Grande!!!!!!!!
I recall that he never developed a large fan base in his lifetime. Neither did many great artists. But his recordings are fabulous. Thanks to RU-vid for preserving these treasures.
The young Gedda was a miracle. He is way underrated. You HAVE to hear his high D's in the LIVE Puritani duet with Sutherland in 1963? It's on RU-vid. He is the only tenor who actually matched Joan Sutherland enormous high D's and C's. Sounds like Sutherland is in this Puritani too. Of course during the 60's, all the Elvira's in Puritani had Sutherland in it. BTW, the two D's from Gedda in the later Puritani duet with Sutherland blows Gedda's D flat here by far!
I Puritani" is my favorite opera and 'A te o cara', my favorite aria / ensemble. With the right tenor, accompanying vocal artists, conductor, chorus and orchestra it can be a breathtakingly beautiful experience. If any of these elements goes awry the whole thing can turn into a train wreck. First and foremost, 'A te o cara' requires exceptional breath control on the part of 'Arturo' in order to achieve the phrasing the aria demands. The singer must also know exactly where to take breaths or the musical line is ruined. Furthermore, if he rushes... well, it can all end up just being about the high notes. Big deal. But, done right, the C#(s) become natural extensions of the preceding phrases and the musical experience becomes both sublime and thrilling. As it is here. And yes, unmistakeable Joan Sutherland here and WOW does she sound great!
Lástima no haberlo conocido personalmente.
I once heard him sing 'Bimba dagli occhi pieni di follia' to open the love duet from Butterfly. Changes the whole opera, really. I believe the video is on RU-vid. :)
