The last "Laudato Si" before the first "Ad Astra" - where she transitions from the light and sonorous tone, and slides down into a more powerful tone just gives me the absolute chills every time. Btw, the woman quoting the Shakespeare is Tuomas' wife, Johanna Kurkela. And for me, she had one of the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. This is a masterpiece of a song. Floor's voice is pushed to it's limits like no other Nightwish song has done. The male voice is Troy, the guy that plays the Uillean pipes, flutes, bazouki and pretty much anything that makes a noise when you hit, blow or pluck it. You might have seen him in the "How's the Heart" acoustic video with Floor? The spoken piece is performed by your doppelganger Johanna, Tuomas's wife. At some point I hope you heck her out singing with Auri, which includes Troy and Tuomas.

Yes, watching this live is a must. I wouldn't say this is one of my favourite Nightwish songs, but one thing I love is that they (Tuomas especially) are a bunch of science nerds like me. This song takes me back to my college days in July 1994 when the world was captivated by the impact of comet Shoemaker-Levy-9 into Jupiter. Eugene Shoemaker, along with his wife Carolyn and David Levy were all household names in the mid 1990s.

In an interview Floor said that this song is particularly "challenging". The first part with its unusual rythm needs a ton of breath control . The first tries of the last part "Laudato si..." were "good enough" but Floor spent hours trying to improve her performance and the final result, IMHO, is very impactful. She is a very talented singer but behind her outstanding performances there is also a lot of hard work

Hi, I'm glad you came back to Nightwish with this great reaction, after your "hectic" weekend :) You're one of the few reactors who "caught" the 2nd guitar, namely Troy using an e-bow for those long tones, covering ascending and descending the whole spectrum. Troy's voice is again the one you noticed in the chorus, although in this studio version Marco's and Floor's voices are also present there, participating together in the harmony in the background. This song, dedicated to the scientist Eugene Shoemaker, is not the first of its kind for Nightwish. In the previous album ("Endless Forms Most Beautiful" 2015), they have a song dedicated to Carl Sagan, the famous American scientist - unfortunately I don't know if there is a live version for "Sagan", a superb and uplifting song. As you also noticed in this reaction, their last album "Human :||: Nature" from 2020 excels in the refinement of the balance between "metal" and "symphonic", which shows in my opinion that they have reached a high level of artistic maturity. Being released in April 2020, that is, right at the beginning of the lockdown, we had to wait 2 years to have quality live recordings with the public - with one exception, "How's The Heart", performed in 2020 in the acoustic version in the " Planet Rock" studio by Floor and Troy. This could be a nice step forward in your exploration, and become your new favorite Nightwish song... :)

It's just wonderful that there are musicians and artists who understand the importance of science and scientists, and can make music that brings together art and science in a tribute to the human spirit. The ending of this always makes me cry, just to know that there are so many other people who 'get it'.

I've heard this song live three times, each time just a few feet away from Floor...I'll put it this way...from that distance, the end of this song live is something I most closely associate with a religious experience.. .it's not just Floor's singing, it's also her incredible presence and gestures.

I think you would have to have ears of stone not to be moved by this. Tears me up every time I hear it. Nightwish always give the emotions a workout.

Solar eclipse - you have already done 'Sleeping Sun' - that's about a solar eclipse! Shoemaker - you are right - It is a masterpiece. When Nightwish released the new Human Nature album, along with some studio videos, Floor asked her fans which song we were most excited to see live - and one 'Shoemaker' were the most requested. Floor told us that It is a pretty hard one to sing, because of the quick changes, and not much time to breathe - and she should rehearse the opera part some more. About the opera part - Floor told - when Tuomas and her recorded it, in the studio, she did a lot of versions before they were satisfied. But on her way home to Sweden, she didn't have the right gut feeling. So Floor went into her home studio, rehearsed some more, added the chorus part - and then recorded a new ending. She sent it to Tuomas..... and this is the ending you hear on the song. Floor is a perfectionist that instinctly knows exactly what to add, to make a song extraordinary. Her and Tuomas are unbelievable in creating sublime art.

Shoemaker was my very first Nightwish song. I was really into theExpanse scifi show at that time . On a fan page another fan suggested I listen to this. I was blown aw@y. Next up I found Ghost Love Score and I was hooked! 72 yrs old at the time, I had never liked metal. This was so different. This was story telling using the emotions of music. Yes, that final part where she sings Laudate...goosebumps from my spine towards my ankles. Not to mention the tears. It is so emotional. As already suggested by another person, please check out "The greatest show on earth" from Nightwish. The version with Richard Dawson on stage. It is a song about life and mankind. Read the lyrics beforehand. There is a story to tell. It will blow your mind. Indeed the greatest show on earth.....

Tuomas the keyboard player who writes 95% of these songs is an empath and a poet an amazing story writter and reader and is very educated with words you don't normally find in songs. That was Troy the British member you heard singing with Floor Troy is a multi instrumentalist with the use of his backing vocals, use of the Irish bagpipes, use of his short and long Flute like pipes and various classical guitars and his use of an electric guitar using his E-bow devices that vibrates the strings creating this cello sounding sound. Johanna who is not a Nightwish member is Tuomas's wife read the Shakespear words, is also a singer with a sweet unique childlike vocal has performed for some of Tuomas other projects and all three Tuomas, Johanna and Troy are in a trio group called Auri. Worth a looksee.

Troy was the male vocalist. He. Is also playing the e-bow and guitar in the interlude. You most definitely need to do a reaction to this song live! Watching Floor just gives you chills when she sings the outro.

The spoken word section, by Tuomas's wife Johana Kurkela, is the quote inscribed on the capsule containing Eugene Shoemaker's ashes on the moon. Not only a great tribute to Eugene Shoemaker but also an ode to humanities need to explore and push out into space.

A few others have mentioned it, the Live version at Hellfest (or Pinkpop). Especially at the end...chills! Chills!!! And yes, that is Troy on the guitar with his e-bow. I love when he does this.

Dulcimer is the least of Tuomas' great lyrics. I know of no other who would write lyrics about "returning swans and sedulous mice" for example. As you mentioned opera house I should mention that the 2nd CD of this double album (Human Nature) is a whole suite of mainly orchestral work. If you liked the end of Shoemaker I recommend Ad Astra from that disc - but the live version from Hellfest is unbelievable. It has a long Carl Sagan quote over the music as the band take their bows (during which there is a one minute video blackout, which really doesn't matter). Then the band steps back in a line, Floor steps up to the mic and, well I'll just say when she opened her mouth the first time I saw the performance, I had to hold on to my chair arms or I would have fallen off. That performance of Ad Astra at Hellfest still has much the same effect now, even though I have seen them perform it live in person at Wembley.

The chorus is Troy, Marko and Floor all together in harmony. Definitely go for the live performance too. And yep Floor pulled it off live of course. lol So many great songs on this album. I think you'd like them all. Oh and I just thought of one you can do for Floor. It's a Nightwish song but there's a video of her performing it with Troy playing acoustic guitar, it's so good. It's called How's The Heart. I believe Tuomas wrote it for her after she had her first child. You'll find it under How's The Heart acoustic (Planet Rock acoustic session)

Yes, I agree with you, a symphonic orchestra in a concert hall would do Tuomas's compositions honour - and of course, a great orchestra in London has made the orchestral parts on recent Nightwish albums. But I can imagine the celli or cello's doing the guitar part, the violins and wood section the keyboards etc.

Troy is the lead male singer in the chorus. He's their multi-instrumentalist who plays the whistles, bagpipes, bouzouki and guitar. Marko is the guy with the awesome beard. When listening to the chorus, Troy is panned equally as lead, while Marko is left and Floor is panned right. That eerie sound you're hearing is Troy playing his guitar with an EBow. BTW, the opening instrument was a hammered dulcimer.

If you like a good switch up you should listen to ‘Pan’ from the same album. The lyric videos are better as they still have Marko playing and singing which I’m sorry to say just makes them better IMHO. (Although i believe it is Troy doing backing vocals here) ‘Endlessness’ is also amazing from this album. There is only the lyric video as Marko takes the lead vocal and he left before it could be performed live.

Floor is so much focused when she do this operatic part live. The spoken part did Tuomas' wife Johanna Kurkela. She has long red hair, but a bit darker red than you. She, Tuomas and Troy has an amazing band called Auri. And Johanna also sings in the band Eye Of Melian.

Hey there - great reaction! It's not Tuomas (who wrote it) but Troy who is singing with Floor here and you're right, there is a second guitar, played with an ebow, on this track (also Troy). The women reciting the Shakespeare lines from Romeo and Juliet is Johanna Kurkela a tremendous Finnish singer who also happens to be married to Tuomas. It's probably worth looking up the story of Eugene Shoemaker who is the subject of the song before you react to the live version - you will get a whole lot more from the experience if you do. The speaking part is Tuomas's wife Johanna and she is a amazing singer also. She's on a band with Tuomas and Johanna and Troy. Troy plays the Flutes a d guitar. Floor did a good job on the Operactic part. The second part of the album is Amazing. Auri is the name of the band.

The first notes of the composition are played on a hammer dulcimer, so it's not just wordplay! And not just Earthrise, but "eternal Earthrise": because the Earth barely moves in the lunar sky, it's eternally hanging on the horizon when seen from Shoemaker's "grave" on the Moon. Leave it to Tuomas to get that detail right - and to throw in _Laudato Si'_ , a phrase taken from Francis of Assisi's "Canticle of the Sun", written ~1200 years ago.

When I listen to the Human :||: Nature album, this song was an instant love. The whole album is a masterpiece but this song is super special for me.

Top live performance of Shoemaker is probably from Pinkpop, 2022. Some very nice shots showing how much work needs to be done over that last vocal part as well. And yes, it's one of those very classic-style Nightwish compositions. I second someone saying it's time for Greatest SHow on Earth. But also a recommendation (for your time alone) to check All the works of nature that adorn the world, 30 min classic suite by Tuomas, or at least its finale, Ad Astra. I think it would suit your style. Still, probably not the best thing for reaction, due to length and style. Just a great thing to enjoy on your own.

I like those rapid rolling drum sounds. The singing sounds difficult but well done.
