In this video I show you a guide on the NICEIC technical assessment and tips and hacks on preparation.
If you become a NICEIC domestic installer or approved contractor, you will undergo an inspection by the NICEIC where an area engineer visits your head office or home.
Being fully prepared for your assessment is the key.
By being organised, helps the area engineer in performing their task more efficiently.
This means you can ask your own questions about technical standards, industry best practice and advice on how the NICEIC can support you in your business.
General advice about how to prepare for your assessment:
Office premises - usually the Area Engineer will need to see your office, whether this is within your home or a seaparate business address.
Office procedures and paperwork - usually checked whilst at your office. Ensure that all relevant policies, procedures and insurances are documented and readily available to show the Area Engineer.
Installation records - including installation certificates raised against completed work including building regulations notifications (where applicable).
Technical qualifications - of the nominated Qualified Supervisor are also checked as part of the office assessment.
Technical reference documents - ensure these are up to date and readily available for access.
Test instruments and leads - ensure that these have up to date service records, accuracy logs and are available on the day of assessment for use.
On site work - ensure that there is suitable work for the Area Engineer to inspect. This includes checking that access on the required day is possible.

Bladey ell mate I’m a plasterer I was considering becoming an electrician but all these exams are insane. Costs over £10 grand to get the C&G 1/2/3levs and other certs. As a plasterer all i ever needed was a cscs card and that cost me £100 and was over in a few days lol. Nice and easy mate no headache lol and I make £160 a day 7 hours work (1 hour break). Not bad money for a job you don’t have to give a sh!t about. Respect to you guys it’s so much effort being an electrician. Not for everyone

Great video Dan, I've just started out as a domestic installer and looking to become NICEIC approved. My concern is that the work I do is mainly minor works, additions and alterations etc. Nothing notifiable yet, would the assessor expect to see evidence that you've carried out notifiable work i.e. CU installs, rewires etc?
@DanstheEngineer

Jake Chattey I can't speak on behalf of the NICEIC but check out this link below. Click on a scroll box to scheme requirements and you can download a PDF for the scheme. By the looks of it providing you carry out electrical installations, have an H&S policy, insurance, complaints procedure, safe isolation procedure and few other bits I can't see a problem with you applying www.niceic.com/join-us/approved-contractor-scheme

Example I just completed a months training for city and guilds domestic installer including 18th edition. Contacted niceic they asked have you worked in the industry for 2 years I said no (honest answer) then you cannot join for 2 years. I asked where it said this on there website? Buried on page 12 of brochure. But when you click on there join us link on the site it says quite boldly join us within 3 weeks. No mention of 2 years experience. I rephoned and said I have 2 years experience (no evidence requested) was told I could arrange an assesment immediately no mention of 2 years experience required. When they discovered it was me call was diverted to a higher up who then refused to proceed. When I asked what 2 years experience was they could not tell me. When I pushed them it could be as simple as 4 items of work done over the 2 years. Judge for yourself. Is that rectum protectum. Or raising the standards In The industry?

Hi Dan, How does this work for a new applicant given NICEIC notifiable work cannot be done unless someone is NICEIC registered? So how can you show the inspector notifiable work if you are a new applicant?
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 3 года назад
It is actually the home owners responsibility to ensure the work is notified but I recommend you can either do a job and have it certified and notified by another contractor. Obviously ensure the trust is there. Or do a notifiable job prior to your assessment and notify once you have accreditation.

Great video Dan, I intend to go self-employed this year and will inevitably be joining the NICEIC's Domestic Installer Scheme for convenience of Part P notifiable work to Building Control. One question though, is there any specific qualifications I need, in order to be considered a QS or Principle Duty Holder as I will be a sole trader?
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 6 лет назад
Alvin Ashman good question. I'll link the section of their website below and there is a PDF at the bottom which you can download. It doesn't specifically state any qualifications at all. Just requires you to be working in the industry, have the technical documents and a couple of that procedures in place. The assessment assess if you are capable or not. What qualifications do you have? www.niceic.com/join-us/part-p-domestic-installer-scheme

Dans the Engineer- I'm a JIB Approved Electrician with all the relevant qualifications to suit. I've been an electrician for the past 15 years predominantly working within the domestic social housing sector. I've grown a bit tired of working for someone else and feel that I could make a success of going it alone. Have you ever been self-employed and if so, how did yoy find it, any of your experience or advice would be greatly appreciated.
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 6 лет назад
Alvin Ashman you'll have absolutely no problem qualification wise! Being a JIB approved electrician certainly demonstrates your qualifications. Just make sure you have a copy of the relevant standards. Part P and the EAWR 1989 are free to download. Ensure you read up on technical knowledge etc and I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine.

Hi Dan, im in france working as a spark been here for 7 years but coming back next year. Chicken and the egg ?? how do you get the notifiable jobs / work done for your inspection day if you cant sign off work prior before your registration with a scheme thanks Lee
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 4 года назад
Hi mate. You can carry out non-notifable works or work that is notifiable but communicate adequately with the client that it is their responsibility and cost. Obviously that might not always go down well with the client.
@leeburnside735
@leeburnside735 4 года назад
@@DanstheEngineer so you would still issue a certificate but put in writing in a quote or estimate that they have to notify building control them self within 20 days and if they dont ?? its on there head
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 4 года назад
@@leeburnside735 technically mate its the building owners responsibility to ensure the works are notified. Not the electrician. We do it becsuse we have the means to plus it costs us a couple of quid whereas some councils will charge a fair bit for an inspection for compliance. If you were to mention this to a client they are likely to not have a clue what are you talking about and it could look unprofessional.
@popsquashgaming9463
@popsquashgaming9463 3 года назад
To my understanding the NICEIC is who's software generated the certificate or authorised it. If you're not registered with the NICEIC how do you signed off your work?🤔 assessment not legally allowed to sign off work, how does that work?.
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 3 года назад
If you are registered with the NICEIC, they have a portal to register notifiable works. This is not the electrical certification, it is separate and you reference the certificate number. So if you want to use different software, you can. I do. I don't like the NICEIC online software. If you're not registered with the NICEIC there are other bodies who do the same or you register through the local building control but it can be costly and a ball ache.

Hi Dan, I was in two minds weather to go NICEIC or NAPIT. I've read a few horror stories about insurance and mortgage companies only dealing with NICEIC contractors so have reluctantly decided to go NICEIC Approved Contractor. How has your experience been with the NICEIC?
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 6 лет назад
Hi Alvin. I have been an approved contractor with the NICEIC for almost 10 years. I can't say I have any complaints. They come out once a year for the assessment which goes well. We discuss technical things and a lot about testing. He's a really nice bloke so that helps. There are probably lots of benefits that you can get by being with them, but I don't use any. Why was you reluctant?
@alvinashman6371
@alvinashman6371 6 лет назад
Other electricians have said that they don't really care about their contractors, they're only interested in taking their money year on end and some of the assessor can be quite anal. The guys that are registered with NAPIT seem to have had a better experience, very helpful technical support. Some have had to leave NAPIT to join NICEIC and say they preferred NAPIT.
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 6 лет назад
I can't speak about other competent person schemes because I haven't been with them but I do like Napit's Tech team. The NICEIC scheme works for me. In regards to looking for tech support I tend to look for my own sources anyway. My old NICEIC assessor was incredibly knowledgeable and really tested me. He would even throw a few curve ball questions whilst we are driving from site to site but I really enjoy that sort of thing because it is making sure I am up to scratch which is only a good thing.
