Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, is a late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. It was hosted by Jools Holland and David Sanborn, and featured Marcus Miller as musical director. Guests included acts such as Sonny Rollins, Shinehead, Sister Carol, Sonic Youth, Joe Sample, Slim Gaillard, Pere Ubu, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. In addition, vintage clips of jazz legends like Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday were also featured. The show also featured a house band of Omar Hakim (drums), Marcus Miller (bass), Philippe Saisse (keys), David Sanborn (sax), Hiram Bullock (guitar), and Jools Holland (piano). The show often allowed its guests ample time to explain the origins of their sound, meaning of songs, etc. It also provided a national audience for lesser known acts (like Arto Lindsay's band The Ambitious Lovers). Hal Willner was the music coordinator, responsible for the interesting musical mix-and-matching that took place on the show.

Simply the best pure American popular music show ever broadcast. This show highlighted every aspect of musical creativity and brilliantly broke down the barriers of the genres to showcase the creative potential of the human spirit.

Nobody mentions him (not even in the above notes) but the amazing bass player in this band is TOM BARNEY. A great eclectic bass player, one of my favorites.

Loved this show. Sanborn got people to step out of their genres with great results…. I remember in an interview he said the sponsors kept asking him, “Dave, what’s the demographic?” “People who like music!”

the show is absolutely wonderful...cant get enough...but...jools attempt at comedy is...well...awful...dig the other programme at the bbc,,before i was aware of this one...but cmon jools...less babbling will suit you nicely.rgds.

JOHN SAMUELSON That's Jool's style taken with a pinch of salt it is what it is! He was obviously successful with it considering how long the show ran. Each to his own I guess.
@johnsamuelson4214
@johnsamuelson4214 9 лет назад
every one has its view..but on the bbc show,he cut the comedy for good,just sticking to presentation of numbers and a few interviews.anyhow,i think the late music programme was far better than the bbc one,which for me is too"eclectic"to put it someway..with lots of mainstream bands that are worthless..its my opinion,of course..regards.

@@johnsamuelson4214 Eclectic isn't the problem , it's way too many pretty boy, band of the week, Brit garage bands with one not very interesting not really a hit song and style and very expensive wardrobe and haircuts and not much talent.

I used to love this show, but the musical choices were too ececltic/weird for the time to get a big rating. It would have lasted longer if it aired in the 70's. Besides, 4 minutes plus before any music is no way to start a music show...

Is it just me or does Santana need to turn down? He seems to always be louder than everybody else combined. Give me Sanborn's Parkeresque melody over Shorter's Dolphy-like screeching any day.
