"Dama de Noche" is called in the Philippines. It is a tropical plant, it emits very intoxicating smell from 4 oclock in the afternoon til evening. It is also sometimes called "Alas Quatro" Four o clock, that's when it starts to emit its smell til early evening at 7 pm! I remember still my childhood days that a distant neighbor have it in front of their yard and I always pass by and walk slowly near it. It also depends where the direction of wind is going that you will get the sweet smell in the evening. If you are new in the neighborhood, you never where it is coming from!

Your identification is correct. It has the common name night blooming jasmine. It is actually called a night-blooming jessamine. It has narrow lanceolate leaves and originates from the West Indies. It is not a Telosma cordata also called Tonkin jasmine, which has broad heart shaped leaves. Neither of them are true jasmine. Both of them releases a powerful perfume at night. Both have greenish white flowers. It also reminds me of the normal jasmine and locquat tree flowers. Both flowers contain benzyl alcohol (possibly the Tonkin jasmine) which are used in perfumes. I found one down the street.

Definitely one of the most potent fragrance plant. The fragrance can fill an entire courtyard. I mean people just knock on the doors just to ask about the plant 🌼☜ (↼_↼)

We live in Texas. Do they hold up well in the TX heat and survive mild winter? Perennial flower plant? Do they need to be trimmed down in certain seasons to bloom? Thx so much for sharing your video!

Great questions. I live in San Diego and this plant has been fine in a part sun environment under a Queen Palm and a Chocolate Mimosa Tree. It does fine in the summer with temps into the 90's to 100's. It survived 116 a few years back. It acts like an evergreen here and I prune it when it looks a bit sparse in the winter. We have lows of 30 degrees or so for short periods. It's very happy today. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

@@WhatPlantisthatPaulmy night blooming jasmine popped it's very first blooms this November 2023. I bought it as a cutting with roots around July of 2023. So far I can't whiff a fragrance of it perhaps it will take time for it to release it's invigorating scent

I think it will die up there. I live in zone 9b and if I remember correctly, this plant can't live much below freezing.

Just grow it in pots and trim it back HARD before you store it indoors .

Sorry if I missed it but can these be potted and if so in what type of container?
@WhatPlantisthatPaul
@WhatPlantisthatPaul 3 года назад
I think it would do fine in a pot with well draining soil. It will probably get big in time and root bound. My plant is quite large and I cut it down to about 4 feet once per year.
@Misslou2425
@Misslou2425 2 года назад
Where did you get this particular one from, please?
@WhatPlantisthatPaul
@WhatPlantisthatPaul 2 года назад
I found it at Home Depot or Lowes around 8 years ago. I have never seen it again at any nursery. You can try to order it at the stores I listed above, sometimes they can track down hard to find plants.
