Episode 29 - Originally released in the arcades as a spin-off to NBA Jam, this over-the-top football game is an absolute masterpiece. Midway, the king of arcade sports titles, blessed us with this gem and we were ever so lucky to receive an arcade perfect port on the home consoles. Let's take a look at NFL Blitz on the N64.

I’m 38. I played this and NHL 2 on 2 Open Ice regularly in the arcades. Golden age of arcade sports games

Love this game. I had a copy on PC. My dad got me a graphics card or sound card (you know back when you had to upgrade sound cards on your PC to play new games lol) and this game came included in the box. I played the heck out of it. I remember my computer was in the family room and i was always hoping my parents didnt walk by on the screen with the cheerleader on it lol. Good times when your 13 and 14.

@@Marzimus def pick it up, It’s dirt cheap. My buddies and I play it all the time. It never gets old. Def get 03. That’s probably the best year of the trilogy

Ugh that’s the worst. For some reason I never thought to trade in my games for newer stuff like Xbox/ps2. Just never crossed my mind to do it. So glad I didn’t. All the genesis games that I have now were totally worth keeping over time. But yes, def pick up a copy of this. It’s a timeless classic

I remember the one arcade version...I think it was Blitz 99, the arcade cab had an N64 Controller Pak port and you could import your home console plays into the arcade game. Similar to how the Neo Geo memory card worked. Also, pretty much my favorite NFL game...and I'm not that into sports titles.

Yes! Such an awesome feature. I never took advantage of it but just the idea of it seemed so cool at the time (even now honestly lol). Yea this is by far my favorite NFL game too. They don’t make ‘em like they used to

NFL needs to get away from EA exclusivity...wishful thinking I know. I miss the flood of NFL titles we used to have before that terrible agreement between the two. @@VicariouslyRetro

@@raygunpyle yup, totally agree. Think the last non-madden game was NFL 2k5, which is considered a masterpiece. Regardless, it sucks that we won’t have anymore arcade-like releases like this anymore with the NFL

I played this game for hours on end, but I don't think it was during its original run. I bought it later (my first N64 game was Madden 2000) and it could have been after the N64 was already last-gen. I memorized the codes for infinite turbo and faster turbo, which made it really easy. Blitz was the best pick-up-and-play football game, but I have to say NFL 2k5 and NCAA Football 2005 are just plain better overall: lots more features.

Yea same. I didn’t get it at launch, I played it afterwards but I played the crap out of it in the arcades. You’re definitely right in terms of the best pick up n play football game. I’ll admit it’s not loaded with a ton of features, but that’s something I love about it. I can pop it in, and my buddies and I can play it for hours while pounding beers without messing around with options and someone asking “what button does what?”. Now in terms of playing by myself and wanting a legit experience? NFL 2k5 is the way to go. I own that game too and love it.
