It’s only after he retired you realise how much nico pushed Hamilton. Nico was under rated. It also puts nico up there as he has beaten a 6 time world champion in the same car. Soon to be 7 and one of the greatest too. A lot of respect for nico and what he does to inform the fans on sky sports and his podcasts
Agreed. The battle between Lewis and Vettel never really became as close as it could and should have. I thought Vettel would do a lot better. Lewis vs Nico is the last great rivalry. Hopefully Max can push Lewis.
Competition at close quarters does strangs things to people. They will probably end up friends eventually but it will probably be after both have retired +10 years when they're reminiscing.
Exactly. Time can heal so much. Prost and Senna were on friendly terms by 1994 once Prost was out of the heat of battle. Alonso and Hamilton are not exactly mates but have been very complimentary about each other at various times since their intense one year rivalry. Hamilton/Rosberg never deteriorated as badly as those first two examplea so they will eventually be pally again.
As much as his rivalry with Hamilton was exciting to watch on TV and very dramatic, it's sad to see how their friendship got ruined especially in 2016.
I am a Hamilton fan and so Nico was the guy to beat when they raced against each other but I have an awful lot of time for Nico. He has shown himself to be a really humble, reflective and intelligent guy. You can see this in that he doesn't harbour any ill will towards Lewis and instead is able to see how great Lewis is and compliment him. He is much better for this as a person. No point harbouring any ill will. Too many people do that and it only makes them less happy. He's also not afraid to give an opinion even when it isn't necessarily the popular one.

Rosberg only won in 2016 because of reliability issues. Mercedes had swapped both drivers' mechanics and engineers ''to rebuild harmony within the team''. It was bullshit - for some reason, , Lewis' car had more issues that year. Nico retired as soon as he became champion - he knew he could never again repeat that. Fact is, Lewis is even better than Schumacher -he's the best driver F1 has ever seen!
Nico is a nice natured polite guy, very quiet and self aware he had no choice but to ignore all that and go in balls first As a Lewis fan I couldn't be prouder of Nico that year
Let's not kid ourselves, F1 needs drama between the drivers. It elevates the sport to new heights. Being from the States, you rarely see F1 being mentioned on ESPN, or SportsCenter but whenever Hamilton and Rosberg went at it, it was broadcasted and it got people interested. I would have loved to see young Verstappen in a Mercedes alongside Hamilton, boy what a weekly drama that would be!?
It started to go downhill after what Nico did in Monaco, Hamilton was on a role and he knew he had to do something to try and stop it and it worked, which riled Lewis.
You have to give Lauda credit for his leadership. Ron Dennis had a hard time back in the late 80’s making two large egos realize that the McLaren team came first. So Mercedes-AMG deserves a lot of credit in dealing with Hamilton and Rosberg.
Well it did not used to be so. Graham Hill and Jim Clark used to go on holiday together, with their girlfriends/wives/children. This current confrontational default is something that happened in parallel with the increased sponsorship and corporate influence on F1. It was not so in the past. Clark was secure in his ability so did not need to play mind games or indulge in one-upmanship. Nor did Hill, Rindt, Stewart, or any other drivers in the 1960s or 70s. It is a comparitively new phenomenon, probably starting, or at least culminating in Schumacher's extreme selfishness, including the farcical and artificial "accidents" deliberately designed to stop qualifying after he had established a fastest lap. Jim Clark, nor Graham Hill, nor any other driver from the 60s would have dreamed of being so dishonest.
Sorry but that was not a rivalry, shouldn't even mention Prost's name in the same sentence as Senna. Mansell was more of a rival to Senna than Prost ever was.
Nico is well spoken but the bottom line is u gotta commit to winning so be friends with the enemy going to war racing u can't bring friendship into it when ur neck an neck equal talent and equipment....u have to make a choice 100 percent focus on racing..it's too much mental distraction if ur wondering or worrying about friendship positions rather winning on track....it's good bust combustible relation when the driving gets that tite...

The most convenient but pathetic way of human race for rebuilding lost friendships or working relationships that went bad once...: Make his or her ''friend's'' or co-worker's life a living hell and after retiring or after a period of absence...: ''Sorry, i have nothing against you, it was my fault'', and bla bla blaa. Yeah sure... I've seen colleagues at jobs where one makes the living hell out from the other, being unfair to the way he or she treats him or her. And when the bad colleague lives, goes and hugs the ones who hurted with a big smile saying sorry if wasn't right and then gives the phone number for a coffee. The right response to such people is ''fuck off''! P:S: I'm not talking about Rosberg. I'm talking generally about if a friendship or a working relationship is lost, it's lost. So much time while friends or co-workers, is enough to show if it worths to last. What's the point for second try. Your friendship or your working relationship had a lot of time to show itself if it was worthy or not. What's the point for second try. If not from the first try, then goodbye and go on! Don't get me wrong, there are some rare cases where lost relationships can be rebuilt and that happens only if the one who apologises, apologises honestly. But in today's society, this is very rare.
I really miss Nico Rosberg giving Lewis Hamilton a hard time. They really brought out the best in eatch other and the worst, and we love to see that! Plus you have to remember that Nico still managed to nearly beat him 2 times and beat him 1 time even though Mercedes cleary favoured Hamilton as their number 1 driver given Hamilton's close relationship to Wolff and Lauda (just look at Bottas and him now, Bottas constantely ordered to make way for Hamilton so he can break more records for the austrian Wolff and his not-so german and more so british-based Mercedes team).
Ironic that Lewis Hamilton, one of the best things to happen to modern F1, has the single most toxic fan base in the sport’s history. It’s his fans who make people hate him, and that’s such a shame.

Yeah there is no wonder why the conversation went "nice". Lewis wouldn't give 2 shits about Nico retiring. In the end Lewis still ended Nico's career and he has more titles/wins. Nico will barely be remembered in 15 years but Lewis will go down as one of the best in the sport.

I think it was Hamilton that turned it ugly, as with Alonso played the victim card. Rosberg very under rated imo, look at Bottas now. Rosberg was always there or there abouts and finally did it. Only him and button beaten Hamilton across a season (alonso tied)
I mean he had a family that he didn’t want to neglect. Being away from them all the time probably didn’t feel good for him. I understand why he left. It’s a little like James Hunt, he proved he was better (at least for the time), and then quit after proving himself. Nico cared about his family over the sport and that makes him super respectable.
He won the champion and that's an achievement that not every drivers can achieve in their career. Give it a break. Lewis is great, no doubt, but I do not think you have any credibility to say Nico isn't great. Look at how Valtteri right now, he can't even provide a competent competition to Lewis on the grid.

Shows only that Hamilton get's way to high praised from his Fanboys. He got beat by a upper midfield driver at BEST. The years before that Hamilton had to fight him too. If Hamilton would be as good as his fanboys make him out to be Rosberg would have gotten destroyed by Hamilton. He got beat by the second best german driver of the current era. This year Vettel was leading in the Drivers Championship until Monza with a SLOWER car then Hamilton has. Shows again how good of an driver Hamilton is. Ausgedachtes Konto Rosberg's car failed in Abu Dabi 2014 but he was still behind Hamilton in the race, nothing proves he'd have won the title if he could have finished the race. And since you like to bring up the past, this precise race had doubled up points, if the same final race in 2016 had, Hamilton would have won the title. I assume you are a Rosberg fan, which is fine, but that shouldn't keep you from seeing the facts ;)

Some good points but please let go of the rags to riches myth. Lewis was never abjectly poor and he was not deprived. His childhood was similar to millions of other boys at the time.
