Hey everyone!
Very excited to showcase the first piece of music I have composed, recorded and produced for my upcoming first person point n click adventure game, Neyyah - all delivered in-game, with visuals, sound fx and all things Neyyah!
It's been wonderful delving into Neyyah's musical score. Having a background in performing, writing songs, teaching and producing music, it's a breath of fresh air to put this dev hat on and take a step away from all the engine and art based work which has hugely dominated the development process of Neyyah, since 2018 when I first began developing the game.
Although I have already created a lot of sound fx for the game - returning to Sonar Cakewalk Platinum and introducing my trusted sound recording buddy MOVO (a Tascam recorder fitted with a cute fluffy movo buffer) - composing the music for Neyyah is something I've been itching to do for a long time. Alas, being the sole developer of Neyyah, many jobs require huge amounts of focus, time and energy to make happen ... It's paid off so far in the world design and the gameplay of the game in general! Now, it's time for music. This opens a whole new dimension of possibilities for the game.
My main focus is getting music recorded and implemented into the game for the demo release later in the year. While my initial plan was to finish everything else for the game then compose music, I think this is a smarter move. Plus, it also gets a flow and vibe going for the music scoring - what sounds I use, the mix within the game, and also other engine based challenges which will come up ... For example, there will be an option in the game called 'Music Lover', which will play more continuous music for those players who LOVE their music in games. I personally love the pockets of sound ambience within a game, and Neyyah has some very detailed rich sound scapes, so by default from my own artist direction, I have had to plan where music will be best and most effective in game - but the Music Lover option breaks away from that, which is a nice option I feel for the player to have!
This video shows one of the locations I have recently composed music for. It is, in fact, the first place in Neyyah which has had music implemented to. Saying that, you'll notice music does play in previous test build showcases - such as the ones linked below. I composed and produced these pieces too, but they were recorded a while back, mainly using a bass guitar, and provided a test bed for those early game tests. This is a very different process, where I am putting a massive amount of time and energy into producing music for the game. The process is actually speeding along nicely, however. Once music is finished for the game's demo, I'll be moving onto more Blender / 3D related tasks, which I'm also very excited to get back into!
One feature I will like to implement is a music volume control, as well as the extended option of having more music in the game through 'Music Lover'. I think this will give the player more control on the music, whether they don't want any music at all and only sound! My job is to also make sure the music gets mixed the best way possible into the game. The sound development involved challenges such as this - getting levels right between locations, so audio levels didn't jump randomly or get too quiet before getting loud again ...
I use a Yamaha PSR E463 keyboard to create the bulk of Neyyah's music - along with the following FX pedals: an NUX Atlantic delay & reverb, an Electr-harmonix Cathedral stereo reverb, and will be experimenting more with a DynoMyRoto Chorus. I may also be aiming to use bass guitar in certain tracks, as well as some experimental percussive instruments.
Stay tuned for an upcoming 'music production' dev log video, where I start a new piece of music for the game, showing my process in laying down the first tracks in Sonar Cakewalk, as well talking more about the music featured in this video - the layers behind the music and how I implement the music into Visionaire Studio 5. I will also showcase the new finished piece of music at the end of the dev log!
More on the 'Music Lover' option coming soon too!
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed this little visit into Neyyah :) Excited for the moments ahead with Neyyah!

As a child, after completing Myst, I always wanted to make a similar game. My desire was all the greater with Riven. But at the time the means were different from today and life followed its course. I am very happy to have discovered this channel some time ago now. I appreciate your progress and I will be very happy the day of the release. The nostalgia of the time spent with my father solving the puzzles will unfortunately never happen again, but the feeling of feeling the breeze of the wind and new puzzles on a desert island makes me very happy :) Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for reaching out, and it's very touching. The feeling of nostalgia is at Neyyah's core ... I remember the same feelings with my dad and brother as a kid, and I knew that going into game dev, this was the route I wanted to take: creating worlds, prerendered graphics, point n click navigation. The package is very charming, and I hope to bring a new universe and experience for adventurers who also share that same nostalgia, passion and the same memories from back then :) Thanks for following Neyyah!

I'm always consistently impressed by your ability to make everything simultaneously feel Myst-like but also your own style, and this amazing track has followed that trend. This song just feels like I'm traveling through a portal, I can't even describe it. I am so excited for this game, and also so happy with your progress. Keep up the amazing work!

Thank you! I am inspired by so many other things, not just games but films and even books too - but also from the places I've lived in too. I'm so glad the music gives you that vibe. It's getting that balance of making it not too distracting, but not being too ambient, as I'd like the OST to really take you on a journey too, taking you back to Neyyah.

@AaronGwynaireGameDev
@AaronGwynaireGameDev Год назад
@@dustingarner4620 Regards music, I'd say Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, James Horner, Robin Miller, Hans Zimmer ... But outside of music, games like Myst and Riven, of course, but also Tomb Raider and Might & Magic series, Broken Sword games (some hints of music insp there too!). Films: Waterworld, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars ... So many :)

Loving the sound and music in this. It really feels like a lost Myst/Riven age. I can't wait to explore this world. Thanks for adding options for the different music modes. I think having the pause of music is better so the user can appreciate the sound design and really get immersed in the world itself.

Looking forward to revealing the entire world of Neyyah with you. It's going to be a very large world to explore, so will have lots of music and sound :P I think it's a cool option, as while I love music, I also love what sound by itself can achieve too :)

@@AaronGwynaireGameDev Definitely an option to just have the sounds of the places... and easily alter .. in game.. the volume of the music.. objects and sound of the water etc. Multiple audio tracks? I assume they will be in stereo. I've been watching for a while... It's really nice 😻 Would you be interested in some other constructive feedback? I seriously looked into building a Myst/Riven slide style game over 10 years ago.. finding a simple engine (I found AM and some others) but they wouldn't work on W10 etc ... that was what really stopped me.. I did a load of slides from the nodal points, backing up the camera position for rotational perspective and angled down slightly... I hope this shows I have an understanding. I'm a designer not coder. Regards Mark.

@@mySeaPrince_ Yeah. I think sounds will be default, and having the music volume should be enough, as the bare bones of the game world will be sound / ambience etc. The music lover option is there for areas where i have set sound as the default space, but music can play if you prefer :) And yep, everything will be stereo. Certain sounds in game such as levers and buttons are mono, as they stand out against the other stereo mixes. Feel free to give any feedback!

@@AaronGwynaireGameDev Thank you for your reply. I'm here to help. The one thing I have noticed but not able to explain is the rotational transitions... If you do rotational in Riven it flows differently.. smoother? Something is different. When going from level to looking up there is a trick they used in Riven.. not difficult to do.. There are several places... One might have been going from the wood pulp boiler up the hand hold ladder to the hatch.. which you have to open by going through the dark tunnel to unlock it. I'm going from memory... I studied the slides of Riven etc.. I actually extracted them from the game to look at as JPGs I used two little programmes that extracted all the pictures and video from the game's on disc... The same forums had info about getting Myst and Riven working on W7... Myst masterpiece will run on a clean version of W7.. that's not been on the net or had any updates. I think one was called Reverlator, they were on the forums.. I've probably got them on a harddrive. If it would help I can try and find the slides and information. Just remembered the game engines... Pipmak and another AM had a simple UI.

There'll be other points where I'll be doing this, as other jobs need to get down early April, but demo wise, going fantastic :) I haven't heard of these? I'll look them up!
