Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera ft. Henk Poort - Vocal Coach Reaction & Analysis (YOSC) 

Henk was one of Floor's hero's when she grew up. He was the best 'Phantom' Loyd Webber ever heard. You know, the one who created the Phantom.

They both participated in a Dutch show, called 'Beste Zangers' in 2019. No competition, just an entertainment show, that was filmed on Ibiza, where known singers sing each other's songs, or songs, that personally have meaning to one of the other participants. Henk was kind of an idol, when she grew up in the Netherlands. He is one of Webber's favorite phantoms, having been it in Netherlands for many years. He did the growling as a surprise/tribute to Floors Nightwish metal background at 'Beste Zangers', and she had a huge surprise smile on her face to that, after they only had one rehearsal..,without his growl. A condition at Beste Zangers for him to sing with her was, that one day he might sing it with NW, which was granted by Floor, and NW. But then, the pandemic happened. So I guess, singing with NW, promise fulfilled, there is the growling.

Well...Henk is a Dutch Phantom (Henk Poort is a Dutch singer born in 1956. Poort's major roles include Erik "the Phantom" in the Dutch version of The Phantom of the Opera and Jean Valjean in the first staging of the Dutch version of Les Misérables in the late 1990s. He also sang as one of the "17 Valjeans" at Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert.). This promise was made in Beste Zangers TV show , that he will sing this song with Floor and Nightwish, when they come to the Netherlands. And this song was a surprise to the fans. Nightwish performed this song last time 17 years ago with Tarja, and now the circle is complete... And that Crowd Roar, when Henk walked on stage, wearing Official "Nightwish Family" T-shirt, but that Floor's last note... it was insane 11 sec. This performance was absolutely electrifying ❤‍🔥!!!!! In The Netherlands we have a TV show "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers). In every season a couple of famous Dutch artists come together and sing songs to each other which have a meaning to them. The last episode is a duet one. In the 2019 season Floor and Henk were both part of it. Floor knew Henk from her youth as he was the Dutch Phantom for years (and according to A.L. Webber, the best) and she was a fan of him. He is very much loved in my country. For the duet episode Floor asked Henk if he would like to do the Phantom with her. Henk said yes on one condition that when NW would come to Amsterdam in 2020 they would sing it with the band. Floor and NW said YES!! The duet hit like a bomb and gained a lot of fans for Floor as The Netherlands is not a metal country. Worth checking out this duet! (NW had done this song years ago with their first singer Tarja Turunen but never since). Due to Covid it was delayed for 2 years but finally in Nov last year they fulfilled their promise. Alas, I wasn't there but the fans who were there said it was still a complete surprise as it was not on the setlist. And you can hear the roar as Floor started singing and Henk came on stage.

Lots to unpack here. Lots of folks have given you the Floor/Henk backstory. One thing to note is that the Beste Zangers/solo show performance is more musical theater in tone. Floor is using less of a rounded vowel placements in some spots and so the performance overall has a brighter tone and the musical arrangement is still rock oriented but less heavy. In this performance they are using the original Nightwish arrangement that was written for their first singer Tarja who was a more operatic singer then Floor so the pacing is slower and more dramatic. Hi, thank you for an entertaining reaction! This performance will always be very special for me because I was one of the 17000 people in the audience. It was my first time seeing them live after being a fan of them for 20+ years. And this song in particular made it even more special since it was the first time in 17 years that they performed it last time. Henk Poort is indeed a musical theatre legend in the Netherlands. He has played the phantom countless times and he is one of Andrew Lloyd Webbers favorites for the role. The story behind this performance is also special. It started with Floor being a fan of Henk Poort when she was just a girl. She saw a performance of POTO where Henk played the phantom and she LOVED it. Ahe even had his picture on the wall in her room. Many years layer Floor gets approached to do a TV show in Holland called “beste zangers”. Its a show where fanous singers take turns to do covers of each others work and of other famous songs. Every night also features one of the participants, telling a bit of their story. Floor initially turned it down, but somehow she learned that Henk was going to participate and she immediately called the producers and said that she wanted to do it after all. Then they did the show and Floor approached Henk and asked is they could do POTO on the show, and he agreed on the condition that they would reprise their performance on stage with Nightwish. She agreed and the result is what you just witnessed. My suggestion for you next Nightwish song would be Storytime or Romanticide from Wacken 2013.

I was there, it was epic❣️ I was bouncing up and down when I realized they were doing this! So great hearing them do the Phantom again with the official Dutch Phantom! It was a surprise I sort of counted on because it was promised in Beste Zangers 2019.

Great reaction and analysis to this lovely performance. It is hard to believe that she did this performance last year barely a month after her successful breast cancer surgery. What an amazing woman. She used her cancer to urge women to do their routine mamograms so that they too can be diagnosed early, so they can take care of any problems before the tumor can spread. Floor, Henk, and the entire Nightwish band were incredible. Thank you for this.

For those who don't know Floor. 8 weeks before she was diagnosed with breast cancer! Had a surgery and fortunately was cancer free. And 2 or 3 weeks later back on stage and hardly touring again. Having some radiation later on. What an emotional and physical ride .

Henk Poort was the official Phantom in the Dutch production in the early '90's. He was originally an Opera singer who later switched to musical. Of course he is much older now so his voice changed since these day's And for the Phantom that he did with Floor in "Beste Zangers" 2019. He specially took lessons in singing with distortion then, because he had never done that before.

I'm just gonna say it: Without Henk Poort being the Phantom, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite Phantom to boot, we would not have Floor Jansen as a singer. Like Tuomas, if Floor hadn't become a singer, she would have become a marine biologist -- and while I have no doubt Floor would have been successful doing that, she is giving so much more to the world with her singing talent. She, like Henk, like Tuomas, is once-in-a-generation talent -- and I have no doubt that long after my generation has returned to the primal state, as Dr. Dawkins would say, people will still be reacting to and watching Floor perform. And, I find it especially fitting that this performance comes full circle, not just for Henk and Floor -- a promise made now a promise kept -- but for Nightwish, which hadn't performed Phantom of the Opera since Tarja was the lead vocalist. In a way, this is something I think Tuomas always wanted to do, but still had to deal with the ghosts of the past, and all that entailed. Now, though, with this performance, I think those ghosts can finally be laid to rest and given peace, because Tuomas' arrangement here is top-notch, and his little accents from the keyboards gives this song the spice and flavor a song like the Phantom of the Opera needs. And given that Floor's birthday was 3 days ago, this is, I think, a very special birthday present from Floor to the Nightwish Army, and especially since Floor is still recovering from dealing with cancer. She is fast becoming just as resilient as Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden is, and I love her for that! Edit: Because I'm a chess nerd, and this fits: Queen to D6. Checkmate. 😂 And, she held that D6 for 11 seconds!

Andrew Lloyd Weber has said Henk was his favorite Phantom ...... He is definitely legit for the part...... And well, Floor is simply stunning. The end part, with the amazing onsets, and then of course the straight tone D6 held for a full 12 seconds is just ridiculous.

Apart from appearing in Dutch versions of famous musicals, Henk is also a well known opera singer. The grit is not done for classical singers, but he did that the first time in the tv show Beste Zangers when singing this song with Floor as hommage to the metal genre, and ever since when they performed this song.

Apparently the fans have told you already how Henk, one of the original Phantoms, switched to distorted vocals to accommodate the Metal version of the aria, and do right by the prowess of Queen Floor, which he was best positioned to observe. In this Live rendition, Henk does more low "beast" vocals I had ever imagined him capable of, transforming the version into one to remember. And Floor is just who she is. :]

That was about 11 1/2 seconds. Pretty crazy. Even Tarja the original singer held it about 5 1/2. In fairness when Tarja sang this it was a strictly more classical style that actually make it sound like an opera rather than musical theatre. So the end part was very classical and vibrato. Vs holding a straight tone note. But still floor held it just over double the length of time.

Henk Poort has a commanding presence...He's like that boss or coach or leader that you want to do well for, not because you're intimidated by him (well, maybe a little) but because you just want this guy to have a favorable opinion of you...I've always wondered: the last quarter of this song, did he normally have that harder tone in this part, or did he ramp up the rock edge a little more for this occasion?
