I left secondary school less than 2 years ago. We learned about the Romans, the Normans, the Tudors, the Civil War, WW1 and WW2 (which I imagine have been taught for decades and decades)... We did maybe 2 lessons on the Atlantic slave trade and in no way were we told that ordinary white people or British people were still oppressors today for the actions of the past.

Yeah Nigel the truth hurts, I'm 70 and white, and I learnt about the three-way trade while studying history in secondary school and the part Britain took in the slave trade. I also learnt about Britain's part in ending it. I also learnt about the East India Company, the Raj and the end of British rule in India. I didn't feel shame or guilt but I did gain an understanding of what the Black and Sub-Continent population experienced under British rule. It has made me a better more empathetic person. The only reason for not teaching that is either guilt or a misplaced feeling of racist superiority. Either way not something the education should be doing.

Winning a parliamentary seat may turn out to be a setback for Farage, especially if the new Speaker is robust and won't tolerate any crap. Farage could be put on the hot seat, so to speak, what's he going to do.... storm out of parliament when he's asked a difficult question? And should Farage provably lie, he will be forced to correct the record. Then there's having to deal with his local constituents, they won't take kindly to being gaslit by him. They'll want results, something that Farage never delivers.

I watched the BBC documentary about what the Greek coast guard is doing with migrants crossing the med, masked men taking people including children back out to sea and abandoning them in inflatable liferafts, also throwing them of the side of boats into the water and allowing them to drown. is so frightening that this is happening now, and that this could become the solution to the migration issue with awful racists like farage trying to gain control.

As a retired teacher i am insulted by Farage.

I think it'll be a positive thing if Farage gets in as an MP as he'll finally be held to account and I'm sure the population at large will see the real Farage when held under scrutiny (both from his constituents and via Parliament as well). He's always been barking from the sidelines. Put him in the spotlight where he actually has responsibility for once (being an MEP, a job he never took seriously based on his appearance and voting record in the European Parliament).

The cost to tax payers for housing immigrants is currently nearly £3 billion each year. In contrast to that, the cost to tax payers from lost revenue caused by Brexshit is £100 billion each year. And the list of other gigantic costs is so epic that the absolutely tiny cost of housing migrants just fades into insignificance. And yet here we are year after year, listening to the same politicians making a massive deal about migrants again. It doesn't matter how high or low the numbers are, they never stop going on about it and they never will. Anyone who tries to claim that immigrants are a cause for concern is an ignorant buffoon who doesn't really give a toss about the country at all. They just get a kick out of blaming foreigners for all the things that have happened as a result of voting for obvious charlatans and conmen. By teaching about mans inhumanity to man, you don't create oppressor and victim. You show how far we have come since then and why it should not happen again. Farage et al are worried that those they see as the once oppressed will expect equality and to them equality means losing their superiority status in some form.

This is the same line that was taken by Enoch Powell in his infamous 'Rivers of Blood' speech in 1968. In it Powell talked of a 'Decent' man from a 'Decent' family who were having to put up with neighbours who happened to come from the Caribbean. According to Powell, this 'Decent' man was within his rights to want his neighbour removed, purely because his neighbour had a dark skin. The only difference between Powell and Farage is that Farage is better at making his arguments APPEAR to be more reasonable and more palatable - whereas in reality, there is ZERO difference between Farage and Powell. Great report. Farage said in a local speech recently that Reform would of course look after people that they considered as truly disabled because society looks after the "weakest". In addition to his ablesplaining the label of "weakest" is alarming. It isn't a compliment. History tells us where things can lead if leaders classify people as weak or different. Ditching the discrimination laws is a terrifying prospect.
