1 - 1983 World Finals - Reid Whisnant gets a rear wheel start and a massive holeshot on Frank Iaconio to take him out of the championship. Could it have possibly been a red light?
2 - 1989 Mile-High Nationals - Dick LaHaie has a power wheelstand that causes his front wheels to jump over the finish line beams in the semis. Joe Amato gets the win even though the video shows LaHaie got there first.
3 - 1994 Slick 50 Nationals - Jim Epler had some sort of electromagnetic frequency with his ignition system that seemed to cause random red lights in the opposite lane. Although some just look like they left too quick, as Jim did himself in the finals.
4 - 1994 Meguiar's Mid-South Nationals - Scott Geoffrion can't get the car to crank for the final round and they push start the car. That's not allowed so he has to back up and shut it off and get it started on its own to be able to race. (I love Kurt Johnson's commentary.)
5 - 1994 U.S. Nationals - Bob Glidden gets "timed out" at the discretion of starter Buster Couch.
6 - 1994 Sears Craftsman Nationals - John Force has an endless quest to set the national record. He has runs thrown out, runs that are too quick, and finally one to make it all come together.
7 - 1994 Chief Auto Parts Nationals - Billy Ewing and Steve Schmidt both leave before the tree and are both disqualified.
8 - 1995 Atsco Nationals - Steve Schmidt is on the line again and gets timed out, but Gordie Rivera doesn't notice it. His crew man runs up to motion him to go when he is fully staged and the run is tossed.
9 - 1997 Autolite Nationals - Eddie Hill grabs the number one qualifying position and suffers a huge crash in qualifying. The rule at that time stated that you must race the car you qualified and he could not return for round 1.
10 - 1999 Advance Auto Parts Nationals - Gary Scelzi has a chassis destroying engine and tire explosion in Friday night qualifying. He uses the Eddie Hill rule and gets out a backup car, but destroys it in Saturday qualifying. The rule only allows for one replacement chassis so they take parts and pieces and frankenstein a car together to run Sunday eliminations.
11 - 2001 Las Vegas Nationals - Bob Bode and John Force both leave before the tree is activated. John is angry and adamant the "First or Worst" rule should come into play. The NHRA changed the rule about double disqualifications after that.
12 - 2002 Northwest Nationals - Jeg Coughlin barely bumps the stage beam in the final round, which activates the Auto Start in the tree. Mark Whisnant is timed out because of it and the NHRA rules a rerun is the outcome.
13 - 2005 Mile-High Nationals - Brandon Bernstein has a single in round 1 but bangs the blower on the burnout and can not stage the car, the result is there is no winner.
14 - 2005 U.S. Nationals - Steve Johnson clearly beats Matt Smith for the win in Pro Stock Motorcycle but the NHRA overturns the timing and scoring decision 2 days later.
15 - 2006 Pontiac Performance Nationals - In round 2 of PSM Matt Smith again is the winner of a round that he crossed the finish line second. No mention of this was ever made and the results stood.
16 - 2009 Las Vegas Nationals - Pro Stock round 1, Kurt Johnson is unable to stage the car as a chunk of rubber is blocking the guard beam. The result is a rerun.
17 - 2009 O'Reilly Fall Nationals - Mike Edwards rolls close enough to the stage light to just flicker the stage light, but then the light stays on fully without him even moving. He wasn't prepared for the tree to come on and lost the round.
18 - 2010 Autolite Nationals - Brandon Huhtala has the lead in round 2 of Comp but gets on the brakes a little too hard and crashes. His run is thrown out due to excessive braking and opponent Dean Carter moves on to round 3.
19 - 2010 O'Reilly Fall Nationals - Not shown, Jason Line makes an attempt at a burnout and crosses the starting line, then backs up to try again, crossing the starting line a second time. The result is a disqualification and single for Greg Stanfield in round 2.

Iaconio lived down the block from me and Bruce Larson too both at different times but man, so cool to see a funny car and a pro stocker up close as a youngster!! Talk about a happy kid, i'd always make sure they answered the door when I collected on my paper route!!

18:00 I was at sears point that weekend with my grandfather. Fram Autolite nationals 1997. Was there the whole weekend. Eddie's crash Saturday was bad. But that entire weekend was horrible. I was hiding in the shutdown from my grandfather Friday night (smoking cigarettes) when Carrie Neil "TAD" had her fatal accident right next to me. We could (as spectators) be almost on the guardrail back then. It was crash that's sadly never been talked about. But one I'll never forget. Crazy thing to see when you're 14. Running for cover and ducking to avoid 250mph dragster shrapnel.... They closed the track that night. Gave everyone a rain check. We went back Saturday and it was like it never happened. Saw Eddie Hill crash. Thought another one had gone. Then Shelly Anderson had a blow over. Been to many many drag races. I believe I remember that weekend the most

I've seen a couple final rounds where the driver red lights. The other driver stays in it , gets loose, crosses the C/L and loses on the "worst or first" rule. In 2004, King Demon Shootout, Greg Anderson had a big performance advantage over young upstart Dave Connolly. Connolly's car was tuned by the legendary Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins but was still about .04 slower than Anderson's beast. But Connolly was deadly on the tree. The final was no exception. Anderson cut a good light but Connolly was even better. Anderson needed every inch of the 1,320 ft. to try and run him down. And he did, just barely, winning by the slimmest margin measurable, one ten thousandth of a second, .0001. Only the timer in the tower reads to 4 places. For Anderson another win and $50K. Connolly was a bit upset. Then, he was still looking for his first win and this made his third final round defeat by less than one thousandth of a second .001. If fact the margin of defeat in each added together was less than .001, something he let us know as he walked away.

I miss these days with the “Wayne County Mopar” Team & those two pro stock dodge’s were a force to be reckon with! Mopar has been ruling the drag racing scene for decades now but it’s unfortunate that they aren’t in Nascar anymore, with Mopar coming back to Nascar in 2001 it’s the only why my Mom & Dad really got into Nascar even more when Dodge made a big come back & it was even more cool that Richard Petty Motorsports went back to Dodge in 2001 which was pretty much a no brainer. But as most Dodge fans know that Dodge backed out of Nascar again at the end of the 2012 Nascar season but with that said Dodge went out on top at the end of the 2012 season winning the Nascar cup championship with #2 Brad Keselowki in his Miller Lite Dodge Charger winning the cup championship which was obviously bitter sweet, but Dodge went out on top as well as Brad Keselowski winning the Exfinity series championship in 2010 in a Dodge Challenger both for “Penske Motorsports”. The Canadian Nascar Pintys series is the only touring series to still be racing Dodge’s with the Dodge Challenger with several Dodge teams winning the Nascar Pintys Series Championship since Nascar bought out the Canadian “Cascar Super Series” in 2007. #22 Scott Steckly won 4 Championships in a Dodge & #17 Dj Kennington has won 2 championships,#27 Andrew Ranger has won a championship with his Mopar sponsored Dodge Challenger Etc. The Pintys series only run Dodge,Ford & Chevy, the way it should be imo & not how it is with all the other touring Nascar touring series running Ford,Chevy & Toyota. But back to the “Wayne County” Mopar Team & how dominant they were & NHRA picking on them because imo because they wanted Chevy & Ford to be winning & the “Wayne County” Mopar Team was accused of using nitros LoL, so I guess that means Warren Johnson & Bob Glidden must have been using nitros as well when they were dominating NHRA Pro Stock :-/ John Force must have been cheating as well with all his funny car championships, all teams push the envelope & the Grey area. I got to meet Darryl Alderman & Scott Geoffrion when they came to race at St.Thomas Dragway back in the 90’s & they made a few passes for the big “Mopar Day” car show that was going on as well that weekend.

@@FINALSTRIKE94 In the 2nd round of the 2009 US Nationals in Funny Car, John Force & Robert Hight faced off. Robert had to win in order to knock out the reigning champion Cruz Pedregon from the "Countdown". John Force threw the race with a .209 reaction time & drifted slowly towards the wall on purpose. The blatant fix was in & literally everyone knew it. Mike Dunn even called it out on the live broadcast. Tony Pedregon confronted John on the matter at the end of the track. John went on a hissy fit & for some reason tried to make everyone think Tony was complaining about Ashley Force beating him earlier in that round. There was nearly a fight but an official stopped them both. The bigger controversy was not only the fact that the NHRA did literally nothing about it; They didn't let Cruz back in, nor did they take Robert out. But the only penalty of any sort they issued was a fine against John Force for... touching an official. No seriously. And then on top of that, Robert ends up stealing a Championship he did not earn. It completely destroyed the integrity & popularity of the Funny Car division, John Force's reputation, the NHRA's reputation & legitimacy for many years & to an extent even today. And Robert Hight has been nicknamed "Robbery Heist" as a result & most fans question the validity of all his championships & most of his wins.

Boy those Dodges fly with that added nitrous. How else do you go from an also ran to untouchable in 2 years. Does anybody really think that they legitimately found that kind of power so quickly when the Glidden's and Johnson's of the world spent so much time and effort on their engine programs? Eckman had to do the same thing but he got caught. Finally, NHRA couldn't look away any longer and, right, the break in at the Wayne County Speed Shop. Palease........

The Gliddens once built a car just to show the tech officials how it was done. They drilled a hole through the motor plate as part of the delivery system.

It’s funny how we never heard anything about the investigation of the “break-in”, no one ever got caught, and no one, even the team, seemed to expect anything. It was kind of like when OJ said he was looking for the “real killers” that time.

@@johnwilburn I wonder where the lines were and the bottle. What do you mean "motor plate"?
@johnwilburn
@johnwilburn 4 года назад
Billy Glidden hid a bottle inside a weight bar that was used to make minimum weight and change weight distribution. The Wayne County guys are rumored to have hid their bottle in a fake battery and run the lines through the battery cables. The motor plate is a thin flat piece of aluminum that is used to mount the engine to the chassis in a race car. They drilled a long tiny hole through it... psychologically, that plate seems two dimensional and virtually everyone neglected that a hole could be drilled through it that direction. From there, the line went through a hood scoop support and the line was glassed into the fiberglass hood scoop. Two pinholes were above the carburetors, but up close, fiberglass has little voids and such anyway, so that wouldn’t stand out. I don’t know how the Dodge guys activated their system, if they had one, but Bob Glidden explained operating his and it took a lot of steps to arm so that it would be highly unlikely a tech inspector could accidentally activate it. I’m guessing the Orndorff/Eckman system was similar, but the only thing we know for sure about it was the bottle was hidden in the dry sump tank.

Mopar which I love was using coke in injection back then. Oh that was the drivers. Nitrous oxide!
@racer774
@racer774 5 лет назад
mitchsays1 - Alderman was using cocaine profits to help fund his lifestyle, etc. Show me where Scott Geoffrion or any other team member was even charged for possession or use of the drug. Bob and Rusty Glidden were instrumental in the team finally being caught using nitrous oxide, although it was never officially stated as such. Ironically, Wayne County Speed Shop was 'broken into" and ALL 7 of their Pro Stock engines were destroyed 1 week prior to a thorough investigation by the NHRA. Mopar was a major sponsor of the NHRA and neither wanted the embarrassment or negative press they both would have received. Both still got some but not nearly as widespread as it would have been.

@@racer774 :1st:Darrell was suspended from competition for TWO YEARS, he wasn't even ALLOWED to attend ANY NHRA major events, not allowed to drive, own, or partner ownership. 2:The NHRA found "NO" EVIDENCE of NOS on the property let alone ANY evidence of resadue on ANY engine blocks or parts after the burglary. 3:The NHRA did NUMEROUS UNANNOUNCED checks on Wayne Co. speedshop and found NO EVIDENCE OF NOS. 4:Darrell payed his dues for his cocaine use. 5:Warren Johnson accused Wayne Co of using NOS when Darrell's Daytona backfired a flame thru the scoop, NO EVIDENCE of NOS. Then Warren had the same thing happen to him, why didn't anyone cry foul and accuse HIM of using NOS? Because Government Motors was "The Major" sponsor of NHRA DRAG RACING! Just like today. ProStock isn't all brands, it's ProStock camaro now. GM finally dominates ALL of ProStock, their "Dream Come True". They got their wish pushing Dodge AND ford out of competition! Yay, go chevy, it's the ONLY WAY you'll dominate!
@racer774
@racer774 5 лет назад
Glenn Falzo - I grew up racing ONLY Mopars and motorcycles. I loved it when the Mopars in any class won. As I previously stated, the NHRA at that time had Mopar as a major sponsor. Neither of them wanted to lose the million$ of income each provided. THAT is why it wasn't publicized they used the nitrous (not NOS which is a brand name). Think what you will. Those that were in the competition circle of the class or reasonably close acquaintances to either know what happened. What, Wayne County didn't have insurance to cover their losses? Wayne County's excuse for withdrawing from competition was that they "didn't have the finances to continue after the burglary." The equipment that was trashed and left behind was a paltry sum of the parts in question. Also, nitrous doesn't leave behind "residue". The parts that were missing held the key pieces. PS. Ford withdrew from widespread sponsorship in drag racing. That's the reason John Force has Camaro Funny Cars instead of Mustang bodies. Mopar has had at least one race per year as a title sponsor. Your hatred toward GM is unfounded. Have a good one, sir.
@glennfalzo3718
@glennfalzo3718 5 лет назад
@@racer774 :Look in the past, GM sponsored MORE races them Mopar. Look at the cars that run in the Pro classes, mostly GM. ProStock is ALL GM. You talk about Wayne Co using NOS, I gave an example of WJ accusing them when the flame out of Darrell's hood scoop caused him concern, however it didn't concern anyone else when the same happened to him! As far as detecting usage, their is a test for the oil, and checking for sulfur deposits around the Pistons and heads and valve train. Wayne Co was constantly being checked with engine teardowns and they found NOTHING! Their shop was constantly having supprise checks by the NHRA, NO evidence of NOS in or around their shop!
@racer774
@racer774 5 лет назад
Glenn Falzo - You missed or disregarded everything I posted about major sponsorship concerning auto manufacturers and that nitrous oxide not being called NOS. It is technically called N2O. The name NOS stands for Nitrous Oxide Systems, a company cofounded by a man I met over 30 years ago named Mike Thermos. If you don't think medical grade nitrous oxide is obtainable by some whom aren't doctors, think again. It leaves no traceable residue and AGAIN, neither the NHRA nor Mopar wanted the negative press so they found nothing. Wayne County never returned to Pro Stock because they weren't competitive. Talk to Allen Johnson on how to create a competitive Pro Stock Dodge. He did it within NHRA rules and even won the world championship in 2012. Wayne County did not. Hence they vanished from the class. Enough said. I'm done. Take care and have a good one.
