I fail to understand how do you come to the conclusion NFT will give creators a better revenue cut. Platforms will control the cut they take and they have the users proximity not the NTF creators. So if FB wants to take a larger piece of they pie they will. Moreover the example at the beginning drawing a parallel with the purchase of a painting is totally off. Copying a GIF is producing a perfect copy. Copying Monna Lisa ain’t so simple
@6cryn
@6cryn 2 года назад
I'm a creator and I can tell you exactly how - you just set your percentage of the re-sale in the initial contract; if your artwork re-sales many times, you get an income each time; forget about FB, that's not decentralized.
@stereodark
@stereodark 2 года назад
@@6cryn yeah but that's the point, if you pitch the idea of using these items in Metaverse, the platform provider must agree to that and will charge fees. If FB, Epic and other companies do NOT have any incentive, they will NOT integrate NFT tech and you will NOT benefit from any of the above. You could argue that what's in for them is the higher appeal of their platform over competing ones, but I don't buy that, masses will not shift to another provider due to NFT availability, technology won't move them, they need to get something better and I don't believe there is enough in NFT for the consumers..
@6cryn
@6cryn 2 года назад
@@stereodark I was referring to 1/1 artworks; for avatars and in-game items, we already know that they are interoperable in the metaverses built on the eth blockchain. if FB or other web2 companies are not having an inclusive approach in that respect, they will either die out or live in their own bubble, but that won't be the proper metaverse
@stereodark
@stereodark 2 года назад
@@6cryn your statements are based on tons of assumptions. You are right only if this tech becomes widespread and several millions of users care about it. I don’t see why FB and other providers can’t offer a cheaper proprietary tech which gives fashion digital clothes at 1/100 of the price. NFTs are a very inefficient way to handle this, the only upside is it’s decentralized, but assuming it will be successful because it’s better for the artists it’s a massively long shot.
@6cryn
@6cryn 2 года назад

I guess platforming people who are trying to create something new is what TED does, but I'm a little worried about this one. The TED talk framework here is legitimizing what is essentially a scheme to exploit artists. "Get involved, mint your art (((for a fee))) - it'll be great, trust me, I'm in a TED talk!" No one is interested in buying NFTs for the art, that's not the point. They will buy if they think they can sell it again for profit. All artists joining the movement does is make it look more appealing and legitimate when a lot of people and nice art is nominally involved. Making digital items for games and hangouts seems legit, but I'm not convinced it needs blockchain technology at all. Haven't people been selling custom dragon dicks in Second Life for over a decade now?
@tobylegion6913

I think the technology of an NFT is interesting, but it won't succeed with JPEGs made by teenagers selling for ludicrous amounts. The idea of a decentralized system recognizing the owner of an item could have it's use cases elsewhere, like physical collectibles with a verifiable QR code to an NFT. Because it's trustless, it eliminates the need to trust a company verifying if a baseball card is a genuine for example. Even then though, it'll be hard to market the technology moving forward. The word "NFT" leaves a lot people with a sour taste because of where it is now.

I think what we're more likely to get is augmented reality however, for NFT's to succeed there first needs to be adoption and interoperability. There's no point in owning a $500k monkey picture NFT if you can't even display it. The whole screenshotting thing isn't even the real issue, that can be resolved, the real issue is that there's no single 'world' to display it. In the real world you have a 1 of 1 painting, we all live and breathe the same air, so this issue doesn't exist however, we could see 500 different 'worlds' with no ability to take anything from one to another, then your NFT is essentially limited to that single 'world'. Easiest way to imagine this problem is video games, you can't take a sword from Skyrim and use it in Zelda, even with games that are built and run on the same engine, by the same studio/dev team, you can't do it in most cases.

Ridiculous concept and completely pointless use of technology... Does anyone remember when people used to download software that would analyze genome for cancer research when their computer was idle? Or project Seti that would use the same concept but to search signs of life in space using radio waves? But now we're trying to use technology to do what again? Somehow reproduce real life in a "metaverse" so we can show off digital goods that can be infinitely reproduced at zero costs? People that identify with NFTs have zero concept of what is special about real artwork. It's not just the art or picture itself. It's the story the whole thing tells. From the paints used, to the canvas, to how the strokes were laid to canvas. There's a reason why art is valued so highly. Because no matter how good of a fake someone can make, it'll always be a fake. You can't go back in time and have another Mona Lisa just drawn up. Digital artwork, and anything related to NFTs, is not something that couldn't be copied over and over again completely flawlessly. We live in a world without scarcity. We could literally take care of everyone on the planet and provide the same quality of life for all but yet we would rather create NFTs, Bitcoin, or the next $1,500 cell phone. I'm not even mad about any of those things. I just think it's outright sad as a species this is where we're at.

What cleanses the participant is the physical world not a virtual one. Going to a physical gallery is like a confessional booth, you go in seeking redemption and you come out the other side redeemed. I can't see any sinners being washed in the digital version. LOL. During Covid, we as practicing artists were issued with the virtual alternative, it failed miserably. I'm all for future ways of living, but owning a digital piece of art has little meaning for me. "This new automated tool that allows for guaranteed proof of origination and ownership of music, videos, images, and even text is called an NFT" That is only true if you can provide a step-by-step guide on how to find out the original author of any digital good. Surprise, NFTs cannot do that. If you find a file on the internet, and you want to find out its origins, NFTs are not going to help you. Now you just have to check multiple blockchains in addition to what you have done in a world without NFTs, and even then you cannot be sure because anyone can "mint" any digital good on any blockchain. It's possible that you don't find it on any blockchains, it is possible you find it on multiple blockchains with different authors, and even then the real author will probably not be among them. But ok let's say you get everybody to agree on using the same blockchain, and to utilize fingerprinting for integrity protection. Then what happens if I take the good and slightly change a single pixel? Did I create new art? The blockchain will say yes, but people will say no. NFTs are not a proof of origination of the digital good, you have to search for their "intrinsic value" elsewhere, and please tell me if you found it.

@@6cryn I understand them just fine. NFT's are a pyramid scheme made to create fake hype over a fake "currency" that has no value by letting you waste that fake currency on digital items that have no value. What value is there in something I can just right click and copy to my computer? I've had other people's digital art I've randomly found online since 2006. What keeps me from just grabbing one of those pictures and making an NFT? Nothing. And, that thing attached to the link can get changed at any time, as have been seen by the many many MANY NFT scams. Crypto currency is a currency for criminals, including pedophiles. (who else would feel the need to use a fake currency they believe is anonymous and untraceable?) NFT's are just a pyramid scheme that even has its own money laundering app.

@@suicune2001 the pyramid scheme and the fake hype are true for some projects in the nft market, but the benefits of the entire nft ecosystem are well over-passing the disadvantages. Saving a picture from the blockchain won't give you access to the DAO of that project so it's useless to do that. Everything is traceable in the eth blockchain and not really used by criminals.

The Meta verse doesn't replicate at the real world at all.. there's zero to do and see. They only have the game Beat Sabre at their meta store. And the bottom has already fallen out of the scam which is NFT's. NFT's don't contain any art.. even a JPEG.. they contain a link and those are very fungible. A company still owns the host of that URL... NFTs have no ownership standard whatsoever.. they are only as good as the seller.

99% of artists hate nfts coz people buying and selling them don't care about the art, if they did they would commission the artist. Its just a commodity. And to add injury to insult, every artist with even just the smallest following has their art stolen and minted without their consent. It's literally the worst thing that happened to artists in forever.

Sure I’ll be on the back foot for a while but then the meta thing dies out (and boy will it) me and others who chose real life will still know how to be a human. There’s nothing of tangible value online. No people, no memories, no activities. It’s purely for people who think their lives suck and might have better luck online. I hate to break it to ya but it’ll be an even sadder existence.

Paint the NFTs on canvas and ask buyers to pay using crypto currency. Also, only show them in a place where cameras are not allowed. Music: Perform it in concerts and do not allow recordings of it. Demand payment in decentralized blockchain money. You could also bind it all in digital form on a specific drive that you grant access to offline. Ask for payment in digital money. This is what I should have done with this reply, oh well.

So basically, the only thing that sucks big time about the way NFTs are currently implemented is how companies have implemented them? But what if your creator suddenly stops paying for the host of your file? i'm sorry Elizabeth Strickler, but I'm missing your solutions for the downsides of the ways NFTs are currently implemented. Maybe next time not spend the vast majority of your talk about the same pro's? Also your ending statement that your talk "is not financial advice" rings a lot of bells. @TED I believe this talk is not up to your standards. The technology is promising, this talk isn't.

This is great for explaining NFTs, but I still don't truly get the Metaverse. How do you get on (in?) to the Metaverse? Facebook has something called Metaverse, is it all the same thing? Why on earth would you buy designer clothing for an avatar that only exists in a virtual space? Same for artwork, instead of putting in on your wall and being able to enjoy it each time you look at it, you're basically buying something you can only look at on your phone or laptop? So many questions! The more I learn, the less I understand.
