"Shotgun" or "riding shotgun" came from the days stagecoaches needed a rider next to the team driver to ward off bandits or Indians. These gunmen often used shotguns. Today it means riding next to the driver of a vehicle. I reckon you kept the name since it is used here in 2021.
I don't know, for some reason RU-vid recommended this clip to me. Never caught such a shotgun view of the Rockies. Never been there, so this is a real education. I've never ridden in what we (at least used to) call a tractor-trailer where I come from, but have driven cars in all kinds of snow, since I live in Pennsylvania. I'm only into the first ten minutes and those tunnels out there are funny to me, bored through the edge of mountains and not through near the middle like the ones here. I recall as a kid my family took this "big trip" from the Philadelphia area to State College (home of Penn State) one Saturday morning in 1974, my first time up the Northeast Extension (of the PA Turnpike) to Route 80 (I-80). We enter the tunnel on the Extension having ridden like 40 miles in dreary rain and we exit the north end of the tunnel in what seemed a blizzard. It was the end of March when we weren't expecting snow. It seemed like the longest drive ever to reach the center of the state. Of course we had a rear-wheel-drive car ('71 Buick Skylark), and stopping for gas along 80 almost got us stuck somewhere in the mountains, cars and trucks off the side of the roads. My poor dad. But he was a patient, careful driver and that otherwise clumsy Buick made it.
Awesome ride. In 1978 , eight inches of snowy slush. I drove this rode with my mother. She asked me if we should turn around. I looked in the rear view mirror, and they were closing gates across the road. I said were are all in. Drove a saub, no problems. Just keep her moving. I was nineteen. Lol great memories.
I'm a coach driver, have been for more than 30yrs. Here in Victoria Australia, you cannot drive a heavy vehicle (coach) unless you are trained. When I did my Hazardous area training in 1989, it took 4 days. I learned how to chock the wheels, the correct way to fit then store the chains when the trip was finished I learned how to treat Hypothermia and sprains. It is a real challenge driving in the snow and I have enjoyed every bit of it. Please don't change the name of your channel it has a lot of your wild west history in it.

Lisa, unfortunately there is a shortage nationwide of truck drivers and company’s are getting desperate and hiring anybody, plus they are used to driving flat interstates get up here in vail pass and get stuck!
There are plenty of morons behind the wheels of these trucks too. It's not like you have to be a rocket scientist to drive a truck. Morons are everywhere.

I'm an Aussie and I've never seen this type of terrain or weather, but seeing it for the first time makes me think of the pioneers who tackled it with covered wagons, mules and bullocks. Many perished, but they laid the base for today's modern transport routes.

I ran these roads in all kinds good, bad, and otherwise weather for years. Retired and don’t miss this one bit, I hated it and the stress accumulating by the hour. I had flashbacks of hurrying up to get chains on in dangerous locations. Watched this then went and slugged down a few ounces of jack daniels.

I've been driving a semi for almost 30 year's. You scare me! A driver who zig zags from the right lane to the left back to the right back to the left to go faster in time this will catch up to you. And tailgating vehicles in the snow and ice is a accident in the making. Slow down driver.

I drive forty plus years out of Denver and the diver did fine. Not sure of his setup. Here we have trucks with their own sander in front of wheels. Even if not it's knowing your truck. I think when I was pulling doubles with interlock drive where all wheels have to slip or you are over the hill. Here comes yellow with dual axle tractors and spinning out. Just know your truck capabilities

11:50 "...has nothing to do with guns." Riding shotgun was all about guns actually. Back in the day, the guard for the stage coach was armed with a shotgun in case of a hold-up. This was also the reason why we drive on the right hand side of the road. With 90% of us being right handed, we sat on the left side of the vehicle so that we could use a whip on any of the horses as well as watch our wheel hubs when we passed another wagon.

BUT.. the term DID come from the old days when carriages and stagecoaches had armed guards, and the weapon of choice was the shotgun. The phrase for the guard was “riding shotgun”, and the phrase for the driver was “handling the ribbons”. Historical accuracy.

I was really impressed and had respect for the women I saw who could really drive. They made it look good. They could teach some of these throttle jockeys a thing or two! I would sometime g et the finger from OTHER TRICKERS !! ...Because I didn't have the ''hammer down'' in stupid conditions. Once in Canada, A couple of Robert trucks passed me and my co-driver in a driving snowstorm. They threw snow all up on my windshield and the cars as they passed. After a short time the traffic slowed and stopped. THOSE TWO TRUCKS had rammed a car on the shoulder and killed the occupants. It was all over the news, ...even here in America!!! I know that is true because when we finally got to the accident, we had to leave the highway. And there were two trucks and a crumpled car...and on the side of the trucks was the name ROBERT !!!!!!!!

Been living in flat Florida for 30 years watching your video I'm being drawn to the mountains. That's what brought me here typed in "driving through Rocky Mountains". Next vacation driving through the Rockies in December.
You forgot to add that most buses have auto chains. Like it's some kind of secret. That driver was probably smart enough to use them as soon as she got in the snow.

And also I learnt a bit about winter driving.. thanks. If it ever comes to pass that I win the lottery.. I’ll book a ride with Shotgun through the “Snow covered hills"(Landslide by Steve Nicks), n pay good dollars for the experience. It reminded me of my Dad; he was a UK trucker and back then a 40ft trailer was as big as it gets. When he’d get back home from the Liverpool to Scotland run he’d often have a tale to tell about the climb over the dreaded Shap fell on the A6 road, then it was the only route up north thru to Scotland, he'd often get stuck in a snow drift and have to make his way to the next nearest house n hope they’d put him up for the night. Despite him being a tough cookie, it was nevertheless n I can’t wax lyrical, an awful way for him to make a living. But I think in these times of GPS tracking systems and communications he would have hated all the paperwork and accountability involved, he just loved the driving and solitude of it all. And for sure if he was alive today I’d have brought him over, he’d also have loved a ride in your big truck (Dad's favorite truck was an Atkinson... state of the art in it's day). Cheers
Riding shotgun was originally from the days of the overland stage when some of the cargo was considered valuable. Some lines, and also private carriers, would put armed guards next to the driver. The guards usually carried double barreled 12 gauge shot guns. The gun barrels were shortened so the gun could be covered by the shooters slicker against dust and rain. They were called coach guns.
The lady school bus driver was prob equipped with hydraulic chains. They're mounted on the frame rails, left and right side, just ahead of the drive wheels. With the flip of a switch, she can engage the chains. Two hydraulic rams come dow, each with a 6 inch hard rubber and steel whell,. Each has 6 or 8 lengths of chain attached to the wheel. The wheel presses against the inside of the drive tire which causes it to spin. The spinning causes the chainsto go under the drive tires, giving her traction. She simply flips the switch back and the rams, wheel and chains retract up and out of the way.
My old stomping ground. Many times I drove that road, many times with an empty flatbed. For the most art I drove the Denver / LA route. Usually with a 3 day turnaround because my company rules were no governed speed, just the RPM and you can run the speed limit, which was handy for 2 times a month I had to take pallets from Cheyenne to King City CA. One night I was the last vehicle thru Vail, as they shut the road behind me. I had a Colorado State Trooper behind me to check for people stuck. I threw a chain about 4 miles to the summit. I asked him laughingly, if I needed to put another chain on. His asked if I could keep going, and I said I could. He told me to get all the way to Denver if I could. I did. We used to chain up the axle that wasn't full time so we could engage it when we needed it, and could drop or out to use the Jakes, and not have all the drives slip. I never did it when the snow was bad. I spent 12 hours on the Western grade of the Eisenhower EB, in my van due to snow. If you live there it's just normal. Most of the school buses and ambulances that go up there have auto chains. They are hard to see if they aren't being used. You don't have to have them down, but of you block the road, you get fined. Every time I get to missing Colorado, and driving, all I have to do is watch videos like these. That takes care of it. Smiles!

I am a Coloradoan, and I agree with you whole-heartedly... the storm and road is seldom the issue, it is the other drivers that get you stuck or stranded. I have a little Kia Rio. With good tires and smart driving I can go pretty much anywhere as long as the other drivers aren't going too slow or too fast...

If they don't like your name they don't have to watch. A lot of people don't know what riding Shotgun means, they just see the word shotgun and think it's wrong. I used the term as a kid growing up so I could get the front seat.

Hello from the future: My son in law drives T-T and works for a great company. They do not force him to drive in in-climate weather. Besides, you never know what's happening on the road from one minute to another. Just like you he is a safe driver. He always sends pictures of rigs "SLEEPING" on the job ( laid over on their sides ) because they are knuckle heads. Thanks for what you do to keep the country functioning! That's not all, a savvy Police Officer (Constable, in your country?) in events like this one, could rack up North of $50,000.00 USD in Citations Revenue for his county or state, for just one blizzard that lasts for just 24 hours. I appreciate riding along with all of your virtual video truck rides........I especially enjoy those driving routes that you take your viewers on because I too have driven on those same routes and enjoyed seeing the beauty in the scenery......keep doing these videos because traveling on America’s highways and byways truly is freedom......oh!!!!! and by the way, Google!!!! I've lived in Colorado for 45 years so I've driven the roads in all kinds of weather. It's getting bad though nowadays. Way too many people who don't know how to drive.

Way too many people in Colorado that are drugged out of their heads, materialistic beyond belief, and superficial. We're in Wyoming and hate to have to drive to Colorado.
It has been a very long time since I traveled this road (east or west). The tunnels were always fun and I enjoyed the river, too. Glad you are doing the driving today since the snow would have been too heavy for my little car. Looks a lot different from the interior of your rig. I like being able to see what is happening up ahead but still makes me tense up just sitting in my home watching this.
The name of your channel is perfect Mike and if they dont like it, let them watch something else cuz renaming your channel still wont make them feel any better cuz there are some folks who love to find something to whine about......they will Never be happy cuz they like bitching!
Riding "shotgun" is perfect name ...passenger seat next to the driver of the stagecoach...the driver kept his eye on the road the passenger kept alert checking all the scenary.... "look out" for the ambush.
