Hello Neyyah adventurers!
I am very excited to showcase some of Neyyah's optional feature: 'Faster Travel'. This has come up in conversations / posts / discussions a few times in Neyyah's development, and I thought I'd finally reveal some of the mechanic at work within the game and talk about it more.
Originally, I was going to focus on keeping it 'realistic' - in the sense that it would operate at a certain distance from every node you were at within the game. However, more so recently, I thought it would be cool to push it a bit further outside of the box, evolving it further than the zip mode found in the latter Myst and Riven games.
From a high angle / distance shot as featured in this dev log, you can easily click on any given point of the world around you and get there instantly. Scenes like this aren't just beautiful immersive eye candy anymore. With Faster Travel enabled, they become maps with transportation hotspots - a similar design seen in more traditional point n click adventure puzzle games such as The Longest Journey and Broken Sword, and more so recently games such as The Excavation of Hob's Barrow and the upcoming game Foolish Mortals (links below!).
I also show the behind the scenes workings of the Faster Travel option within Visionaire Studio 5 game engine, and you'll see the attention to detail given to every hotspot and how they have been implemented.
While traditionally and by default Neyyah should be experienced with careful observation, and taking your time to explore the vast complex world you are in, this feature will speed things up a little, if back tracking becomes an issue ... and there will be a lot of backtracking in Neyyah. Neyyah is a non-linear game experience, and the vastness opens up a list of possibilities, so Faster Travel takes care of time saving - if you wish to use it!
One piece of advice I mention within the video in relation to using the Faster Travel mechanic is making sure to stay aware of when the Faster Travel cursors (there are three - forward, forward left and forward right) appear on screen, to avoid any accidental leaps of Neyyah traversal!

Looking forward to the finished product! 🙌 As for zip mode - my personal opinion is that we don't need hotspots "everywhere", one or two per frame is more than enough imho :)

The idea behind the push for more hotspots and further distances is to cut down time needed to back track, but also generating results faster for the player - a console in the distance, getting there instantly, without any traversal. However, it is optional, and perhaps there could be a couple of tiers which deliver less or more faster travel hotspots

I loved the old Myst Game. Your game looks very nice. This is giving back to me the feeling of the past when I was young. I think I will purchase your game on steam when it is available.

Such an incredible feature to add to the game. This type of thing can appeal to a variety of players and be tailored to what one is doing in their current game, whether backtracking, puzzle solving, or exploring. Brillant idea and perfect execution!

Fast travel is a great option. When you have been walking up and down the same area for quite a few times it gets a bit tedious having to keep going click click click click click click haha nice touch :)

Thanks! It runs differently to zip mode in Myst. You can run it from the get go - some areas you cant unless youve gained access to them. The high vantage points act like a map of sorts which i thought was a cool touch - a bit more of my classic pnc adventure game influences coming in from games such as Broken Sword etx

Faster Travel is a really great feature in games like this. Saves you all the tediousness of "walking" a to g via bcdef :P (i assume you will have to "travel around" to solve a puzzle in some place to opens something somewhere else) Really like the high angle gives you more spots. Just make sure you need to been visiting a spot before you can skip too it :)

Yes, exactly right, which is one of the reasons I really wanted to get this feature in. It works similar to zip mode, but I figured it could take you further afield and work for actual elements of a scene - I think a lot of players in Riven / Myst tried clicking on certain areas of a scene which were realistically out of reach for them, so then working out you have to click forward a couple of times, then turn right and you're there, which can sometimes leave players confused at first. I haven't currently got Faster Travel set to be available in only traversed locations, as I figured you might as well keep it off until you're looked around anyway - but there are certain places which it won't work for, as you need to actually gain access via unlocking a door etc :) Glad you like the feature! It won't be for everyone, as the point of a game like this is to take your time, but Neyyah is a big place to explore, so this will help at times!

Wonderful, Aaron. Love everything that you are doing here. I do love the fast travel option that you have as well. If I'm trying to solve a puzzle in one area and the solution or key item is on another side of the island or even map, I need to be able to high-tail it over there. My short term memory stinks, so I gotta be able to get there quick and I know I get distracted easily HA!

Glad you like the option! I think it will definitely help in areas where you may get a bit stuck on routes back to a certain area, but also cuts time on back tracking, which Neyyah requires from the player - but this in itself is part of the adventure! The option is there when you need it, and I'm glad I've expanded the original reach of its effect at every given scene :)

OMG this game looks FANTASTIC! A few months ago I was looking for a game like Myst to play, but they all seemed too modern and lacked the charm that Myst and games back in the day had. But THIS. Now THIS looks like the real deal. It's on my Steam wishlist. Thanks for posting about your game on a Facebook forum.

Wow! Really appreciate it the reach out :) Means a lot. Neyyah is made from a strong nostalgic drive for those older point n click games, particularly Myst and Riven. There was such charm in those games, and I know those fans of that vibe will love Neyyah. I believe I have created something which calls out to that nostalgia, but delivers something very unique, new and different too. Thanks for wishlisting Neyyah!

Naww! I'm sure it won't ever get used much ... I barely used zip mode in Myst and Riven, but did find it somewhat obscure, not really knowing when it would show up. Faster Travel is a lot more instantaneous, reacts clearer and can take you further if needed.

It would be awesome if there was a keybind to switch traversal modes rather than having to go to settings every time. Sometimes I want to backtrack quickly and other times I want to be fully immersed.
