The Secret to Get Your Winter Jasmine Polyantnum to bloom every year indoors.
Buy Your Own White Jasmine Polyanthum Here: geni.us/Jasmin...
In this video, I want to share with you the secret to getting your Winter Jasmin to flower abundantly every year as a houseplant.
After my last video, I had quite a few people tell me that they can’t get their Jasmin to flower after the first year..
So stay tuned because there are two very important things that you MUST do in order to firstly get your jasmine polyanthum to flower again but also to flower well with lots and lots of beautiful sweet-smelling flowers indoors. So stay tuned and I will reveal all..
Some people will buy a jasmine polyanthum and it will flower that year and smell amazing but then never flower again so they just throw it away. That’s a real shame because they are amazing plants that offer such amazing displays every year together with the most amazing scent, especially when you have plenty of flowers.
I have had quite a few people contact me after my last Jasmin video asking about this issue so here is my tips to getting the most from your winter Jasmin.
Firstly you should prune after flowering in late spring, remove the old dead flowers and cut back the stems, at this point if you keep it cool enough you might get a second flowering which is a bonus!
Now the next thing I do is put it outside for the summer and autumn period so most of the time it will be outside in its pot, place it somewhere that will get some direct sun for a period of time but not full sun all day because that will fry it, especially if you live in a hot part of the world in which case give it some morning sun.
So just water it regularly throughout the summer and let it grow away with an occasional feed of diluted plant food, say half strength, as it grows it will get quite straggly as it’s a climber it puts out shoots, if you prune these shoots back every so often what will happen is it will split off and produce two more shoots, so if you keep doing this over the summer you will have more and more offshoots, each of these will eventually create flower buds in late autumn so the more shoots you prune back in the summer the more flowers you will have in the summer, that’s why if you ever see a well clipped climbing Jasmin in a garden it will be full of flowers! So you can prune your Jasmin until the autumn but be sure to stop pruning around October time in the UK which is out autumn.
So after the pruning the next crucial thing that your Jasmin MUST have is a period of cold temperature in late autumn, so this would be around 10 Celsius or 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and not for a day or two, it needs a few months of this temperature to stimulate the production of the flower buds.
So in the UK I leave my Jasmine outside until late Autumn when the temps are around 10c and bring it inside before any frosts because we don’t want it to get frosted, but even when I bring it in I leave it in my back porch which will still have low night-time temps throughout the winter and so it will be protected from the frosts but will still be kept in cool temps from October until it flowers in March, so if you have an unheated area of your house that is cool or a garage with windows so it still gets light then this would be a good place to keep it, then it will produce the flower buds from all the pruned offshoots over the summer and come late February early March you will get an amazing display of flowers if you want them to last the longest try to keep it somewhere cool, but if you just want to enjoy the flowers and the scent you can bring it inside the house for the flowering period but be aware that the flowers may last less time in a warm environment.

My container star jasmine is now almost 6ft tall and about 2ft wide. I hope youve since made a video on how to prune it back because it grew 5 feet last summer and want it to remain in the same very large container. Therefore I shall have to prune it back this spring after flowering

It sounds quite happy, the more you prune the more flower spikes you will get so go to town!

Yes, trimming back will actually create more dense growth which will have more flower buds on. Thanks for your comment.

Great. Haven't got my jasmine yet - I will get one. We are cold here in this area in Winter although not very wet and dark so it really would be nice to have. I will have to adapt it a little to your guidelines - no frost here so it could probably stay out longer but I think it would have to come in pretty early before the Summer months as the heat would be too much. They are everywhere in the gardens of the Alhambra but there is a microclimate and of course there is not one here 👍

Hi Andy I wanted to ask about how much percent humidity this plant needs when indoors for winter?. I have one of those metres that tell you how much humidity is in the air
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks Год назад
I don't think humidity is too much of an issue for this plant, I don't use any additional humidity and it's never looking dray, as long as it's watered well and not kept close to a heat source then it should be fine for the few months it stays indoors. My house sits around 58 - 60% for reference.

They are quite hardy and will be happy enough in both conditions as long as it isn't deep shade, the sunny spot would be preferred I would say.

@HouseplantHacks

The grower will give them the light and heat to get them to flower when they are ready to be sold so they will often be flowering at different times when at the store.

You can prune it now but maybe you wont get flowers this year, but better to make a more compact plant for more flowrs next year. Good luck.

I live in Texas, How much sun does it need in the summer? Would it be better on a patio with indirect sun or morning sun? Would it be ok near a indoor window without direct sun?
@HouseplantHacks

I imagine the Texas summer sun might scortch the leaves so early morning sun, indirect sun as you say or late afteroon sun would probably be best and plenty of water.

They need a period of cool temperature in the autum to set the flower buds for the following spring, so if you live in a country where it doesn't really get that cold from season to season then that might be the reason.

Hi Andy, I got so inspired by this videos on this topic that I bought a polyanthum myself. I bought it in full buds but I in this first week I can tell the buds are drying up. Do you have any tips on how to prevent is spreading? I am keeping it withing a group of plants under a growlight and with a humidifier near to it. Thanks on forehand, Emillio
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks Год назад
They tend to do this if they are drying out too much, if the soil quality isn’t great from the grower sometimes its hard to get enough water to the roots, water can fall down the sides of the pot and out the bottom. Maybe try putting it in the sink and watering well but gently, let it sit for a while and then water again. Once you are sure all the soil is well watered all the way through place it somewhere in a bright location and see how it goes. Good luck and let me know how you get on. 🤞

@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 года назад
It depends on where you live, if you don't get much natural sunlight in the winter then try to give them, as much light as possible close to a window if you live in a hot country that is still hot in winter then not so much.

I'm back to comment on my jasmin polyanthums (4) which I have indoors at the moment after being outside this summer (I'm in Montreal, Canada). So as of now, there are no buds. Just the long vines. Should i give up hope that I'll get flowers this winter? I never cut it back btw :(
@HouseplantHacks

There should be buds by now I would say, did it get cold enough before you brought it inside? It needs an initial cold period to tell it to make buds.

@@HouseplantHacks I'm in Canada, zone 5. I had them outside until early September. I don't think it got cold enough, to 10-15c overnight? Maybe a bit. But right now they're just long and leggy and no buds. I am so disappointed! SHould I just wait a month or so and then give them a hard prune and see what this year brings? Or just let them continue being a bushy mess?

Then something is not ideal, sometimes they need a period of cool temperature to activate dormancy before the next flower cycle.
