I like how Todd's relationship with bojack NEVER went back to the way it was after the rock opera incident. It's small and subtle but theres always that hint of lingering resentment, and acknowledgement of the toxicity that bojack represents. It really is an arm's length friendship where one character wants the other to be better and fix their problems but is wise enough to not go down with the ship when they fail to do so. I really do love this show.

in general, I just loved in how different ways we have bojacks relationships ending. hollyhock cuts goes full no contact, diane moves on both understanding that their relationship is hurting them while at the end holding onto the comfort and closeness of one another, the one with Tod was healed yet never returned as it was with time and effort by bojack and at least there's princess carolyn which comes with both boundaries and their own personal growth and all of it is open ended yet satisfying

@@Hahaa99 I COMPLETELY forgot about that! But yeah that's exactly what it is. That acknowledgment of it being okay to let people go as to not be bogged down by their self destruction. I know this show is loved by many but it's still a masterpiece that deserves more attention.

@@fish3977 Right?! People end up responding to the end of that long road to semi- redemption as people, rather than characters. Some of them cut him off completely because they know hes bad for them and some stick around with cautious optimism that he can overcome the demons that he struggles with, but no one is portrayed as wrong. It manahes to simultaneously preach a message of redemption and hope while saying it's okay to save yourself from people who fail to change.

It makes me hopeful about Todd and Bojack's friendship, actually! And it actually goes much further: It starts with just Bojack's footprints. Todd is being carried along. It takes a struggle and a great fall from Bojack's shoulders for Todd to land on his two feet. From there on out, their paths diverge, Bojack running further and further ahead (away). Todd catches up though, with big, confident leaps. And with a Hokey Pokey, Todd turns their paths around, spinning into both of their footprints until you can't tell which ones are the ones coming in, and which ones are the ones heading out. They're in the same place and in the same mess, with Todd adjacent to Bojack; considerably even ahead of him, if you look at it a certain way. A wave comes in and washes all previous footpaths away. None of it, not even your past, really matters, does it?

When BoJack says, "What if I relapse again?" and Todd replies, "Then you'll get sober again," the water starts to get closer, and by the end of the scene the water wipes away completely the footsteps they left on the beach. When all the footsteps do go, they both agree that it was "nice while it lasted." The footsteps are metaphoric of Bojack's worry; he might just relapse again, but if he does, and all his progress is wiped away-his footsteps on the long, arduous journey of sobriety-then he just starts again.

I agree with the sentiment, but I also think it's kind of backwards. To me, this scene is the strongest, purest, most real example of their friendship in the entire show. Bojack seemingly DESPISED Todd when they first lived together, and Todd was totally dependant on Bojack to keep a roof over his head. Their relationship never goes back, and thats a brilliant thing because Bojack learns to care for others and Todd learns to care for himself

Todd's understanding of the Hoki Poki is what is called "The Death of the Author". Basically, Todd believes that the initial meaning of the art doesn't actually matter. What matters is what the viewer gets from it. This is a quite controversial idea in art. It basically says that creators have no ownership over what anything in their work means.

Look at the paintings from Da Vinci, or the movies from Kubrik Most long lasting art outlast their creator. When it is done, what viewpoint can they bring on it ? All that remains is the art itself and what people get from it.
@therealtonydutch
@therealtonydutch 3 года назад
It's not that controversial. I subscribe to the idea of the death of the author and I attempt to create my art that way. It's free to interpret or whatever anyone wants to do with it. What I think or how I feel about it doesn't matter anymore the moment I release my work into the world. It sort of becomes of everyone. Furthermore that's how abstract art really comes into it's own, when the artist no longer "owns" it. If artists are willing to sell their work, they are willing to part with what is theirs. It's literally like selling your babies. So I generally would prefer to share my art for free, or maybe trade it for anything but money. I don't think I want people to make money off of it.

@maleazarkevich6635
@maleazarkevich6635 3 года назад
I wouldn't say they have no ownership though. I think it would be more correct to say they have less control about the interpretation their work may get. As an author, writter or whatever, you might get a message across. A feeling, an idea, a situation. But you must know that people may interpret it in a completely different way than you intended. They have had other experiences and other beliefs that may affect the way they see what you have created. And that's the magical thing about art: no one will get the same out of it.

I love how after Bojack told Todd about how he's not doing big improvements but is "staying out of trouble at least", Todd still is happy for him, saying "Hooray! Staying out of trouble at least!" This is important to me because it shows that when you suffer from things like depression, PTSD, anxiety, take your pick, it's hard to make big improvements and recovery is long and hard, but just being able to do little things, like get out of bed in the morning, fix a good breakfast, taking a shower can be seen as an accomplishment, because at least you got something done, and that's important in the process of healing. Even little things like "staying out of trouble at least" can be an outstanding achievement.

Or maybe art doesn't need a point, maybe that's why is called «Art»" The word "art" is the ancient form of "are" Example: Art thou / are you *_It's Art because it IS_* Or that's what I got from Todd's strange phrasing, it's the only interpretation I could came across and I don't know if it's intended, but isn't Art what you get out of it?

I relapsed and it nearly cost me everything...... it hurts me to the core when bojack talks about how he fears he could slip up again, I fear I could slip up again....but when Todd tells him that he will “get sober again” and that “everyday he will set a new record for being sobor”.... well I know it’s a show and it’s a convo between two established characters with their own context....but somewhere deep down it feels like he talking to me....and when am scared I be nothing more then a drugged out failure, I watch this little clip.....and I don’t feel quite as scared anymore..... KazimierzStaszewski Lol you done got me started lol... TL;DR: Don’t like death theories. Kinda don’t agree. It’s too easy, almost like saying it was all a dream, if that’s the case everything in the show becomes meaningless because the motif of learning to deal with all the slings and arrows of negative life experiences in attempts to make a positive change falls apart because BoJack gets an out in his lifestyle with no repercussion and that’s a poor takeaway. Literally could be interpreted as you find peace from your mental issues and shitty behaviors in death, which no That robs Todd’s words of their poignancy: You do the hokey pokey If you can’t even turn yourself around then that’s like the antithesis of what the show is about. ahem. ...hokey pokey... Also... if THIS is how BoJack internalizes death, what’s the point of episode like the View from Halfway Down, or Stupid Piece of Shit, or the entirety of the Philbert arc, or the bender he, Todd, and Sarah Lynn went on? BoJack inertializes his actions in grandiose ways. Constantly looking deeper into things sussing out what motive and character actually means. All in all, BoJack needs to confront the fallout of the things he’s done, learn from it, and move forward. His biggest problem is that he doesn’t quit while he’s ahead nor does he remove himself from situations that are clearly going south. He actually seems like he’d be quite the phenomenal director. Maybe that’s his turnaround, who knows?

"What changed?" "Idk, I did, or she did? Or we ARE" I love this line.

Bojack did horrible things, he hurt people in a way that is probably unforgivable. But he keeps on living, people, even those that hurt others keep on living, and as they keep on living, they still need people around them. It's normal and justifiable that some people pushed Bojack away from their lives after what he did, but it's also normal that some will allow him to still be a small part of their lives. Not because they forgive what he did, but because they know that he is still a person, that can try and be better, and needs people around him to make himself better. I am so happy that in some way Todd is still one of those people, Bojack does not deserve him, but he still needs him. This show changed a lot about how I feel about redemption and forgiveness.
