Another Free Agency video this time focusing on the Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals and the New Jersey Devils. Oh, and little bit about the Rangers..
Ottawa has a lot of mobility now after this off-season. No busted late-term contracts. The one big headache for them Jonas Korp is gone. Leaving the Sens with alot of room to start building the next couple years to 5.
Was the Chychrun return great? No. But he was god awful defensively last year and we needed a RHD desperately. It’s not like he’s Cale Makar out there. I’d rather a vet RHD than an offensive defenseman who plays awful defensively. As for the asset mismanagement, both the Joseph contract and Chychrun trade without a foreseeable future were poor decisions by Dorion. It’s like giving someone oranges and expecting them to make lemonade. Doesn’t work like that
Sens fan here, if you watched sens throughout the year you know that chychrun was very inconsistent, took tons of minor penalties, had a horrendous +/-, and didn’t get along with tkachuk well. Would have been better playing forward for sens. Bad return still but at least Jensen is defensive and more experienced
You are blaming Staos somehow for Dorion's mess. This is not new management's fault. Chychrun lost a lot of value after a terrible season in Ottawa and you can argue Dorion overpaid for him to begin with
@@FullSweatTryhard That's usually the problem in Ottawa, but I don't think that's the situation right now. Joseph didn't ask for a trade, and Chychrun just straight up wasn't good in the role that was available for him here. Staios is trying to change the culture and re-balance the team.
@@FullSweatTryhardman they’ve got everyone they wanted to sign long term. Guys will play in Ottawa chychrun had no future here at all, no cap space and he’s the 3rd best LD on the team
@@carbb5760 nah, guys don’t want to stay here. Who have you been watching? Look at all the starts that leave here to play elsewhere! Chara, Hossa, Havlat, Karlsson, Zibanejad, Fisher, Paul, Stone… the list goes on. We are the NHL feeder team.
Chychrun have been a curse for the Sens. When he joined, they lost for like 8 consecutive games. It was the Mike Hoffman of 2018, they had to trade him. Steve Staios just cleaning all the issues in the team.
I guess the question for you eck: how do you deal with having 3, top 4 LHD, and a dire need for a top 4 RHD? Staios is out here doing what he can to fix a poorly constructed team. Jensen will be a good partner for chabot, sanderson and zub were analytically one of the best D pairs in the league already. With kleven likely coming in for the last LHD spot with brannstrom gone, likely gonna need 1 more veteran, bottom pair RHD who can show him the ropes, though they also have hamonic for that(though i hope he doesnt play many games, hammer is well liked in the room and has plenty to teach a young, physical D man with a booming shot). The moves out front added more vetrans who know how to compete and add to the leadership of the group, as will ullmark, who was good even before being with boston on a bad buffalo team. I think theres genuine room for optimism here. If they can figure out how to play on the road in the western conference, this is a playoff team, and i think the moves make that a better possibility than people are giving credit for here. Now we even have a spot or two on the lineup that can be won by crookshank or ostapchuk, and a little room to sign anither vetran if need be
Fr switching Joseph chychrun and korpi for jensen, amadio, perron, and ullmark should actually help the team... adresses basically every weakness the team had.. so idk what he's on about (Adding: if you want ullmark to stay, fuck no you don't want chychrun on this team over jensen... pleaaaaaaase more actual defence)
They had chabot, sanderson, and brannstrom on the left side when they traded for him, they never should've got him to begin with. Jensen fills a role we need rhd, veteran stay at home D. Sucks to see Joseph go but their hands were tied if they wanted to keep Pinto. I think Norris would've been the better piece to trade away but since he injured his shoulder (again) he's got zero trade value and a big cap hit. All seem like good moves to me.
Staios is simply cleaning up Dorion's mistakes. He had no leverage with Chychrun, who wasn't a good fit for Ottawa. Chychrun was bad defensively with a -30 rating (+/- is a pretty useless stat, but it still says something) and didn't get along well with his teammates. Ottawa gets Nick Jensen, a veteran right-shot defenseman, which is exactly what they need.
I think the expectation in Ottawa was that the team would magically turn around just with the change in ownership. Unfortunately, there were a few landmines left by the old and care taker ownership. And there's still cleaning up to do.
*DUBAS:* Hey, Pens fans! I managed to sign Sebastian Aho! *PENS FANS:* YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! *DUBAS:* I wasn't expecting so much excitement for the Isles' defenseman! *PENS FANS:* Wait! What?! Awwwww....
Pierre Dorion spent so much draft capital chasing big shiny toys (i.e. Debrincat, Chychrun, etc.) In contrast, Staios is interested in building a competent, steady roster. As a Sens fan, I trust what Steady Steve has done thus far to clean up this team.
PLEASE make a video about Philippe Myers career!! Canadian from the maritimes going to Toronto, hes a great guy very humble. Edit: Love your channel and hope you make a video about Phil Myers career and now going to Toronto! I will show all my friends and family 😊
@@jimb.7523 True the cancer is gone at least. But we let Blake lizotte arguably the hardest working player in the nhl walk (got his $ deservedly so) and kept 37 year old Lewis who faded away after 15-20 games
You clearly don’t watch the Sens. We needed a right shot defensemen to fill the gaping whole on our right side. Secondly we have 3 left shot defensemen already so would it worth it be paying chychrun 8 million to play 3rd D pairing?
Have you ever watched Chychrun play? He's garbage defensively, and okay offensively. They are clearing cap space and needed a RHD. With Sanderson and Chabot, they have no need for a 3rd LHD. And, they would have lost him for nothing at the end of next year. The Sens had no intention of signing him to a big multi-year deal, and I guarantee anyone paying him over $6-7M will regret it. Steve is cleaning up Pierre's messes, not hard to see that. It is so obvious, yet you don't even mention it at all. What is Steve supposed to do? What moves would you recommend? I bet you also didn't like the Ullmark trade, which was a fantastic move for the Sens. Get rid of Korpi's contract (mostly!), a pick, and you get Linus for at least one year. If he doesn't resign, you are still ahead.
The Caps look great? I mean, with them being 4mil+ over the cap (not including Backstrom's LTIR money of 9.2mil) they should look good on paper... at least for now. They've got to do some major shedding of salary this off-season.
the craziest part of free agency this year is that Jeremy Swayman still hasn't signed a contract if the Bruins lose him I'm ordering a hit on Don Sweeney
So what I got from this is that you don’t watch any sens hockey. Chychrun is awful in the d-zone and not the piece Ottawa needed just another awful pro scouting job by Dorion. They got back what they could for Chychrun who’s probably gonna ask north of 7 million dollars and finally got a partner for Chabot who is hopefully also a stop gap for a guy like Yakemchuk.
Lol 😂 you must be salty we got ullmark. So far we have made great decisions to improve our major issues. Also think about it this way - we got what we needed a stay at home defenseman on the right side. Chykrun was spare parts as he is a left side puck moving defenseman (we already have two in Sanderson and Chabot). Now we have 2 legit first pairs. If you don't see this as an improvement, you obviously don't know much about hockey.
Usually enjoy your videos Eck, but I have to disagree on this one. I think Staois did the best he could and the Sens are finally making decisions that check some boxes, instead of making big splashy signings that don't fit. We've got some sick players, but we need more veterans to show them the way and provide stability. We needed a solid top 4 RHD, and realistically non of the FAs were going to sign with us unless we overpaid, so I'm ok with Jensen. I liked Joseph, but he kinda disappeared for the last half of the season with like 5 points in 30 games or something. Yeah not cool to see him shipped out for nothing and a 3rd, but I guess nobody wanted that contract. Now boom we signed Pinto and I think they have room to add a 6th, affordable defensman. Like others have said, Staois is just cleaning up after Dorian. Tired of the Sens being shit on, so hopefully they bounce back this year - LFG!!!
Half the time I feel like this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s just reading articles and leeching off of others opinions. How is he growing when he doesn’t even put in work for his job. He just comes on here to talk for three minutes about shit he heard on an article or TSN. Doesn’t even talk about Canadian teams and just says Oilers is one of his favourite for a defence.
You are grossly overrating Chychrun. He's good offensively but god awful in his own zone and also behind Chabot and Sanderson on the LD depth chart. He had to go. RD are worth more because there are less of them, so Staios (cleaning up after the mess PD made AND trying to improve the team at the same time) traded for a defense first second pair RD and made room to sign Pinto. Amadio replaces Joseph for less money, and he also fixed our goaltending. I really don't see how you can say Staios has had a bad offseason so far. It's nonsensical.
its kind of hard to believe that Eck is truly an Oilers fan. Sam Carrick was picked up by the Oilers at the deadline with Henrique and was a major depth guy/tough guy for the latter part of the year and played in 10 playoff games. Making me feel more salty for you lumping yourself in with grieving oil fans after game 7 and not knowing nuanced stuff like that.
Good thing flames fans out there got sdpn and flames nation doing depth dives on their free agents snags cuz nobody else will including eck kinda disappointing and proly why im not subscribed
You are sooo wrong about the Ottawa Senators, Senators new GM established a Goaltender and then Right Side defenseman, that was very important and Dorian was lazy, not only that he allowed Pinto to gamble, blame Dorian for the mess not the new GM,,you have it backwards, literally, the new GM knows what he is doing, he even signed Pinto right away which Dorian refused,,I trust the the new GM, he understands Cap room better than Dorian
I got to say. As a former Ottawa fan, their lack of competence even after Melnyk's death is quite astonishing. It was nice to have them here in Binghamton as their minor league team, but after they left I stopped being a fan after realizing just how poorly run of an organization they really are. Absolutely depressing that hasn't changed.
Did you see him last year? He was god awful defensively. Much prefer a vet RHD. Didn’t get enough back, but he wasn’t worth what the Sens paid for him. Staios is just cleaning up the mess of PD
