The one edge that SEALs have above every other unit out there. Not just in the US military but worldwide. The one thing US Navy SEALs do better and more than anyone else? They’re by far the best authors the military has to offer. Them boys know how to swim and write books about it.

There are way more SEALs (~3000) than Rangers though (~2000), and way more Green Berets (~6700) than SEALs. The other units aren’t more specialized, but generalized across multiple sets, whereas Ranger Regiment really focuses mostly on DA. The OPTEMPO in Ranger Regiment is noticeably different, a very all-business environment with constant live fires, rotary wing ops, airborne ops, night CQM, CQB, constantly deploying to different places and hitting targets. SEALs spend a lot of time dealing with methods of insertion, to include the water as a priority set, along with MFF (which sucks up a lot of time and resources and is rarely used operationally). They also have to do VBSS and train all the subsets that build up to that, as well as what they call Land Warfare. They are smaller sub units who like to run off and go drinking as often as possible, which leads to a lot of distractions from training and admin problems. SF is anyone’s guess what individual ODAs are doing. One could be off doing a JCET in their AOR overseas, while the others are doing methods of insertion training (mountaineering, SCUBA, MFF, watercraft, horses, mobility), or cross-training the MOSs, additional language TNG for their AOR, and a lot of individualism with schools and other assignments. Totally different culture than Ranger Regiment. Ranger Batt is GO-GO-GO 24/7 with live fires, CQM, CQB, demo/breaching, FAST roping, jumping, Raids, and doing it with foreign partners like Paras, Royal Marines, Thai Rangers, Korean SOF, Aussies, real-world stuff, then refit and block leave.

@@tedfio1tedfio1 In my 3rd Recon Platoon, we had a SOG veteran come brief us on some of the lessons they learned. I've got all the SOG books as well, so I'm quite familiar with CCN, CCC, and CCS and what they did. They were basically SMUs who recruited from SF and tribal fighters who had been recruited and trained by SF, but were not within Army SF Groups and the command structure 5th SFG ran out of Nha Trang. 5th Group was run almost like a big army command, with officers all over Nha Trang, spit & polish, painted sand bags, stenciled unit designations, dress-right-dress, lots of garritroopers. SOG was the wild west, as were SF A-Camps in the hinterland. SOG started out with NSC-directed Special Reconnaissance that had to be deniable, because they were in Laos photographing NVA troops violating the neutrality treaty using Laos as a major pathway down into South Vietnam. SOG is quite disconnected from modern Army SF though, as SOG ceased to exist in the early 1970s.

There is no comparison SF to Rangers. It’s a totally different job. It was SF guys who trained and conducted missions with the Afghan Commandos who were modeled after Ranger Battalions. 12 SF guys leading a whole battalion. As I spent my first 5+ years in Ranger Battalion and ended my 20 year career in SF, I cringe when anyone in SOF compares themselves to SF as it shows a lack of knowledge of the SF mission. SEAL teams (non-team 6) were new to this kind of combat environment in AFG and didn’t have the numbers to do the Ranger mission. Rangers served as QRF in extreme situations as they had greater sized forces, training and had all the assets they needed dedicated to them. No one else had that nor was it needed when Rangers were planned for the jobs they performed. So of course they were the ones called to rescue when needed.

SF has always been SF, which is great but arguably Rangers have proven their worth to the SOF community and the world as being a comparable force in regards to highly surgical and kinetic operations. Lastly, let's be honest about this, SF has core mission sets and by nature are employed differently than Rangers .. even though GWOT had alot of overlap in regards to SOF and even infantry line units. Exactly, and Marines do more missions than Rangers, and the Army does more missions than the USMC. It's function of size and capabilities of the units. It's a meaningless statement (Irvin's), but people are reading into it and getting triggered. A lot of people haven't done much since leaving the military and it still weighs very heavily on their identity. I got out of the USMC after 2 tours in Iraq in 05, and yes, it'll always be part of who I am, but guys have to find something else in life to keep moving forward after getting out. Yeah, a bunch of guys are trying to make $$$ off it, while embellishing their service, but we've all heard the BS so many times by now that the schtick is wearing off as interest wanes. The guys who really were in the you know what aren't the ones talking about it all day every day. EVERY UNIT whether its SOF units like SF Units, Delta, Seals, Marsoc. And PJs want to have that claim of being the most elite, Its the attention of the internet, Social Media and the Movies, I served with the 101st ABN Div in Iraq and Afghanistan, OIF 05-07 and OEF 08. I have no problem saying I served in the 101st or 82d or even the 1st Cav Div because I deployed with those divisions. Its Undisputable that conventional units see the most action. you better look at WW1, WW2, Vietnam, the Gulf War and Iraq and Afghanistan was no different. The movies shifted the attention from units like 1st Cav in WW2 and Vitenam or 101st in Hamburger hill and platoon in vietnam because of the internet and movies. Its Simply because conventional units are in theater a lot longer. AL Queda and the Taliban don;'t care if you got the long tab, ranger tab, or got a seal trident. You are guaranteed to see action in a standard infantry unit than most other units Standard Infantry Units are always on patrol and will definitly have to react to contact. Not saying that SOF Units do not see a lot of action because they definitely do see action without a doubt. But so do an 88M Truck drivers delivering supplies from one fob to another. A 88M in Iraq or Afghanistan is more likely to get hit by an RPG, Small arms fire attack or even an IED. Or a blackhawk pilot has a 80 percent risk of being shot down. Combat is Combat Basically whether someone joins the Navy and make thru seal training or the marine corps and become an 0311 infantry. A person can join the the army and become a truck driver or even MP. In combat, combat do not have a specific way it fights, the enemy will attack a SF unit the same way they may mortor attack a fob with all the support personnel. they plant IEDs and use VBIEDS or shoot RPGs at all Allied forces whether they are SOF or conventional. WAR is WAR. so we have to stop D#$K sizing each other up and trying to say my junk is bigger than your simply because I served in a certain unit. As a former Recruiter, You will be amazed that 90 percent of Americans are to cowardly to even serve and join yet along choose which branch of service and MOS they qualify to do.

To answer some questions, there was good substantial number of men that did rotations from reconnaissance(75th) with Omega teams during the GWOT. You brought it up without disclosing the composition and to clear the water, reconnaissance is a 75th asset but has extended out of that mission set to support other units early in the war. Operations itself, Rangers have set blocking positioning for the unit and team 6 for an endless amount of raids under any designated task force for year, we're all one team right. I think Nick should've highlighted "Raid force", the size is greater for Rangers than of the manning within the Saber squadrons. Nick like most Rangers take a lot of pride in work during the GWOT, other unit's mission focus isn't as narrow as Rangers. As an example, GSP is just Intelligence, but everyone has different roles at the end of the day and some units has more personnel.

My squad got picked to help out. I was guarding the back of the house where the high value target was located and I was the only one back there. After doing that kind of work in Kosovo in year 2000, I decided that wasn't the type of work I wanted to be doing anymore and I got out of the US Army. If you're gonna talk about why Seals need rescuing at times by Rangers, you have to consider the type of missions 1st. Sometimes, the more surgical missions come with trying not to make critical errors. Anyone who has been on a high stake mission(s) like this, knows that one mistake can change how you will need to operate and function in terms of exiting or being extracted. If you are a Marine Raider in a situation like Marcus Lautrell, y'd probably want to be extracted by a MEU rather than a small detachment of Recon Marines. Guys, it's not about who's more elite at that time. It's about having everything a lite advanced infantry unit has in it's arsenal to save my black ass. I don't need surgical. Army Commanders ran the war so they used SEAls, GB, DEVGRU, DELTA , Marines and Rangers all together. Rangers were use for rescue and to work with all the other communities to support them with the regular military because they have the Army full land arsenal, Army even have the tanks when the Marines don't. If the war was at sea, island or coast than it would be the Navy doing the rescue and support. SEALS work in small groups so when they need support, the Army commanders sent it the Rangers, it was a land war, the Army brass ran the war but it makes sense that the Rangers follow support to the SEALs. It's all part of the bigger structure of the people running the war.

@Major_Pipps

I can't say I agree with him either. It is true that Rangers are called in for QRF and rescue missions... BUT, SEALs on an opp are just 4-5 guys. And SF can be as little as one guy, typically 3-4. So if they run into a full force of bad guys, ones that are super organized or professionally trained, they are forced to call for back up/rescue. And the Rangers will roll in 12-24 Rangers deep if not more. When being 100% honest, it's super hard to compare them because they do different jobs with a different focus and specialties. I'm a Marine, I've trained with all the branches top units minus MARSOC and Recon (Ironically I know) while doing the overseas contracting thing. And this is my humble opinion... And in the spirit of fairness, the pool of people was small so it might not have been the best of the best. The two Air Force Paratroopers, not impressed at all. There was more than once I wondered how they were Special Forces. The two SEALs, one was shit hot and one was super rusty I guess, he got dropped for a weapons violation. He had a misfire and flagged the range while looking for an instructor, looked down the barrel... It was pretty bad. Team four I believe he said. Super nice guy though, I liked him. The Marines, they were ok, did average/better than average at most things. Only two out of like fifteen Marines and myself were top of the class. I wasn't impressed with the Army infantry guys at all. We had like six - eight Rangers and they were all good to go, two of them were top of the class guys. Come to find out one of the top two Rangers was a Ranger of the year, so that made sense. I want to say we had two Army SF. I only remember the one, he was pretty much my direct competition throughout training. I was highly highly impressed with him. I know he was reserve, I wanna say he was from 18th or 19th group... It's been many years, I'm not 100% sure. My little humble opinion from my experience, I would say the Army SF guy was the most bad ass good to go.

ODAs can have a lot of guys who weren’t 11Bs though, but 11Bs make up at least 55-65% of SF last I checked. Ranger Regiment is almost all 11Bs with higher standards than in SF, go to the range more for CQM, do CQB all the time, plan/rehearse/execute DA all the time, practice working with various rotary wing and fixed wing assets all the time. SF is a lot slower-paced and you might not do CQB at all on a lot of Teams, because that’s not their mission. A lot of guys join SF thinking they will be doing DA all the time, and are sorely mistaken once they get to their ODA. It’s very different than being in Ranger Regiment. There should actually be another Ranger Battalion or 2, forward-deployed already in Europe and PACOM, and cut the number of SF to facilitate that. Senior guys in SF have said this to me, but were more harsh. They said we should just get rid of SF entirely and make more Ranger Battalions, but I still think the SF mission sets are needed too for FID, UW, and counter-insurgency. SF kinda sucks at language skills though and could do much better in that space. The proficiency levels of many guys on Teams is embarrassing.

There are weekends off. The weekend is earned every Friday before the cadre leave. And what’s left out is that the Scroll is always earned. It’s the only SOF unit that you’ll always go back to RASP. RASP 1 to get in as an enlisted man. Ranger School to get your tab to be eligible to be an NCO within the regiment and then RASP 2 to make that official. You’ll always go back to those Godforsaken rocks. And it may not be a hell week but Cole Range is where the only targets getting smoked are the candidates.

Just a Reminder that the Rangers have been disbanded twice in the middle of a war...WW2 & the Korean War. O and missed out on most of the Vietnam War minus the last 3 years. I love the Rangers, but those guy's aren't Delta let alone Green Berets their is a reason why the other two units have way more funding and schooling/training time.

"If those guys are so badass, why do they need a rescue" because they go behind enemy lines with some 4 SEALs against larger enemy forces and SOMETIMES... on OCCASION, they lose the upperhand against these enemy forces with TEN TIMES the numbers. SOMETIMES

Disclaimer: im not pro black or anti white, I go by personalities. But I was curious what black SOF guys opinions were because you rarely see or hear them. I watched the Shawn Ryan episode with Nick Irving and at one point he started talking about personal accounts with ghosts. To each his own, but to me, if you start talking about one on one accounts with ghost, I start to loose confidence in the authenticity of the conversation.

When are we going to stop living in the past and move on? This constant comparison commentary is getting ridiculously old. The war is over. Let’s go be with our families and serve our communities. After 9 years and 2 deployments to AFG I’m over the military and I don’t want my son to ever have to do what I did. I will never promote military service to him. If he wants to go then I will support him, but you won’t ever hear a word from me about glorifying the military. War only exists because of sin (pride/greed/power/etc.) Jesus Christ is our only hope in life and death. I will bet my life on it

As a former soldier myself I'm just gonna say it. Marine infantry and army ranger REGIMENT killed more than any of us. most of your special forces guys don't even see spec ops missions and many more lie about being special forces in the first place to civilians. 🤣 Don't fall for BS stories Marine bootcamp is the hardest for a reason they are the best ground units, I'm saying this as an 11Bravo.

No it was not evenly spread. Rangers got more work. CAG usually rolled with assets from RGT.

Yeah, the whole "we were the most consecutively deployed" is honestly some PR bullshit. What does that mean exactly? 10th MTN was consistently deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq for 12 month rotations and the 9 months post-2012 until we left Kabul. What the fuck are we talking about? Not hating on the guy, but that seems like such a pointless brag there based on... I have no idea.

I was saying the same thing. It's because the seals go in a much smaller unit. The rangers are like wolves they all the stick together a big unit. So they will never need help because they are all amongst each other in the pack.

@@didyouknowamazingfacts2790 ranger regiment smoke all SEAL teams at small unit tactics and it’s not even close. Small unit tactics are infantry tactics done at the squad and platoon level. The army conventional infantry developed small unit tactics before SEALs even came into existence. Ranger school is a small unit tactics leadership school. Most ranger missions are conducted at the squad to platoon size, just like regular light infantry. Rangers are much more scalable than SEALs are far superior to SEALs at recon, SUT, CQM, CQB, IADs, mission planning, smarter with breaching. SEALs are only elite to the rest of the Navy.

@@sgedeon01 Because in a ranger unit they are extremely disciplined and grow up under that structure. The Seals have that cowboy mentality. But no other unit is better when it comes to water operations. Which are hugely important because 70 percent of the planet is covered in water.

Rangers are the only SOF unit in the military (outside of JSOC) that doesn't award a new MOS code upon completion of selection. If you're in SF, or SquEALs, MARSOC, or the rest, you get a new MOS that requires you to be assigned somewhere within that unit, even if you're a shit bag. The only way to get another SOF guy out of their unit is to go through an arduous process of getting their Tab/Trident/whatever rejected. In Ranger Batt, you can be RFS'd at any time for not meeting the Ranger Standard. Fail to meet the standard, and you'll be on your way to the 82nd or 173rd with a quickness. I've seen dudes get orders cut to leave in less than 24 hours.
