Damned scary, considering Tom Parker, the guy uttering those words, is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of Alabama. I think he unintentionally outed himself there - he thinks our government is, or should be, a theocracy.
Judges are not politicians, they just interpret and apply the laws. The case was a lawsuit between private citizens which sued the fertility clinic that destroyed their embryos. The problem was not the ruling per se, but the reason the judges used, which had unexpected ramifications. If they had considered the embryos property, or even undeveloped human life, nothing would have happened. Could they? Are that state's laws updated as to include modern fertility technology? How do the constitution and laws define an embryo: property, small babies, do they even mention them? The judges did not made a medical decision nor gave medical advice - they made a ruling favoring parents-to-be who lost the embryos they had taken so much effort (and money!) to create. Besides of their personal convictions, do you know whether the judges have laws for such kind of events, or had to resource to the available ones?
@MariaMartinez-researcher a woman becoming pregnant does not necessarily mean that she will give birth. Mother Nature is not in a woman's control. Miscarriage happens and you don't have any control over that

So I think you're onto the real issue - when someone is negligent in protecting life bearing capable material (embryo, egg and sperm) for which people paid them to do - how do you hold them accountable. And then, at the same time, protect those who choose not to use them to no longer maintain them. I think it boils down to malicious intent or gross negligence against the wishes of the rightful owners of said property.
@artinez-researcher . two different issues....if money is the problem like you stated they could sue the company for the money. this accident will put these workers in prison for murder. a female body has over hundreds of thousands of eggs. go to many different locations to freeze your embryos just in case.
Science and it's "Laws" aren't a certifiable proof of anything! Any "Scientific Law" can be debunked at any moment with newly discovered proofs. Only (GOD) IS ABSOLUTE TRUTH. WITHOUT (GOD), NO "science". No consciousness! Everything FAILS!

I was listening to a podcast that made a good point. Embryos are not children. You can freeze embryos. But you cannot freeze children. You can practice your religion. But don't force your religion on others.

In response to the Alabama State Supreme court justice saying that, "...God created government" makes as much sense as "Embryos are children". That judge has no business putting his personal religious beliefs above the law that he's supposed to support. What ever happened to separation of Church and State? University of Georgia is one of the most affordable public prestigious schools we have on the east coast. There are a bunch of private ivy league schools in the north, but UGA is supposed to be a very prestigious school to go to. I wish there was more safety around this student and her community.

Perhaps IVF providers and consumers have approached the question of "life" too casually. I appreciate Alabama Supreme Court's ruling in that it forces activists to actually make an argument for why people should be allowed to experiment with and monetize human embryos.

Everyone’s missing the point here. The real questions hear are: 1. Why is it impossible for so many women to get pregnant. 2. How many women are there in this country suffering from this terrible ordeal. It makes you wonder if there is something more sinister happening here.
If I had to make a list of states I would *never* live in, Alabama would be at the top of the list. I feel sorry for anybody who lives there that wants out but can't for whatever reason.
