Chris Johnson almost broke the rushing record in 09 but the run that would have gotten the record got called back for holding. The ref later admitted he made the wrong call
So i looked into and I misremembered. The final game of the season he had a 60 yard run that got called back early in the game that the ref later admitted was wrong. It would not have gotten him the record it would’ve put him really close had it stood. He had 134 yards without and the extra 60 would have put him at 2066 yards only 40 yards short of breaking the record. Considering it was early in the game its not unlikely that he could have gotten the record but the game played out differently and cj ended up 100 yards short
As for Derrick Thomas, he almost had 8 sacks but Dave Krieg was able to shake him and throw the game-winning TD pass. The Seahawks starting LT during that game is current Chiefs OL Coach Andy Heck.
In addition, Krieg would later become Thomas's teammate for two seasons starting in 1992 when the Chiefs acquired him as a Plan B free agent. After taking every snap in 1992 for a Chiefs team that made the playoffs, Krieg would be Joe Montana's backup in 1993.
The frustrating thing about Watt's "almost" is that there was a tackle he made late in the season, I want to say it was on Huntley, that was counted as a -2 yard "run" by the quarterback instead of a sack for some reason. He should have the sack record.
And, out of the 15 games he played, he went out early in 2 or 3 of them, which means his total games played is actually more like 13 if you look at the actual time he played.
If anything, Jared Allen (2011) and Justin Houston (2014) were more agonizing than T.J. Watt (2021) since at least T.J. tied the record. Allen & Houston both fell 0.5 sacks short even though they both tried their damnest in their respective seasons' last game (Allen got 3.5 sacks vs the Bears while Houston got 4 sacks vs the Chargers).
Before the video even starts, Cooper Kupp almost getting Calvin Johnson's single season receiving yards record came to mind, both with Matthew Stafford as quarterback.
Great video. As usual. Only thing I dislike (in general) is the holding of the current standard against the current players. It isn't TJ Watt's fault that the NFL is 17 games now.. just like it wasnt Maris' fault that he played more games than Ruth etc. I've always hated that "*".
I frequently think about how sports need to bring back all the weird nickname stuff, like Flipper Anderson, Broadway Joe Namath, Primetime Deion Sanders, William "The Refrigerator" Ed "Too Tall" Jones," Dick "Night Train" Lane, etc. Then I hear nicknames like Lester Hayes' nickname and I'm like, "you know, maybe not."
They had awesome names back in the day. Interesting fact about how Lane got his nickname. It had nothing to do with his play on the field. He was afraid of flying. When his team would fly, he would take the night train to where they were playing.
Justin Jefferson almost broke a MN Vikings team record for receiving. However, coach Mike Zimmer didn't want him to break it. Zimmer was fired after the game.
I still see TJ Watt as the co-holder of the sack record. And when it comes to who really has it unofficially it’s probably Deacon Jones from the ‘60s. Tho all pale in comparison to Reggie White’s 21 sacks in 12 games in 1987
Richard "Dick"/"Night Train" Lane's record of 14 Interceptions in one season will never be broken. Also, Flipper Anderson's 336 yard game was an overtime game. Therefore Calvin Johnson's 329 yards was a regulation game. Megatron has the record in my eyes.
Watt did break the record then he was robbed of it. They claim it was a tackle on a run, when Huntley botched the snap, then Watt him. And Strahan's record setting sack was a run. Clearly Farve was running to help his buddy
TJ watt lost half a sack on a defensive penalty by another Steelers defenseman so if not for that said penalty he would’ve beaten the record. Asterisk? maybe but he still would’ve broken said record
My favorite almost record: Drew Brees has the most consecutive games with a passing touchdown at 54 as well as the fifth longest streak at 45. Those two streaks are separated by a single game: @ Atlanta on November 29, 2012. Had he thrown just one touchdown in that game, he'd have a streak of exactly 100, eclipsing the second longest streak of Brady's 52.
@@seamusmcavey3826 Nah funnily enough it was against the Bengals in 2013 that Brady lost it. He was with the Patriots and hit 52 in a win against the Falcons, then went to Cincinnati and lost 13-6. It was super unfortunate. Tbf that was his worst season in New England since around 2005, bc he lost all his receivers and Julian Edelman was the only good receiver after Gronk tore his ACL. But yea the two of them both lost the record in embarrassing ways
TJ was robbed by not getting a sack on Huntley fumbling the snap and the league chalking it down as a -2 yard QB run, on top of the Strahan gimme sack, Watt should own the record no question
In fairness to Lester Hayes, Stickum was banned because it became impossible to keep the balls clean when it was used, not because it was seen as cheating.
I agree the Lions didn’t do enough to keep Calvin healthy, but mentioning Stafford makes you sound silly. He started 139 consecutive games for Detroit, and looks his worst rn after just 2 seasons in LA
I do wonder by how much Terrell Davis would have broken the rushing record in 98, since the Broncos tended to pull him when the game was well in hand, which was most games. Even doing that, he still won MVP that year with over 2K rushing yards.
The giants get 12 sacks in a game and barely win? Calvin johnson played for the lions where you can get over 300 yds receiving and still only get 1 TD. Nobody cares about the vikings or peterson.
Tj got it he missed 2 games Strahan played all 16. Different time. If tj played in the early 2000s when injuries weren't an automatic sideliner he would of broke it by at least 2 sacks
speaking of flipper anderson justg want to drop a little nugget about his highschool, paulsboro its a small less than 500 student public highschool in gloucester county new jersey basically a philadelphia suburb that has managed to have 6 of its alumni make the nfl, flipper anderson, kevin ross, julien davenport, gearld hodges, issac redman and alex silvestro.
Derrick Thomas sacks are disgusting. I don't understand hitting someone that violently. I can't imagine watching nostalgicly old games of getting dragged.
Calvin Johnson retired because of injurys it's was his left ankle or something like that but the lions didn't help him with the shit teams they put around him tho
It's from a famous interview. Jim Rome called Jim Everett, Chris in an interview, referring to him playing soft in the pocket. After a few times, and a warning to stop, Rome continued calling him Chris, and Everett physically attacked Rome right there in the studio.
I disagree with the "asterisk" thing, does that mean that every single 2000 yard rushing season except OJs has an asterisk because they were done in more than 14 games?
I know it wasn't nearly as close, but Jimmy Smith caught 15 passes for 291 yards against the 2000 Ravens, which imo is a much more impressive total than Megatron's against the cowboys
Al Baker holds the sack record. As a rookie he had 23 sacks in 1978 when they threw a lot less. He did have an extra game but given the circumstances, I would say he deserves the recognition most of all.
Packers defense had more holes than a Cheesehead to allow Adrian Peterson to chase the rushing record. They didn't even try to tackle him which left me livid.
I don't know how I feel about Lester Hayes career when I heard he used to use adhesives on his hands to not drop interceptions. Thats clearly a suspension waiting to happen in todays game.
I'm a Falcons fan (yes, 28-3 jokes already acknowledged), and I would've been happier if Clayborn had just stayed consistent throughout his time with us.
Every time like clockwork the sheep fall in line too waych this cte barbaric sport and not ask any questions Bread and circus you will own nothing and be happy Klaus schwab
