Depression is the lack of hope. And leads to substance abuse, including eating junk food. How do we provide hope in a disconnected community? Many (including the government, via tax exemption) think churches and religion is the answer. However, this is failing (or failed too). We need to build REAL communities, and connection...rather than isolation, rugged individualism, and hyper-consumerism in our divided cities and towns.

This is why I roll my eyes that everyone who thinks that universal health care and a decent safety net is somehow just allowing people to mooch. If anything, it gives everyone a bit of a foundation so they can try to build their lives. I think especially about how many people who want to start small businesses but are afraid to because they don't have the capital, and they can't afford to lose their employer based healthcare. think about all those people that are out there working as contractors and freelancers and could probably build a life for themselves more easily on this ideology if they had easier access to healthcare. I also think about how many of those small businesses need larger businesses would benefit from not having to pay health care. How many more people they could employ, and how many more businesses could start.

I was thinking about this literally 15 minutes ago. You can't fix anything in this country right now without providing the youth with a path to go forward. I'm 18 and literally this entire generation is plagued by depression, suicide, and drug abuse because why would things get better in 10 years from now when everything looks like it's going downhill, no one is listening to us and we get told that we are whining and crying about everything. We can't do anything about our future, we are constantly being shut down because we are trying to protect OUR future. Once you figure out a way to make millennials and gen-z optimistic, this country will skyrocket.

Even if we save it’s barely anything since cost of living is so high along with school fees. This is why most of us stay with our parents until our late 20s and need their financial backing during this time. The rising cost of housing, food, utilities, and taxes are what is killing us. People with millions of dollars will never understand, the middle class goes into work each day wondering if they will have a job by Friday; because some millionaire has found out he can make an extra 10 cents by screwing over his employees. All of these problems come from wealth without responsibility, we may work for the rich, but we need to show them they don't own us.

Administer breakfast (for funding) 3. Teach Lang Lesson for upcoming state exam (for funding) 4. Teach guidance lesson 5. Take out breakfast trash And if I miss a step, I’m criticized and labeled a bad teacher. And the rest of the day is very similar. @ I understand your viewpoint, but police is not the whole answer. Rahm Emanuel tried to flood those areas with cops and it didn't help. You have to look at things from the viewpoints of those in that mess...both innocent and criminal. You are born and grow up in poverty with little chance of economic movement. You are hounded by police and treated like a crook all your life. You walk in fear of the actual criminals killing you just for what block you live on. I'm not making this up. Your schools are underfunded or shut down, and you watch Mayor after Mayor pour tax dollars into downtown but nowhere else. Your only chances in life are McDonald's or Walmart. It's no shock the drug trade attracts so many...or the fear of being killed for little reason draws many into forming more gangs. It's easy to say it's just people who are taking the easy path to crime, but many fail to see how little chances these people have for the straight and narrow path with success...which is why fixing the poverty will do way more than doubling the police in the area.

And a purpose driven life. Having sense of meaning. A sense of pride and satisfaction. Recognition for your work, your time, your sacrifice. Fair pay, fair time off, good working conditions, life balance. The absolute greed at the top is out of control. I see jobs today that pay no more than when I graduated college 25 years ago. Yet cost of living is way above that! A multiplier of __ depending on where you live. CEO or executive pay has gone up over 350% since the 1970’s yet there is no money to pay workers a fair wage? If the MINIMUM WAGE stayed in par with inflation it would be over $19 an hour! That is 38k a year. Then tax that at just about the highest marginal rate (depending on your state) say between 35/39%. That leaves one with, around $27,000 for everything else. Give me a break. Yet the rich think it is crazy to bring it up to $15 an hour, while they make millions. There are so many issues plaguing this country, so much opposition, so much partisanship, and honestly so many in denial and ignorant that unless Bernie wins, and even then he will need the senate to get anything done, we will need a revolution to right the ship. Instead of doing this preemptively, like we need, it will take the vast majority lying half dead and homeless before the ones who vote against their own good wake up!

Obesity can be directly linked to economics. The less money you have the worse options you have. Now, you can also through in education, addiction to sugar, salt, and corporate farming. The vast majority of our food is shit! It’s full of preservatives, sugar, and sodium. Our food portions are ridiculous! Let’s not forget people are working longer and harder for less. People don’t have gardens much anymore. Giant grocery chains are the only options for rural populations. Physical fitness has been cut in schools. Sports are often to expensive for families to fully participate having to travel all over the country. The cuts in jobs lessens the tax revenues for schools, leaving them to consolidate as their only option. The privatization of schools is a way of discriminating against the poor, starting a segment of our population all ready behind. Travel around this country and tell me how great we are! We need a revolution! This country is a shell of what it was when I was a kid! It’s pathetic and sad. If Trump wins, if the senate stays bought by corporations and Wall Street. You can all but expect this trend will continue to where 80%!if the population will go bankrupt just trying to take care of their aging parents, their kids, and themselves. One more major recession (just another word for a reconcentration of wealth and power) and people will literally have nothing or be underwater for the rest of their lives. Life expectancy will go down, more people will be sick, more will die. Corporations and the rich have pretty much set the table. The door for hope and change is closing rapidly!!! But I wouldn’t be surprised that the vast majority still will vote against their own interests taking the rest of us who are not in denial, not anti intellectual, not in love with a cult of personality down with them!

The change of the focus from criminalization to clinical help here in Portugal had a tremendous positive effect. And it was the Socialist Party that made that happen. Their are again in power and the left side of the Parlament is now trying to make weed legal. Last week the Left voted to allow euthnasia also. And Portugal also has a great health care system (kind of a Medicare for All).

Some states in the US do allow for assisted suicide. Although my state Virginia does not. With the right steps in place to make sure it is not abused, I am all for it. I have watched several elderly die a long and painful death. My poor grandmother kept saying after a heart attack that she was more than ready to go, then she had a stoke and was put in a home which although she could not talk are walk, I could see from her gestures she hated. There should be that option for those that want it. (Personally if I got to that point, I would like to be zapped into oblivion after flying around with everyone cheering like in Logan's Run)

"late-stage capitalism" is an ironic phrase coming from someone who supports mass immigration that only benefits the capital class while depressing the wages of everyone already here. you will never get all the workers of the world to unite against the global capital class. they don't all have the same interests because different peoples are different, and this is something leftists like yourself refuse to accept because your entire ideology rests on the idea that humans come out of the womb as blank slates and that all cultures would produce exactly the same quality of life for their society when given the same conditions as any other. neither of these things are true yet you believe them with certainty. you don't believe this based on reason. you believe it based on faith and emotion. and that is why no one outside your bubble takes your arguments seriously.

The dismantling of rural America is being copied all over the West. Some of it is caused by the curse of resource-based economies. A sustainable forestry practice would have kept Oregon going much longer but forestry companies were allowed to act irresponsibly like it was a gold rush. The Green New Deal would be a life line to many forestry towns. Britain, France, Canada and Japan all have the same issue - rural ghost towns. Kids go to cities for education and jobs and never come back. Better educational centers in rural areas is a start. Economic planning and study by real professionals, not hacks, before a dime is spent. Government loans for new industries to locate near these new colleges with the stipulation that they have to repay the loanif they relocate. No more Walmart cut and runs. Public health initiatives to resolve the unethical pharmacies feeding the opioid crises (the Sandlers sales practices need new laws) and the meth labs. Subsidized housing in these rural centers...most millenials hunger to be debt free. Their student loans, mortgages/rent and child care are swallowing them whole financially. Improved infrastructure - so much of rural infrastructure is very neglected and delapidated - it's why industry concentrates on the coasts - shorter transit times for exports. High speed Internet also. Access to the Internet in rural areas is very hit and miss. Jobs head to low-wage countries with poor working conditions. Those good paying jobs in rural America weren't stolen by countries like China - they were GIVEN away via trade agreements that the establishment of both parties supported. I know now that whenever these 1% have an economic proposal, it needs to be examined 6 ways from Sunday because they lied about NAFTA etc.

All Americans need to watch Michael Moore's documentary "Where to Invade Next". It shows how different European countries have adopted sensible policies to help its people. Portugal and the battle with drugs is one example. France with school lunches is another example. There are many small but significant things America can do to help people be more educated, healthier, happier, working good paying jobs, etc. Right now this country is set up to work only for the corporations and the wealthy. That is not capitalism anymore. That is extreme capitalism, aka corporitarism based on greed. Anything taken to the extreme is not good. There needs to be balance. And Americans need to stop buying stupid shit and BS. Live within your means. You don't need the latest gadget. Who are you showing off to? Save your money, keep it simple.

No, obesity problem is more related to food industry, America is hooked on sugar insanely. I came to the states from Europe in early 90s and was shocked. Europeans go jobless and depressed too, but they don't get so fat from it. I'm afraid some points he makes are misleading. There is also the culture of isolationism that is reflected in American urban planing that forces people into front-door-car-front-door lifestyle. You do not have that issue with European style urban planing.

If we want to bring good paying and interesting jobs to the country, we must institute a positive and consistent fair trade policy. Rump's punitive and inconsistent trade war, only makes things worse. However, his policy is just an extension of a long history of negative and counterproductive policies. The Freedom Dividend that Andrew Yang was talking about was the most direct way to help in many of these areas . Raising the minimum wage gets lost even before it takes effect . Being that is a direct cost and a company will increase its price on the goods its makes to counter that meaning you end up at the same place you started. The VAT tax he planned to counter this effect would work because if they raise the price they will only gain even more tax rather than profit. And the consumer would still come out ahead.

The BEST thing we could do for our rural areas would be to reinvest in our people through investments in infrastructure, education and health care. That would allow rural hospitals to remain open and expand and would provide good-paying jobs all over the country. The people with those jobs would then be able to support local restaurants, grocery stores, and all the other small businesses that small towns and rural areas need to thrive. Those areas would then become desirable places to live and a cost-effective alternative to expensive larger cities, resulting in further private investment and growth. People would be healthier and happier. How do we accomplish that? The answer is amazingly simple: we HAVE TO return to a rational, progressive taxation system like we had in the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties, with the rich and extremely rich paying something approaching their fair share.
