If you add an extra negative electrode to your battery case version you will reduce or eliminate hydrogen out gassing. This is because during charging, electrolysis usually begins when the negative electrode is fully reduced. With the extra negative surface area, your battery is fully charged before that happens. Great videos.

I made a similar battery but I used black iron oxide power (pottery glaze) and Nickel Hydroxide powder. I put each in a separate sealable plastic container with a square of 6mm thick carbon felt and used a vibrating sander to shake the powder into each of the carbon felt squares until no more could get in. I put a weight on top of the carbon felt to keep it under the powder while it was shaking. I then dripped diluted PVA in water on to the carbon felt and pushed it in carefully until the carbon felt was soaked with the glue. I then dried it with a hair drier and put it in a jar of KOH electrolyte. I pushed a nickel welding rod through each carbon felt square to get the electricity into it to charge it. The capacity wasn't very good because the carbon felt I used was too dense, which limits how much active material you can put in the electrode. You can weigh the felt before and after to see how much powder you get inside of it. I got slightly better capacity using FeS instead of iron oxide in the negative electrode. I made the FeS by simply burning iron powder and sulfur (warning - very toxic fumes!) and grinding it in a coffee grinder. Might try the gel method with this type of battery when I have some time. Thanks for the video.

I make similar process with non flow vanadium redox battery without special membranes.

If I can suggest: Go ahead and use your black iron oxide powder at the anode, but first add about 5% S powder to it and heat it in your oven at about 200-250 Fahr. until the S fuses all the Fe3O4 particles. This will activate the iron. (don't bother making FeS material as you described above, which btw you don't have to burn - you just heat it in an old test tube really hot if you need to make it again). Then mix in a suitable amount of KOH to make a paste, and press it really really hard into a substrate like steel wool or perforated nickel sheet or Exmet. The trick is to really compress it hard, making it almost like a soapstone material, b/c iron oxide does not conduct electricity and you need that paste rammed and pressed into a solid as much as possible. A battery manufacturer would use a calendaring machine for this. Then, for your (+) plate, start with your Ni(OH)2 like you mentioned, add about 20% graphite or fine nickel powder (and 20% molasses if you want to 'copy' Edison's actual formula), and add enough KOH to make a paste, and press it really hard into a substrate like nickel foam or perforated nickel sheet. If it's not pressed really hard, it's not going to work b/c Ni oxides don't conduct either. If you wanted, you could plate some Ni on top of steel wool and use that as your substrate. Learn how to make your own Watt's solution and 'coin' things with Nickel, it will come in handy.

@@johansen5192 Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it out. A friend has a 6 ton bearing press that should compress the materials well enough :)

Nice work! I loved your carbon felt enhanced version, if you were to build it in a case, you would have the AGM equivalent of the lead acid. It would be really interested for you to try to build a complete 6 cell battery in that small case of yours in a future video. I know it's a lot of work, but it is fun project. Perhaps you could use carbon felt for the iron electrodes as well to make vertical construction easier. You can impregnate the carbon felt with a hot saturated solution of ferrous sulphate, then add a few drops of conc KOH to instantly form FeO gel in and on the felt, easier to make complete battery this way with plates in vertical position. Also for iron current collector, if you use impregnated carbon felt, you can use cheap expanded iron mesh as the current collector, just get type with the smallest sized holes. With some skill, you can also nickel plate the same mesh and use it for anode, though make sure to plate thick and smooth for durability. You can spot weld the same nickel strips used to connect lithium 18650 cells to the mesh to form the interconnects at the top.

Hi dear. İ want to use polymeric gel electrolyte for dye sensitized solar cell. But i am trying to learn which can be efficiency. İnspired your videos which named "making polymer gel electrolyte" i decided use this. Now i have bought potassium hydroxide and polyvinil alchocol. But i want to know which electrolyte can be efficiency for my project. İf u are given me about, you will make me happy and if you would say nickel iron gel is best solution, write the way step by step please. İ am 11th grade student prepearing for contest

Does the battery not already start redox reaction? Why do you charge?
@cayrex
@cayrex 8 месяцев назад
No. Because here I start with nickel hydroxide,... which is the material of discharged battery. So, for that reason I need to charge the cell, that I get nickel oxyhydroxide material.

can you make glass electrolite for solid state battery?
@brandengillette7794
@brandengillette7794 2 года назад
The glass would probably have to be under a super conductive state. Glass is an insulator as well as being chemically inert in its nature, it doesn't allow electrons to flow through it. Although that depends on the dielectric breakdown of the glass panel itself compared to the strength of the voltage applied. But batteries function with the transfer of charged ions ( an example would be a positively charged copper Adam) which proportionally reflects the movement of the elections in the circuit. Both positive and negative ions must be able to permeate through the electrolyte or salt bridge moving in opposite directions to there destined cathode or anode. The idea of solid state batteries has a goal and it's to prevent the formation of a crystal called a dendrite. This forms in the battery overtime in between the plates. And when it Bridges the two terminals it shorts out. This is why lithium batteries explode and cause Burns in spontaneous cell phones self destruction. Solid state tech could bring a means to prolong the life of the battery as long as the reactive components inside the battery are still working. This would be good news for rechargeable batteries since not only is the reaction inside the cells are reverse able. But the dendrites can be suppressed. Glass hower could be a good candidate for capacitors due to the need of a good non-conductive separator material.
