There's a great story about an NBA owner who signed a deal that would move his team to Anaheim, then backed out of it at the last minute. Funny enough, this NBA owner was later forced to sell his team to a former Microsoft executive.
I think that was the Sacramento Kings. Several people have tried to buy the team and move them to Anaheim. There is a reason the street in front of the Golden One Center is called "David Stern Way." Stern was instrumental in keeping the Kings in Sacramento. The NBA did not need 3 Franchises in the same area. There was a rumor Steve Balmer was going to buy them and move them back to Seattle, but then the franchise was sold to Vivek Ranadivé.
It’s a shame. You couldn’t get a ticket to Washington in the 80s and 90s. The team was good, had amazing fans, long season ticket waiting list. When FedEx Field opened it was the largest in the league, and it would sellout. 25 years later and the team is an embarrassment. As an Eagles fan I kinda want them to be good, because they’re historic and part of the old NFL.
You can now thank Josh Harris (Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner and Metro DC native) for getting together a wonderful group of investors (Magic Johnson included) to buy the Commanders from Snyder, all pending approval from the other NFL owners.
You forgot Harry Wismer. I mean he owned the Jets back when they were the Titans of New York in the AFL, but if you're gonna do Billy Sullivan, I think you have to do him.
Amen to that. Wismer was completely insolvent to the point that the AFL took over the Titans to avoid the embarrassment of a football team folding in the country's largest media market. Who knows what would have happened had Sonny Werblin didn't become owner of the future Jets
As a Texans fan, I remember you and others threw a lot of shit towards Cal McNair, but as of late, there has been some stability heading in the right direction for the Texans. It started with getting rid of Jack Easterby, and then hiring DeMeco Ryans, Texans legend, to become their head coach.
“In the Year 2000”… man I totally forgot about that guy. Now I’m gonna piss away my whole night watching old Conan O’Brien clips. Sounds like a plan, on “3”, break!
A while back, Philadelphia Eagles debt-ridden owner Leonard Tose sold the team to car dealer Norman Braman. I don't recall if the sale was forced, though.
it's public knowledge that Tose was addicted to gambling, he probably was losing even the clothes on his back. Likely not forced by the league, but the overall situation. He was one of the many people mentioned by Dick Vermeil in his HOF speech
As an aside, I contend that Norman Brainless was one of the WORST owners in NFL history. The day Jeff Lurie bought the team was one of the greatest days in Eagles history!
@@timfortune9 But I like calling them the Commies😁 Although in reality, it would be great to move on, and they better fix that statue! I mean, "statue"....
Not happening. The WC toilet jokes are exactly what lazy entitled people crave. WC stands for water closet, the predecessor to the modern day flush toilet, and let's not forget about the sewage fiasco at FedEx Field some time back. These crap jokes really write themselves, given the state of the team. Something Browns fans may find some sympathy in, if their name have not already been dragged through the mud for the past two decades (not helped that human excrement is also brown in color, so the Browns can literally be called a "crap team" just for their color scheme).
Funny how this video comes out the with the news of the Michael Bidwill allegations also hot off the press. We'll have to see how that plays out, which could result in an update for this video!
I support teams getting away from dogshit owners by any means. Building that "damn good culture" starts at the top with an owner who's not complacent with just putting asses in seats and profiting. 🤘😭
As a (dis)honorable mention: I would’ve added Curly Lambeau, the founder and original owner of the Packers. When the team started to have financial problems and was on the verge of folding (as was very common in the NFL’s early days), he ended up having to sell literal shares of the team to citizens of Green Bay who was willing to buy some. Which is how the Packers got its current and unique ownership structure.
The packers structure is by far the best in the league. Fuck billionaires. They are consistently good and never have to worry about some asshole moving to a bigger market or ruining the teams rep by scandal.
Whoever buys the Commanders is going to need some serious scratch, because the only solution to Fedex field at this point is probably to nuke it from orbit and rebuild.
You forgot former Philadelphia Eagles owner Leonard Tose. He was so mired in gambling-related debt that had it not been for local sports broadcaster Howard Eskin breaking the news about the team's situation, the Eagles would be the team playing in Glendale, Arizona, not the Cardinals.
So you're telling me there's an alternate timeline where like the Packers, Pats fans could own a stake in the team? We truly are in the darkest timeline.
It's amazing that the owners of the lions and cardinals are allowed to stay when they clearly don't have any intention of trying to win. A losing team is more profitable than a winning team.
The redskins got so unlucky because fedex field was built during a small 5-10 year period where stadiums were badly built and it shows. Almost all stadiums which figure in the top 10 worst stadiums were built during that era like the browns, titans, panthers, jags and so on
Always wondered why it went from Sullivan's Stadium to Foxborough Stadium as a kid. Even though I grew up a couple of miles up the road from there, didn't care about the Pats. Easy to fidure out why considering how bad they were from 87-92.
One thing I will say about Richardson is he's still gonna be remembered mostly fondly among Panthers fans for bringing a team to the Carolinas. Obviously we're not gonna deny he was an objectively bad person, but he genuinely cared for the team and he always showed that.
@@gaffneyrailroading1982 To his credit, Tepper is actually re-modeling his approach to ownership and is owning up to his mistakes. And Bryce Young is boutta prove it's not all about size.
I'm thankful for Richardson bringing an NFL team to the Carolinas. However, unlike some Panthers fans, I'm not gonna ignore the shit that he said/did simply because he was the founder.
John and Denise York still do own the 49ers along with their son, who serves as the CEO. Fans have generally softened on Jed in recent years because he doesn't meddle in things the way he used to, allowing John Lynch to do his job. Whether or not that continues to be the case is TBD.
I was reading the other week that Goodell helped Snyder buy off the minority owners of his team for well below market value a few years back. They got a combined $285 million for 20% or so…now that same stake is worth nearly a billion more. Yeah they didn’t appreciate that much in only four years. More proof that Goodell is just the owners puppet…god help you if your have him arbitrating your case against any owner. As we see all the time the owner usually wins and for the rare case like Richardson I would love to know what he was actually guilty of…you know the stuff the league hides because “Jeans Friday” and a casual racial slur usually isn’t enough. Unless you have dirt on the league or your emails are part of the damn good culture.
Now Neil Huntington should sell his sole share of the pirates to Pat McAfee. I honestly see it happening within the next 10 years or so. The way his financial growth in his stock portfolio is looking, its more than possible. Plus he's the first punter since ray guy to become a household name people can respect. He's living a dream right now.
I can’t believe I’m the only person annoyed by the phrase, “Standard rich white-guy stuff!” If you know anything about youth sports, “Standard rich white guy stuff,” is financial generosity. Dumb business people come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.
What I find ironic in all of this that being force to sell the team is not really a punishment as each time they made more money than their initial investment to purchase the team. Synder is going to be walking away from this with alot of money, even though his ego is going to be hurt (billions of dollars is a great cure for a hurt ego).
Eddie DeBartolo was the greatest owner in NFL history. His sister and her son on the other hand? Ugh. And least Jed has stopped meddling like he used to.
I'd say us 9er fans hate John and Denise York more than Jed. Hell A lot of us myself included like Jed. He's proud of the history of the team loves bringing back old players and his uncle Eddie to get the praise they deserve.
FivePoints I'm a little surprised that you didn't put George Preston Marshall on blast. He was the racist founder of the Boston Braves/Washington Redskins/Football Team/Commanders, one whose bias was so ingrained that his team was the last to integrate. He essentially sold his interest in the Skins bc he wanted to move the team into what became RFK Stadium, but was denied due to the arena being a public entity & DC deeming his prohibition of Black players a violation of district policy And on those old NFL Films shows, nothing looked more absurd than white men carrying protest signs saying Keep The Redskins White
Eddie DeBartolo the businessman is a bad person like most rich people . but the owner Eddie was loved by all the players because he believed in making the players happy and putting them first . Jeds hated for how the Garcia/Mariucii thing went down and then again with Harbaugh .
