such tremendous energy and force, with an overwhelming tidal wave of triumph, life over death(war) at the end. Love how he retreats into pianissimo at the end before bringing it back for the climax! a piece for our time.

New to this wonderful work. Opening of 3rd movement reminds me of Shostakovich, but then the latter came later. Looked it up an found this quote about Nielsen: "Old enough to have met and been influenced by Brahms, and young enough to have an influence on Dmitri Shostakovich".

One of the best performances of this piece. So much attention to detail, so much attention to the whole and it brings out the contemporary aspects of the music. And the orchestra seems to enjoy it a lot :-)

A very good performance. Love how Jarvi honors the majesty of the closing moments, without rushing it, as so many conductors do.

This symphony is called "The Inextinguishable", but some of the presenters at the classical radio station in Houston with which I was employed called it "The Indistinguishable". There was a Nielsen revival taking place at the time in the recording industry, and we used to play Nielsen's orchestral works quite regularly in the 1970s at KLEF-FM in Houston.

It's spellbinding, and this isn't an easy piece to pull off well. The Nielsen 4th is IMO, a culmination of the entire Romantic period in music, beginning with Beethoven. This work is at times tender, at times angry, at times mocking, but like the great symphonies of his 19th century predecessors, it ends heroically in triumph.

Yes. It's wonderfully emotional in a positive way. Hard fought perseverance. Funny thing for me; When I hear the horns refrain before the final orchestral swell, it reminds me of the song Soldier Boy by The Shirelles. Oddly fitting.

Tremendous performance. Paavo Jarvi is a conductor of magical inspiration, very rare in this bland new century. And the orchestra played with visible passion and heartfelt commitment in what is an orchestral showpiece. The whole performance is a tribute to the 'inextinguishable' spirit of music and human creativity.

A wonderful powerful performance of this great Nielsen work. Excellent recording as usual from this source .The only downside is the terrible camera directions . The cameras were all over the place and we were seeing many shots which were just not associated with the instruments being played at that particular moment. Thankfully this camera direction was sorted for nearly all following recordings of this first rate orchestra and has been virtually flawless since then. How could there be not one shot of the two tympani players taking their deserved bow at the end? Unforgivable!

"I have an idea for a new composition, which has no programme but will express what we understand by the spirit of life or manifestations of life, that is: everything that moves, that wants to live ... just life and motion, though varied - very varied - yet connected, and as if constantly on the move, in one big movement or stream. I must have a word or a short title to express this; that will be enough. I cannot quite explain what I want, but what I want is good." Nielsen concentrated on this until 1916, and named his 4th symphony "The Inextinguishable" (Det Uudslukkelige). The name does not apply to the symphony itself, but rather to "that which is inextinguishable". In his notes for the symphony, Nielsen refers to "the elemental will to live".

What a tremendously exciting symphony this is, especially in a performance as good as this. My favorite performance is however still the one by Launy Grondahl, recorded around 1950 or so; my LP copy boasts some great sound for the time, too. (I've wondered about the great theme first heard at 1:48, sometimes called the "will to life" theme, and its resemblance to a major theme in Strauss' "Alpine Symphony", which was completed a year earlier, 1915. Does anyone know if one inspired the other? Not to take away from either composer's accomplishment; they are both masterpieces in any case.)

I'm sure it's very difficult to balance the strings, percussion and brass in these last few minutes... For me, the strings need space to ride, fade and reappear... as they do here, without being overpowered by the brass or percussion... But brass and percussion still play a very important role and need to be heard...There are quite a few renditions online to compare, and while sound mixing and sound quality play their parts, it's amazing the differences between some. Great symphony.
