the use of the word “fuck” was used to symbolise the end of one of bojacks relationships. It was never said in an episode unless bojack ruined a relationship. The writers of this show were actual geniuses

honey sugarman's "why, i have half a mind" gives me chills when you realize it's almost literal

I always love the ending of when Bojack is telling his mum that they’re at the lake house. The resignation in her face as she’s trying to think about how ice cream tastes, because she’s never tasted ice cream.

"I'm so tired of squinting..." Gets me... every single time.

I really liked the "My mother is dead and everything is worse now" line. hits hard

when bojack didn’t get to see secretariat’s answer to his letter it BROKE my heart. it made me wonder what could have happened if he heard his hero give him positive reinforcement.

The "sarah lynn?" line will always send goosebumps down my spine and devastate me, his facade of a calm demeanor to comfort Sarah Lynn in the start before you can here the fear in his voice is truly a masterpiece in the field of character work and acting

I think one of the saddest / hardest things about the show is the ending. Final episode. Princess Carolyn is finally married and has a kid. Todd is moving on with his life, and so is Diane. Every character is continuing on with their life, and Bojack, he’s stuck with the knowledge of everything that’s happened in the past. Sarah Lynn, his mom, and all the others are dead. The worst part is that he has to find a way to keep going with everything and everyone moving on.

I am not kidding when I say that this show has made me a better person. I recognized so many of my own behavior patterns in Bojack that it actually motivated me to go out and get therapy rather than letting myself become him.

"You were born broken" That line hits so hard. Bojack didn't be asked to be born into this life and I'm glad that his mother recognized and apologized for that.

i was really expecting charlotte’s “and if you ever contact me or my family every again, i will fu*king kill you." the voice acting on that scene made me pause the episode and take a moment. hurts when you really want to support the guy but he can't stop fucking up.

it took me about 3 watches to fully realise that herb was in deep ass love with bojack

I read in the comments that when Bojack asks his mom if she can “taste the icecream” she has this, moment of sadness and disappointment BECAUSE she knows that she has never tasted icecream before. And I watched the scene again, and it was like a completely different moment. Her eyes dart around the room, not out of uncertainty, but out of absolute clarity. Beatrice knows she’s never tasted icecream and realizes she’s not in Michigan. In that moment, the beauty of the place that Bojack so tenderly described seeps away, she changes her manner and her eyes don’t look so lost and confused. Initially she pauses when she thinks about it; the flavor of icecream, and she sighs, and the feigned comfort and warmth is just drained out of her. But she says, it’s delicious, maybe for Bojack, in a moment of reciprocal kindness, or maybe because she wished that she knew what vanilla icecream tasted like. Something so simple, a cheap accessible novelty she could have had this whole time if she wanted to. But she never did. Truly a tribute to how she never found peace or happiness. Her face at the end, is this, false smile. Forced upon her, her tone of voice returns to its former glory of mechanical and detached. “It’s …. delicious” she assumes. Humoring her son in a moment of harrowing tragedy. These artists, the team that made this series… You can’t tell this story without knowing. You can’t write this without feeling Bojacks hurt. You can’t animate the nuances of a scene like this without having experienced hate and pain and disappointment toward a loved one. Lots of people carry these burdens. Lots of people find self awareness and community in Bojacks suffering. In the most absurd abstract way, this production team has touched my heart in a way I never thought an alcoholic horse would. Thank you for making this video. I’d forgotten how much this series moved me since my last watching.

Hearing Todd say 'Fuck man... what else is there to say?' in such a downer voice... it's simultaneously so character breaking and yet, so in-line and one of his best moments. After that rant, the 'reason why you suck' speech... what else is there to say? You can't simply recover from that and go about your happy day.

Every F-bomb dropped nearing each season's finale was a gut punch. Fantastic execution.

The recurring theme here should be that Bojack being aware of how much of an asshole he is does not make him a better person. People think that just because they're aware of their depression, just because they know they do shitty things, makes it almost ok because they know they need to be better. But they don't actually get better, they just repeat the cycle of do shitty thing, feel bad about yourself, give an empty apology to the people you hurt and do it all over again. You want to be happy, to find love in friends and family? Act like a better person. Shit, some people just fake happiness until they actually start to believe they're happy. It works. But you have to try.

Currently rewatching & it’s crazy how some people are saying “he should’ve had a child & maybe could’ve gotten another chance at life” & look how he let down Sarahlynn. She basically was his child

The View From Halfway Down poem still gives me nightmares

I never understood that quote until now. It hurts knowing that everyone has a different version of you in their heads.. They love you, but they don’t like you or accept you. That IS the loneliest feeling in the world

Secretariat said that he should never look back, and that's exactly what Bojack did, he forgot about all the people he hurt, all the mistakes, all those horrible things he did. He tried to change but he didn't want to face the consequences, so he kept running away from them.

I love how Secretariat’s response to Bojack’s question initially sounds good by saying “You might stumble in your journey but don’t quit and keep going. You only fail if you give up”. But when you *really* listen, he’s actually saying *”Run away from your problems, don’t ever look back at them & try to understand what went wrong, and anyone who challenges your poor behaviour is just out to get you”* and giving Bojack the worst possible advice which they both unfortunately took to hear.

It says something that the most realistic depiction of depression in media is a surreal cartoon about a sad anthropomorphic horse. I don't know what it says, but it says something.

The last scene always gets me. Bojack still looks at Diane while she just keeps looking onward

It makes me sad because I truly wanted Bojack to get his development and be a better person. I think Todd telling him that he’s all the things wrong himself and Beatrice telling him he was born broken reinforced an idea throughout the show that Bojack is bad but it’s not just his actions it’s him. I don’t think Bojack ever changed because he never really believed he was able to.

By series end, everyone Bojack ever cared about had moved on, either through cutting him off or through death. Bojack thought Sarah Lynn was the only one who understood him, and she ended up paying with her life for it. The only person who wanted to keep through thick and thin was Mr. Peanutbutter, someone Bojack was never once interested in being close with. Bojack lost every connection he ever wanted to make.

fuck man. recently started a rewatch and you hit me with a compilation of all the reasons this show hits me so hard. never expected a cartoon horse to speak so deeply to me, more than any kind of therapy.

It's so sad how much Bojack loved his mother but she could never love him the way he needed.

The View From Halfway Down poem will never not give me chills. The sheer panic in his voice as he seems to be feeling the same emotions as he reads the poem, and Herb's sinister reassurance... It's such a standout scene in an already standout episode.

I love this show for the character development. Not only for Bojack but all the other characters like Mr. Peanut butter, Princess Carolyn, Diane, etc. It really shows how generational trauma can effect not only you but everyone around you. Hes actually trying to change but falls short every time.

i think the darkest line is when Sarah Lynn says “i wanna be a architect” bc she talks about this dream from the first episode we see her in, and it just sucks that she never had the opportunity to pursue such a thing

"Am I doomed to be the person that I am ?" This one always leaves me blankly staring for a while.

This show is pure gold.. And the worst part of it is.. Most people don't even give it a chance... Is completely funny, creative, and depressing in the same time.. One minute I'm laughing losing myself.. And in the next second im there thinking "s*** this got real really quickly" and I don't have depression or suicidal tendencies or nothing like that.. But this show helped me understand how they see the world.. And it's something Im really sure most people should learn how to do

As brutal as the show and these scenes are, it's also so incredibly hopeful. Every dark scene conveys a good message afterwards. Yeah, life is a bitch. And you keep on living.

Every time the moment when beatrice realizes it’s bojack and she repeatedly asks, “where am I, Bojack?” I shed tears. The fear of losing memory breaks my heart and for the show to take my fear and worsen it with Beatrice regaining some of her memory at the worst possible moment? Goddamn. This show is phenomenal.

The monkey that says it gets easier but you have to do it everyday... When they flashback to 2007, he was doing the same run, but he had a woman running with him. The assumption was that was his wife and she passed away. So, his words can have so many different interpretations

when i first started watching bojack i expected ‘the sad horse show’ and self-sabotaging funny cartoon animals. this show really broke me and saved my life at the same time. the whole thing and the view from halfway down and diane and beatrice and just every single thing - this show has definitively changed me.

I love that scene when Todd gets real with Bojack. He was goofy and funny in the earlier seasons so when he gets serious, I felt that in my soul. Life has a way of changing us all, and so does death. 😢😭

I really hate how people don't give it a chance to masterpieces like this show because it's animated or a cartoon and therefore 'they can't be serious or good' As an animator it's really frustrating

"All that matters, is this spectacular moment *we* are *sharing together* , right Sarah Lynn? Sarah Lynn?...Sarah Lynn..?" even in this moment, he was alone. He has always been alone, no one has ever been by his side, they have always left, even if they didn't get the chance to walk away from it alive. EDIT: Bojack is NEVER the victim in his adult life, he made that choice to let her die, this was just my observation.

everyone is saying bojack is the most real depiction of depression, like, no. no it isnt. it's the most real depiction of someone with a personality disorder who never got help, refuses to get help and constantly excuses themselves from the harm they cause others because he feews bad. he just happens to also have depression because mental illnesses most commonly come in packs of "Find one get five free.". saying he's depressed and leaving it as that, is downplaying his actions and the harm they have on other people, it downplays what people in real life like him do. people with "just" depression dont take their anger out on others in abusive ways and sabatoge their friends happiness and future because they're emotionally constipated and dont know how to handle a rejection they made up in their own heads because of a complex they developed as a child. Bojack isnt a saviour representation, he's not a depiction to make you feel less alone in your depression, and make you feel seen while ignoring every other symptom that points to something else, he's a warning. He's what you and i will become if we dont keep ourselves checked. the people he hurts are stand ins for the people we know and deserve better than what he and possibly we the audience has given them depending on who we LET ourselves be. not what others has done to us as kids, not because of what our brains do during depression. if you feel like shit, you cant get out of bed, you cant enjoy things you know you would have, that's fine and valid but dont mistake that as an excuse to act like him, because that;'s what he did and look where it got him and who that hurt and who that killed. it's a matter of choice. It was nice while it lasted

This show has really helped me through so much. Especially the quotes like “everyone loves you but not everyone likes you” it just really gives you a true perspective on life especially when you’re feeling like sh*t or going through a tough time.

The part where Secretariat reads the poem about suicide and Herb tells him to find his peace just gives me chills especially when Herb explains to Bojack about how he's stuck in a dream as a way to cope with the fact that he's dead.

I stg I don’t know where I would be without this show

I want to point out that Bojack, throughout the whole show, is trying to be better by resorting to other people or distractions that might make things better, but he rarely ever tried to do things differently to a more serious degree. If you want to be happier and live better, in the words of Todd "You need to be better". Not just realising your flaws, but acting upon them and making a serious change in your life. This show really hits you in the gut with how real it gets.

"When you look at someone through rose colored glasses all the red flags just look like flags". That really cut deep for me. When we care for someone that isn't good for us we trend to just overlook that the person we care for either doesn't care about us or they are damaging you and that's rough.

Something about when his mom finally notices him and he starts to comfort her by talking about The Old Sugarman Home really gets me.

The penultimate episode still brings a tear to my eye, even after a rewatch. "The View from Halfway Down!" is one of the best examples of tragedy and remorse done right.

When the door appears behind him at 19:06, it never fails to send chills down my spine. Sheesh, the dark abyss behind him pretty much represents what death is like.. its nothing. Out of all the scary scenes I’ve encountered, this is probably one of the most terrifying :(

IMO the most chilling moments are: “Bojack, this is when your life begins” **cut to Bojack staring at the tv at his rock bottom** and “how was your day” “good… my day was good.”

When Bojack begs Diane to tell him he's good, and she freezes - I realized then that I was watching a very different show. That caught me so completely off guard. I've watched the series probably 5-6 times now, and Sara Lynn, Ruthie, Time's Arrow, and the second to last episode still completely destroy me.

A little thing I haven't seen noticed about Todd's confrontation with BoJack that I think is neat is that when the scene begins the camera angle is focused on the front door and the general clutter. But once the conversation focuses more on BoJack's personal faults, Todd walks to the back of the house and the camera focuses on the "Hollywoo" sign and the car in the pool; both bad things BoJack personally did drunk out of his mind. I thought it was a neat touch.

This show has the absolute best writing of any show on television.

I’d like to think I’m a happy person but watching this show and re-watching it’s intense dialogue broke me and honestly resonated in a way I’ve never thought possible. Even though I enjoy people and keep going on this show really opened my eyes to certain aspects in my own life that weren’t healthy or good. That’s why I’m so resentful of seeing the show again all the way through-I don’t want to relate to it more and by doing so becoming more sad. Even though I know it hits deep and has good powerful messages.

I believe that times arrow, the view from halfway down and free churro are all top ten episodes in adult cartoon history. The view from halfway down is definitely number 1 to me

Man, Bojack's last moment with his mother and that poem about suicide always get me, no matter how many times I see it. The writing for this show was so phenomenal.

7:48 i just realised Diane asking this was thinking about suicide, because she secretly was in depression the whole time. Thats why she looked sad and concerned when she heard that disappearing is good even if you hurt a lot of people. She was struggling with suicidial toughts and Whiskers just gave argument for it.
