This is a very complicated and intense song with a difficult drum part and he nailed it. Not a moment of rest here. Those sticks are flying for the full 6 minutes. Hard on the body but he looks like he's up for the job. Solid body and I like how he sings along with the song while playing. Great to see. I can see why Phil is so proud of him. Best of luck, Nic.
Not taking away his performance here but this is a rather easy rhythm for an accomplished drummer. That said, he did a great job but I personally wouldn't compare him to Chester Thompson. That guy is a very versatile and talented musician. You need to watch a full concert to really appreciate how good he really is; his dynamics, feel, timing, and precision bring him into elite status.
@@jonn443 agreed, Chester is a different league to Nick......... but give it time. I hope I'm still alive in 20 years to see Nick doing everything his dad did. But I doubt I'll live that long. God bless Nick, go do it all and enjoy peace, love and bloody good music!!!
Tony banks would never had this boy on tour with Genesis unless is excepcional, and he is. Prove of that is the incredible progress he has made in the last 3 years. Great and humble drummer
I was at this concert and the moment Phil turned around to watch his son’s drum solo I cried. Phil passed on his amazing talent to this young man, and watching him watch his son was the most emotional moment I’ve ever had in my entire life. I could physically feel how proud he is of his son and the love he has for him. Phil will forever be my favorite artist, but his love for his son definitely passed to me that night, and I can’t think of a better way to carry on his legacy. Thank you both for all of your incredible talent. You are both in my heart. ❤️
You knew Nic was going to be amazing in this concert from the very beginning from Against All Odds when his silhouette lit up from the first hit of the drum.
Why people gotta hate. This is an amazing video of some amazing drum playing by the son of an amazing drummer. Nic played it perfectly as the version that has been played even by CHESTER since at least 2004. Those who want to bitch about the video quality, lets see how well you do with a phone cam zoomed to max. Even your breathing will move the video. Quit hating so much, everything about this is awesome!
I agree, it was zoomed to the max which is why it's very shaky. I think you can probably even see my pulse there. I also think no matter what, some people won't like him because they think he's only there because he's Phil's son (& therefore not talented), or they have such a loyalty to Chester, no-one else would be good enough. I agree there is a jealousy factor as well which is a shame. Thanks Akira for being so positive, it's very much appreciated.
I hope he realizes just how blessed he is not only being Phil Collins son but also the drummer for his Dad. I dont know why people are so surprised by how good he can play!! When you're being taught by one of the worlds top drummers from the day you're born I'm gonna bet he's better than good!!
I saw an interview with Nick where he said that he hasn’t really gotten much instruction from his dad. Phil believes Nick should be his own drummer, which is pretty remarkable-
The two Collins boys did an interview and it’s here on RU-vid somewhere, and it turns out that he likes two of his dad’s songs. Lol. I suspect playing on tour will change all that, and that he’ll love them all! :-) I can’t help but wonder if people got into the pop music business with the guidance of a parent or other mentor who loved them, perhaps it would be less destructive to the musicians personally in terms of lifestyle issues they develop overtime. I mean, how many concerts have you gone to when the musicians were so stoned they were barely under bodies? This guy is just about at that age where he’d be vulnerable to the big partying lifestyle that most young musicians go through in the situation of being away from home on tour, but look at him: he looks present, his mind is in the game, and he appears to be enjoying the gig. Whatever he chooses to do with the rest of his life, if he chooses to stay in the music business, he has a reasonably good chance of enjoying it for the entirety of his life, without having to worry about whether or not he can keep his mental health and relationships together.
Imagine spending 90% of your time on the toms like this - and having to get to those crashes right on time, every time - with the tom rhythms constantly shifting and becoming more complex - then in the second half of the song the cymbal crashes move 180% to be right IN THE MIDDLE of the tom patterns. That's how hard this part is, and Nic nailed it.
This is so good it makes a grown man cry. I grew up on Phil and Genesis and this talented young man will carry the torch for the next 50 years. Great playing Nick.
I'm a grown-ass woman and still my tears are dripping, much respect absolutely Beyond Talent. Kudos makes people's day a little bit brighter. Again not to be redundant simply Fabulous flawless
I love that whenever you watch him play he is singing along. It might just be how he keeps his place but, I like to think he truly loves Phil’s songs. He has very natural technique. He is relaxed and confident in his playing. At 18 and now 20 years old that shows how much talent he has. He’s on a stage in front of thousands playing songs the audience knows by heart in the shadow of the legend himself. Way to go Phil raising Nick and way to go Nick putting in the practice and dedication to do your father proud.
I do love that. Saw this concert twice and The Last Domino? and he's constantly doing it. Shows how much he really enjoys his dad's music. I mean you don't sing along to songs you don't like right?
I took this video because there didn't seem to be any others like it (at the time). I'm so glad I did because he surpassed my expectations of how good he really is. Glad you're enjoying it!
Got my first kit in 1973, been playing all my life. At one time I would count the beats per measure while playing. Somewhere along this path I started singing while I played live and I still use this method of keeping correct time, except when I am forced to play with a click track. It’s Nic’s method of knowing and being triggered to respond imo.
And I cried throughout in the air tonight when Nicolas played it. Because that was the official family's passing of the torch. 😢😢😢. Nicholas also has his own band started up now? It's called 5800. And there recording new music too? Lol
How the fuck is this possible? Putting fathers groove to new level. I thought there will be never again someone like Jeff Porcaro and Phill Collins, drummers with heaven gift to play with heart and soul, groove masters. But this kid !
Ive said for years if i had to pick 1 drummer it would be Phil Collins. Nic is here to carry on his legacy. Its in his blood. A fine drummer in his own right. God bless you all 🙏🙏🙏
Just come back from the Last Domino concert in Liverpool. This lad was an absolute star and as good as his dad ever was. Amazing! I look forward to seeing him in concert again in the future as he carries the legacy forward.
He is good like his father. Phill Collins one the big singers. He still around and his voice always the same, like the wine, better time after time. God Bless Phill. Dont stop singing, keep singing. Awesome.
For all of you commenting that Nic cannot drum shut the hell up and too the ones saying Phil cannot sing anymore You shut the hell up too so disrespectful!!!!! If your a true fan of Phil Collins but apparently not with these rude comments!!! I find it so disgusting!!! Phil is in bad health and look at him up there doing what he loves best!!! Nice is proud to be there with his Dad and Phil is Proud of his son!!!
Did you read Phil's autobiography? It's really good! He talks about everything, & readily admits his son is better on drums than he was at such a young age.
Love you to death. Thank you for saying all that. Phil will always be amazing to me if for no other reason that he did this for his fans (well that an he misses touring). It's not like he did it for the money.
He is just as good as his father was! It's very cool to watch him. I don't recall how old Phil was when he joined Genesis, but Nic is likely close to the same age, going out on tour with his Dad! This is a lot of fun to watch, and Nic has no signs of projecting arrogance or privilege just because of who he is. Outstanding!
Go Nicholas Go.... Phil will...along with Chester...always be the greatest drummers ..... But you my son...keep going and you have the ability to evolve into more than your father's prodigy.. With Phil's talent...and your talent.. You can be THE GREATEST my son God bless you all....and way to go Phil my Idol
Nic...GREAT job on such a classic, wonderful song!!!!! Your dad and Chester have to be extremely proud of you given your excellent rendition of that song!!!!!!!!! On a personal note, I am so incredibly glad you have become the great drummer you are. "Every man wants his children to grow up better than he was..." You might keep that in mind as you grow older. It is simply the finest tribute one can give to their parents. God bless you, your dad, Chester and all the wonderful, talented members of the Phil Collins band.
He's the ever brilliant musician that his father is, Phil Collins and Genesis is the music I grew up with and still love today and he raised a son that will carry on that legacy someday, I'm thinking it must be hard to be a drummer and the singer but Phil has always done that exceptionally well The man is an icon. His type of music lasts over decades and you never grow old of it
That was breath taking…as I sat on my sofa! The upper body strength and sheer stamina that a drummer must have…and his dad never wrote simple tunes! Nic is fantastic. I hope he is looking after his body as it will take a toll. Can see that with his dad. Pleased someone on stage got that film as he did seem unaware until right near the end. 🐑🇳🇿NZ
I totally agree with you! I took the footage but was not on the stage, I was in the crowd & I'm sure Nic would not have been unaware he was being filmed because I was a long way away. Interestingly though, if you watch another of my videos with Nic doing a drum solo, he was definitely aware I was filming because I was in the fourth row & there's nowhere to hide! 😄
@@meljamie Hey Mel, Four years on (21/01/2023), I'm on an emotional roller coaster ride, wanting to turn back time and relive these special moments all over again. I'd love to play Phil and Nic side by side and compare them. The world has a great void now that Phil has officially retired, people may say Phil shouldn't have gone out on the road again, except I'm grateful he thought of his fans, ... and Australia, and came "down under" one last time. This video is brilliant, ... I'm glad you took and and then uploaded it. Thanks, Mel. Illie xo
@@icoughran7068 Hey Illie, my sentiments exactly - can you believe it's been four years? I thought we were so lucky that Phil came to Australia (& NZ) to showcase his wonderful songs for what seems to be the last time (🥺) & share his brilliantly talented son with us. I am so thankful I got to see it, record it & share it with awesome people like yourself 😊
@@meljamie Mel, ... to be honest, I don't want to believe it, haha. It was a blessing to witness Phil and Nic together. It's bittersweet because I really love Chester too. Did you happen to get a video of Phil and Nic singing/playing, "You Know What I Mean"? I had my phone, but my photos/videos aren't nice and sharp like yours. You know what I'll be focusing on the next few weeks, lol? 🥁🎤😎😊🤗😭❤
@@icoughran7068 Illie, I totally agree. Did you get to see Chester play with Phil? I think I did record You Know What I Mean but they were sitting with their backs to me so it wasn't as good as this one. I went 2 nights & I'll check to see what I recorded. If it's halfway decent, I'll post it 👍 Sounds like you're going to have a great few weeks! 💯💃🤟
Wonderful sight, wonderful sound between father and son ! Nicholas is an awsome drummer ! Always fantastic this Song, Father and Son, two together talented ! Passion in the Voice and in the Drums, you're so beautiful to listen and see, Phil and Nicholas !
He was taught by one of the best. He appears to be very proud playing for his dad and I am sure Phil Collins is a very proud father. I can't wait to see what he does out on his own. Wishing Nicholas the best of success, we all know he is going to go far. 😃
This kid is flippin amazing. This is the first close up I’ve seen of him and he’s just killin it! That’s a huge job for a kid his age. PC has to be sooo proud! I’M proud of him and he isn’t even my kid!
I see Phil's face a lot in Nick's.. so nice 💜 everything else was said with everyone else's comments ha ha ... I see a legend in the making here. Proud moment for dad and son.
I listen to THIS so much that sometimes I'll just play it in the background while I do something else but as soon as he actually starts playing I can picture him going to town on that hi hat. And the fact that he's mouthing the words as he's playing is wonderful.
Just saw him in Detroit and was just taking it in, looking at the Arena and I was thinking HOW AWESOME it must be for Nic to be 18 and playing with his day and have 15,000-20,000 people singing the chorus?! Must be surreal! 😁 Had GOOSEBUMPS from head to toe.
I just love coming here and putting it on loop play and just scrolling through the comments at all the love for this video, how amazing Nic is and the love so many still have for Phil.
I cannot stop watching this over and over again ❤ I grew up watching and listening to Phil Collins who was Always the best singer and drummer of all time. His son Nicholas is already on his way to becoming the best drummer ever just like his Dad. Absolutely a perfect job well done Nicholas ❤ Thank you for posting and sharing this beautiful precious Blessed video 🙏❤🙏
Absolutely looks like his dad at his age gifted like his father too Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, The dear Lord has given gifts to both of them
@18 yrs old & playing pro on some complicated songs! Thats talent & alot of hard work! You go Nic! Rock it better than dad one day! Cant wait to see him & dad live in Oct!
Nic certainly is a stick off Phil’s kit! Nicholas has so much of his Dad’s natural musical ability and he obviously worked hard to get to be as accomplished as he is at 15-17 years old being able to be the drummer for his Dad the legendary Phil Collins! I appreciate you sharing this fantastic view of this kid who we hopefully will see much of in the future! Nice to see a Collins man hitting something! This is the best view of Nicholas playing I’ve seen. Congrats and thanks for sharing with us! Thanks again for sharing this gem! God Bless you.
He is truly remarkable! I'm so glad you enjoyed watching it, I was overjoyed that I got to take it! I really hope he goes far & when he does I'll be cheering all the way. Thank you and you're very welcome :) God bless you too!
I think this is such a beautiful moment. Father and son playing together. Father bringing son into the fold. Son playing with his father to help father continue to share his gift with the world. They clearly share a talent. I hope Nick has a long and prosperous future in music.
Erik de Leest You haven’t seen many young people have you. Little Kids way younger than this do even more amazing thing musically. And he’s not that young. Taking nothing away from him, of course. I’m just saying that is lots of talented and hard working people out there in the world. He’s one of them.
@@JK-vc7ie I've seen a lot but under the pressure of being the sun of PC himself, he's doing way more than you'd expect. Dealing with this kind of pressure isn't easy!
i cant even imagine what Nicholas is thinking while he plays his fathers songs... i am so proud of nicholas .. i love phil collins and to pass on that talent and gift is our blessing
