Matt Allen discusses the impact of moon phase on night fishing for bass. He offers tips to help you identify the best nights to fish around both the full and new moon.
Matt I kept stumbling across your videos, and after was always being impressed with the quality and breadth of great material you cover I subscribed. Love this channel, can't wait for some new vids
Basically what happens is that other smaller organisms like phylum and ciliates, phytoplankton, small fish, water insect ect.. ALL have their life cycles peaking during full and new moons. Larger peaks are statistically found during new moons. (hatching) so basically whats happening is that during full and new moons the activity in the water is at its highest level. Bass are turned on to feed and when it sees your lure its presentation looks more natural. any other questions feel free to ask
Damn man! I watched your vid a little while ago before a night comp I did. Well, last week was our new moon and I fished during the day but with-in your theory of 3 before and 3 after and I caught the biggest bag I've ever caught on this lake in such a short period. Great info man. Keep up the good work. P.S. all fish were released.
You can buy a $30 fishing wrist watch called the Casio Pathfinder Fishing Timer that will actually figure out what is the best time to put the bait in the water by calculating the moon phase, sunrise, and sunset for you. It also comes with a vibrating hourly signal and vibrating alarm so only you know when it is the best time to put the bait in the water if you are in a big fishing group. lol.
Hey guys, I watch a ton of your videos and have gained a lot of skill in making good choices on the time I have on the water. I looked up fishing around the full moon and this video came up. Now this is pretty old so I'm guessing you have more to share since then. I requesting a new video on fishing around the full moon in the daytime, about a week before and after. My son works night shift with the local police department and with two kids and his new friends. His fishing time is limited, So, I would like to be able to take him out and catch a few, intentionally, lol.I think a lot of viewers could appreciate your help.
If anyone would like to know why bass as well as other predatory fish feed on full/new moons I will give you the scientific reasons why. Also for tacticalbassin I watch your videos a lot and maybe even you can learn something. being a graduated bio major I have taken many courses on relating to aquatic biology. So sums things up quickly, the average person will say, "oh the bass just have an internal clock and they just know to feed on certain times" WRONG. It is called the circadian rhythm. >>
@TacticalBassin yours and tims videos are sooooo on point ! You guys get into every detail! I'm going out tonight to my favorite spot! Last time we fished there the 2 friends I took fishing caught 5's and I broke off a tank! 😎🎣 keep up the good work guys ! P.s. I would love to come fish clear lake with you guys sometime 👌🏻💯😎
Concerning clear water under a full moon ( or bright enough to cause hard shadows) do the bass use those edges of light to ambush prey like they sometimes do during the day?
I’m TIME TRIPPING. DAMN YOU WERE YOUNG IN THIS VIDEO. STAY HEALTHY STAY AWARE STAY COVERED UP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. I’M THINKING YOU ARE IN YOUR 20’s. EARLY 20’s. I was also watching some old DOUG HANNON VIDS. I’M GOING ON 70 😉👍🏻. I’m saying you’re 22 in this video.
this has been the opposite for me. I'm fishing a small pond that holds some 6 and 7lb and there hasn't been any strong rain in like four or five months. so the water lever has dropped about 7 foot or more and the water was super murky and now it's super clear. I've been going on full moon nights so I can see where I'm throwing and I'd figured they be able to see the bait better. and it's proven me right because I broke my PB a few nights ago with a 6.48lb on a zman swimmerz with a underspin bladed hook. I'm definitely gonna take these tips tho for when I start going to the lakes this winter.
As always.. Best videos and subject matter on fishing over any other RU-vidr. Basic question : local medium size pond slowly being drained with plenty 4-5 lb bass and some 7-8lb also. Nighttime fishing currently - what would you toss as your 1-2 baits ? BTW - have a couple custom baits I created that I think would be deadly near Rattlesnake Island. If your interested, I can send them to you free of charge.
Thanks Bud! I'm always open minded :-) If the fish are willing to come up throw a slammer, if not slow fishing the jig or worm will get it done for sure.
Question: you may or may not be able to answer... just throwin' it out there... When fishing at night, if you're wearing a head lamp and keeping the light focused on your lure as you retrieve it, do the bass get spooked out of biting from the light/light movement?
Well, I don't fish at night but 3 days before and 3 days after the full moon is common old school knowledge even for day fishermen, but as common as it is, I have never in my 65 years done well during the full moon period in our natural lakes. From 3 days ahead of the new moon on up to +- 40% waxing are my most productive days. Never heard of the dark water vs stained water theory tho, but that may be because here in central Fl there are no clear waters. All the natural lakes are tannin stained, so I would have no way to compare. Also, for the 1st 30 of my 65 years, I fished almost exclusively in central Florida's many phosphate pits, and I never considered the moon because we always caught fish. I didn't know how lucky I was until the big corporations bought it all up, Mosaic etc..., and banned public access. But the best advice you gave was basically, just go fishin' when you can.
I appreciate the disclaimer. I'm definitely one of those guys that gets out whenever he can get out, but it's only once every couple weeks. I have a daughter that's just under a year old and I try to spend as much time with her as possible. But some days, she's in bed for the night at 7pm and I head out to my nearest lake to fish up to an hour into the night or more if I'm lucky enough for it to occur on the weekend. I've enjoyed all of your videos but decided to skip this one as suggested.

How quickly are you fishing at night? Have you considered CREEPING and I mean so slowly tha tyou're barely even turning the handle. This can make a difference when the going gets tough!
