Those old houses were built to impress guests with nice front elevations, entrance halls & reception rooms. But move further back and you’ll find rough brickwork, no fancy cornices & dados, and no lincrusta wallpaper. Some of those posh Georgian terraces in the richest parts of London have re-used old ship’s timbers in the roof. And whilst modern houses seem bland & cheap, they are actually designed to much better standards in respect of such things as foundations, structural stability, resistance to wind loadings, insulation, fire resistance, etc.. What is worse is workmanship, with the old apprenticeship system having been replaced by ‘qualifications’ from some training centre or other.
@Benzknees
@Benzknees 4 года назад
Mark Sesum - True, but personal integrity aside, a long apprenticeship usually provided a lot of varied, real world experience and problem solving next to a time served craftsman, which training centre courses cannot hope to replicate. .
@Mark1024MAK
@Mark1024MAK 4 года назад
Benzknees - sorry, I have to disagree with you on most points. We have far better technology now, so can design buildings that will meet the relevant standards but at minimum cost. In the past the standards were not as comprehensive as now. But for the most part, structures and buildings were well made, often being slightly over engineered. The quality is defined by what the customer wants and the tradesmen having a pride in the job. Hence in older buildings it is true that the frontage and inside the areas that visitors and guests were invited into, and where the owner would spend most of their time were finished out much nicer than the other areas. Because that was what the buyers wanted. You can’t blame the building or the builders for that. If you ever watch a documentary on the state of modern houses, be sure to have a pen and pad ready to record the hundreds of snagging items that can be found per property. Including some big fails where they have not complied with the required standards. And these are new houses being build by big construction companies. And of course, most modern houses are built to the minimum size that they can get away with (to meet the legally required minimum and no larger). Because that generates the maximum profit for the construction company.
@Benzknees
@Benzknees 4 года назад
Mark 1024MAK - That’s what I said, modern houses are well designed but have poor workmanship. I’m a building surveyor and have investigated building defects in thousands of houses over a period of 30+ years. I’ve seen at first hand all the common faults that come up time and time again on both old and new housing.

So since you're a Londoner now, do you enjoy living there? With stuff to do apart from work if you have any other activities etc? Let me know if you can cause I'm looking into moving in from Greece I love the city. My kind of cities actually. :)

Great video Thomas, kool seeing your work on the other side of the world, very nice workmanship in that bldg you had a call too. I have to ask, what the hell are those bloody crooked lines I see all over the road ways when you drive around, the ones that run near the side of the road, they are not everywhere, just certain areas.Keep up the great videos, by the way you are driving on the wrong side of the road!...

Dude I have to ask. What's that attached to the go-pro when you're carrying it? I always catch a glimpse in a mirror when you pass one. Sad times indeed my friend. Houses and blocks of flats get erected quicker than my love life. It pains me to see a beautiful victorian apartment divided into flats. You can see the huge detailed cornice and coving disapearing behind cheep stud walls where a large room has been been split into smaller rooms :'( how people must have once lived in these huge homes amazes me. Looking forward to Monday sir!
