifying us with the age old question... Is it a 5 o'clock shadow or a planned "I care but I don't care about shaving but I'll trim it so it's not a mess but still has that rugged look like I chop down trees for a living in the middle of Canadian winter with no gloves on" kind of beard. You go boy.
If you go on reddit, you can read about all the hardware problems of the Nexus 6p (bending, audio ports, speaker imbalance, finger print scanner not working, pink blobs on screen, etc.). What is the point of having good software if the hardware won't last? In Canada, the Note 5 is only $100 more so I think it's the more long term option. Plus the performance of the Note 5 destroys the Nexus 6p.
Love your reviews man keep it up!!! Loving my nexus 6p.... I like the aay u explain the performance by splitting it up in two types (real world use and test scores) other reviewers don't usually do that. And kept it very unbiased.
I had a difficult time choosing between those phones, but i bought the note 5 because it has more to offer. I just wished the note 5 had dual-facing speakers.
The huge advantage is support from Google in terms of a warranty plan and also up to date updates. It takes Samsung FOREVER to get to update. Plus Stock Android.
You should've done this comparison a couple of weeks back when I was deciding between the Nexus 6P and Note 5. 😉 You already know I went with the Nexus anyways. ☺ At any rate, great comparison, Matt!
I love my Note 5! My bro-in-law has the Nexus 6p and it is also a great phone! As far as the Camera app on the 6P, one can simply be downloaded from the Google play store that will mimic the Samsung camera app or one that is better than the native one.
Hey Matt, great review. You just picked up a new subscriber to your channel (and believe me I am pretty particular lol). As far as the phones go, I have been on the verge of ordering the 6p for the last 2 weeks. Something was holding me back from doing so..but your review really helps make my decision much easier. I also like the fact the 6p can be used with Project Fi . I am a frequent traveler to Poland and there are some pretty awesome rates there using Fi and also you are able to use data (3g) on Fi at no additional cost which is GREAT! The phone itself looks sexy, the specs are amazing , stock android puts it over the top and the Camera is the icing on the cake. So what have I been waiting for?!
+Juve S Great points and I think you made the right decision. The 6P is definitely the best Android phone of the year! Let me know how you like it when you get it! Thanks for subscribing and watching! Welcome to the channel = )
I bought Nexus 6p 3 days ago and I personally feel happy because I had zenfone with 4 gigs of ram but it wasn't as fluid as nexus. It's a real flagship mobile. Even with 3 gigs of ram it's the most fluid android mobile.
6P owner here. This is one of the best smartphone comparison videos I've ever watched. Very detailed and informative (love your voice too). I'm hally that you picked the Note5 in almost every categories but still chose the 6P in the end. :)
Thanks Steven! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) the note 5 has a lot of good things going for it but in the end I felt the 6p was the better device. Thanks for watching !
I've never even heard of the Nexus 6p until now. For me it's always been iphone vs note and currently I own the note 5. This nexus phone isnt too bad, I would never own one but still a good phone.
When I finally replaced my Galaxy Note II, I thought it would be with a Note 5, S6 Edge Plus, or one of the upcoming Motorola phones. Then the Nexus 6P came out and I snatched up its 128 GB version without hesitation. One of the things I like best is how much easier it is to type accurately with the 6P's onscreen keyboard, a sore point with both the Note II and my Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 tablet. The new Note and Edge series are also glass phones, susceptible to shattering on both the front and the back and to always looking smudgy from fingerprints. The 6p is beautiful in a much more natural and low maintenance way. Although I do miss being able to scribble down things like phone numbers and email addresses with the Note's stylus, using the accurate voice recognition is more efficient than scribbling. I don't miss Sumsung's odd forays into redundant software, Tizen, etc. Thanks for validating my decision with your own opinion, too.
I have an IPhone 6s Plus space gray.. And I have been watching reviews on the 6p. Mainly positive reviews I'd say. And you saying that the 6p is better then the note 5 really confirms my decision in getting this phone. It looks so attractive! Definitely gonna get it in frost white color. Thanks for the review!
Well not necassarily switch but just to have the 6p as a second phone. But if i had nvr gotten the 6s i would have never gotten it in the first place. And the 6p is definetely a phone worth my money ;)
The 6p is AMAZING. I've owned 15 phones now. This is hands down, the best phone. The 6p is everything you need. Dont buy into the Samsung gimmicks, the phones bloatware is mindblowing and really makes the phone feel sluggish and overheated. The 6p is beautiful, lightning fast, gets ALL DAY battery life, as in I woke up at 8 am used it until now 12:44 am the next day and my phone still won't die, it gets android updates right as they come out, the fingerprint sensor actually feels amazing and works super fast, its free of bloatware. Google apps were the only apps on the phone. I've had a note 2, 3, 4 and I'm done with Samsung and their sluggish phones. 6P for the win!!
Had the Note 5 for two weeks before selling it to buy a Nexus 6P. Stock Android, in my mind, always wins over gimmicky features typically found in TouchWiz. I will give the Note 5 the edge when it comes to overall design, but the 6P looks more unique.
In your conclusion you mention quick charging as an advantage to the note 5? Not only does the the 6p have the quick charge feature, but I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) it is industry leading at 7 hours in 10 minutes.
I've owned both devices, and you're right, you absolutely can't go wrong either way. Both devices are FANTASTIC! Personally, I decided to go with the Note 5 because of the wireless charging capabilities as-well-as a more polished option for mobile payments. While I like the look and performance of stock Android better than I do Touchwhiz, you are able to theme a Note 5 pretty easily (and cheaply) to make it look like stock Marshmallow, and the added features that Touchwhiz provides are more useful to me. It was VERY close though...The Nexus 6P IS the best Nexus ever, but the Note 5 just works better for me. Great comparison video.
Have both and eventually my 6p started slowing down, opening up apps late and stuff like that. This is truly a tough one, it's about the s pen and whether you use it or not. I decided to get the note 5 again just for that, but they are 2 of the best androids out still as of today date.
+Jordyn M You're welcome! I wouldn't get to worried about the build quality. People are always trying to find ways to get the extra attention. The build quality is fine.
I think they the winner is the 6P it is unlike other skinned versions of android like Samsung and HTC etc it is running fast stock Android that has better material design elements and it gets updates fast
Thanks! I appreciate it and I'm glad you found it helpful. You'll love the nexus 6p such a good phone. The intro song is called quirky and happy. I got if off audioblocks.com
Matthew Moniz No problem. Great video, can't believe I haven't subscribed until now. I'm actually buying a phone in the next month or 2 and I'm having a hard time choosing between the iPhone 6s plus, Nexus 6p, Note 5 and Moto X. I'm leaning more towards the 6p because of stock Android, updates and consistency in performance. Will you be covering the Moto X Pure/Style?
+Dante Bradley Thanks Dante, while I'm glad you found my channel. The Moto X is a good phone for the price, but the nexus 6p is much better and the Note 5 is great if you like the extra features samsung adds and the edition of the spen. Personally, I'd aim for the nexus 6p it will run smooth for at least 3-years along with getting updates right away. I want to review the pure/style but it's not available in Canada, so I don't think it's going to happen.
Thanks Anik!! Definitely the 6p. They're both great but your phone will get updates right away and if you plan on keeping the phone for 2-3 years it will stay nice and smooth. Stock Android runs amazing on the 6p it's the fastest experience I've had so far with an android phone this year.
I might be a little late, but the Nexus 6P does in fact have fast charging. It's a custom solution made by Google so it's not QuickCharge or something, but still just as good.
Hey Matt...great vid man! I just wanted to ask if i should get the nexus 6p or wait for the next one. Im currently rocking an S5 and im kind of bored of samsung software. Please help me out here 😂
just got my nexus 6p. I did not know that was such a learning curve involved. the finger print is definitely faster than both the note 5's I had. speakers are nice. nice pictures/different than note5, but id say equal for their differences. im looking forward to this device continuing to work well, without the 2 to 3 month lag/glitch break-in period. sure do miss all the note 5 amenities, but im willing to see how this goes. I did get better battery life today than I would expect from a note 5.
+wagfinpis Nice! I'm glad you're enjoying the Nexus 6p, it's an amazing phone. I do too would rather sacrifice the extra bells and whistles for smooth performance. Thanks for watching!
great video. I'm still undecided which will be my next phone. probably I will go with the N6P, but I need to see the phone in person. any idea if this Nexus will be available on USA Carriers.
+Rice5phere Meh, that's not something that's important for 98% of people who buy a phone. It's a very small portion of people who mod their android device or Jailbreak their iPhone. Most people buy the phone and use it as is. If I was running a youtube channel dedicated towards tinkers or installing custom roms and modding your phone (or even just android phone period) then this would of been important to mention. Thanks for watching!!
Good balanced observations. I do feel needing a little clarification on the charging. The Nexus 6P does offer fast charging; just no wireless charging. Also, I think it would be fair to mention storage capacity; in which Nexus 6P offers three variation while Note 5 only offers two (Samsung being capped with only 64gb on the high side, while Nexus goes up to 128gb). Finally, another factor to be considered is pricing. Overall good review!
The nexus 6p does have fast charging I only said it doesn't have wireless of fast wireless charging. You're right storage offerings should of been mentioned! Thanks for the feedback and for taking the time to watch!
Good comparison. Personally I don't like the glass back on the note 5. It's glossy, slippery, and gets smudged so easily. I find the 6p easier to hold despite being wider with bigger bezels. Metal just looks and feels better than glass. Even the beautiful frosted glass on the xperia z5.
I agree it can be more slippery but I find the curved back on the note 5 to help with that. But I verbally agree metal usually feels easier to hold. Thanks for watching!
You forgot to cover the prices!!! I had the Nexus for two day but I was unfortunate to get the bad apple out of the bunch. It had camera issues so I returned it back to Google. I will now try the Note5. Thanks for comparing the phones.
Most people only like the 6P because of the StockAndroid.. but in reality the Note5 is way better in all aspect except the price. Still I'm glad I chose the Note5.. my dual gold has no problem at all in multitasking even if I open 15apps...the display is unrivaled and the camera is just THE best...
+Ariel Herrera The Note 5 is certainly awesome and does do a few things that Stock Android can't and to be quite honest no matter which phone you choose out of the two you're going to have a good experience. However, the reason why Stock android is so nice is how great it runs. If you use both of these phones, you'll see the difference in terms of fluidity. No other Android phone on the market runs as smooth on a day to day basis as Nexus device. Also, you get those updates right away, which is also really nice! Thanks Ariel for watching!
is the previous generation nexus 6 a decent upgrade over the s5. I can get it for £280. Are there any other phablets around this price that you reccomend
I wouldn't bother I'd stick with s5 not really worth the upgrade. Maybe check out the lg G4 not sure how much that goes for where you live and the Moto X Style
ultimately it does come down to personal preferance. I have a Nexus 6P and love it, especially with the improved camera. I am also a business user and have no need for a smartpen or stylus. I find the look of the 6p is modern and and unique compared to the old fashion look of the note 5. But again thats only my personal view.
Nice job on the comparison... I think the note five is the better phone because of the added functionality and the design, but the front speakers of the P6 would be sweet.
I wonder which would be the better choice for me coming off of a G3. I really like my mom's Note 4, so naturally I'm going towards the Note 5 but this review really is making me think about the Nexus.
I prefer stock Android on the 6P over touchwiz,so software goes to 6P. The lack of expendable memory pisses me off. RAM is OK on the 6P. No OIS on the 6P sucks,so videos are smoother on the N5 . At the end I would choose the 6P because of faster updates and stock Android. But here in my country Samsung phones are cheaper than Nexus phones . Ex:The Galaxy S6 costs less than the Nexus 6(2014). So the circumstances are to choose the Note 5.
great comparison, one more thing that should have been addressed though is price point. the nexus 6p starting price of 499 is much more compelling then Samsungs
+Sawyer Seth THanks Sawyer! I kept the price out of this video, but I did include it in my top 5 smartphones of 2015. Feel free to check it out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qg_rBkI9qhQ.html
