Libra Group’s Vice Chairman Nicholas Logothetis delivered a keynote fireside chat at The Economist Impact’s Eastern Mediterranean Business Summit in New York City at the University Club of New York on April 26, 2024. In a wide-ranging discussion facilitated by The Economist’s Joan Hoey, Nicholas reflects on Libra Group’s Greek roots and the organization’s continuous investment in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean, which originated in the 1970s with the Group’s original maritime subsidiary, Lomar Shipping.
Reflecting on Greece’s economic boom after 10 years of financial crisis, Nicholas credits the hard work of the Greek people. He also discusses Libra Group’s longstanding commitment to Greece and the greater region, noting “we believe in Greece,” and sharing that the organization has continuously invested, but also plans to increase its investments in the region. Currently, Libra Group maintains a significant pipeline of projects in renewable energy, real estate, and hospitality in Greece. For example, Aria Hotels, the Group’s Greek-born hospitality subsidiary, recently leased 10 electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) for use at Aria’s properties across Greece. In addition, Libra Philanthropies, Libra Group’s sister organization and an independently-run 501(c)(3) foundation, has created several philanthropic initiatives to support innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic mobility in the region.
Discussing Greece’s economic boom, Nicholas notes the competitive environment to attract foreign direct investments (FDI), and calls upon Greece and the greater region to strengthen public institutions that lower risk and support FDI, including reforming the judicial system, to build confidence of foreign investors.
