Juilliard trained opera singer, Maggie Reneé, reacts to Nightwish - The Islander live at Tampere. 🤘🎶❤️ Nightwish is a symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen.
"The Islander" is the tenth track on symphonic metal band Nightwish’s Dark Passion Play album.
As with some of Nightwish' other songs the song is highly influenced by folk music rather than the symphonic power metal they usually play, and uses only acoustic guitars, rather than electric. It is fully acoustic, except the use of some keyboard effects and drums, though folk-inspired. Marko Hietala sings the whole song with backing vocals from Anette Olzon and Tuomas Holopainen. He also wrote all of the music for the song, unlike most others, which were written by Tuomas Holopainen. The song used guest musician Troy Donockley who is featured on several instruments.

Would love you to react to Yma Sumac, the "Peruvian Nightingale". She had IMO for the longest time the biggest range (4.5 - 5 octaves), plus best transitions until Dimash came along. And her famous double voice plus birds imitating. Got few suggestions (last one only over a minute long). These ones have been reacted to by Vocal coaches too. This is one of the few songs mainly written by Marko, Tuomas helped with the lyrics. Troy's instrument is a low whistle, the shortest one not played in this song is a tin whistle, they are traditional irish flutes. Other songs to listen with Marko as the lead singer are "While your lips are still red", "High Hopes" (Pink Floyd cover, he absolutely killed it), or "Endlessness" from the new album Human I Nature (no live video since now, and unfortunately maybe never, but a lyrics video). Marko is singing since 1985 and has another band called Tarot with his brother. I absolutely love how much Floor is happy for Marko at the end of this song.

Honestly it won’t be the same band. Even with all the bad vibes and changes with Tarja and Annette , Marco was always there. I love Floor but I thought , when Tarja left they should have just put Marco as lead vocals. This band can’t catch a break, they finally get the perfect mix and it lasts 5 years… dammit.

I think Floor's mic wasn't higher because she is the backing vocals, even though she sings some "lead" parts, it's a Marko song so he is supposed to be in the front, though maybe she could have used some more volume still. Troy's instrument is a low whistle, it's a great full sound, as opposed to tin whistle which is like a little flute and sounds thinner

I want my tears back from their Buenos Aires concert. Floor did amazing while recovering from the flu. Unleash the archers has a great lead as well. Brittany seems to blow away just about all who hear her. She does some classical as well

"I like their blend. Their voices sound really good together." Marko sounds good with everyone. He's able to find a chemistry with Tarja, Floor, and Charlotte with Delain, despite how different all their voices are. (Side note: I can't recommend listening to Delain with Marko enough. I'd start with Nothing Left or The Gathering (live version of both). Also, Hands of Gold and Tragedy Of the Commons are great for a bit different vibe)

Marko did originally intend to be an operatic tenor. Those double-necked guitars were fairly common in the 70s and 80s, but not seen so often now.

NW performed the first half of their 2021 Virtual Tour today and you might be able to catch a few songs before they get blocked. The new NW bass player from Wintersun, Jukka, is set to tour with the band for the 2021 tour. Ironically, the original NW drummer was also named Jukka. When he retired for health reasons, he called on his good friend, Kai, who was the Wintersun drummer, so now NW has two former Wintersun bandmates. Floor´s microphone was excactly as high as it should be. This song is a Marko lead song and as one of the few people on the planet, Marko had the worlds greatest female vocalist as a backup singer ;). How cool that must have been for him ;) He is an amazing singer and deserved the main spotlight on this one :)

Marko: what a voice - such a range, such a passion. Same has to be said about Floor! And the same has to be said about Tarja when she was in the band. So Nightwish always had such powerful singers. And also when Anette was the lead vocalist they were great. Don‘t understand those people who have to argue about who’s best. I love Tarja, as well as Floor. And then Marko! What else can you ask for? But back to the performance here: It is so beautiful. So much passion in Marko‘s voice. I love the folkish style of The Islander.

Maggie, Troy is playing a low whistle. It is the big brother of the Irish tin whistle but usually made of wood. It fingers the same as a tin whistle but sounds much more mellow. They come in a range of keys and can produce a two octave range.

If Nightwish wants to continue performing live, they will have to hire 3 new members. They are not going to find someone who sings so great, that plays the guitar and bass so well, and that looks so wonderfully Finish Viking out there looking for a job. They are going to have to hire a singer, a bass player and a looker (unless looks don't matter, then they might be able to replace him with just two people.)

Marco composed (maybe not this arrangement?) this b-e-a-utiful song. And that Troy's wind instrument - tin whistle I'd like to call flute - fits so well in a song about an old sailor, the islander. Wind is a familiar element to him. One Nightwish army joke goes: 'Throw an instrument at Troy, he'll play it'.

Nope, Floors mic was set just right,her vocals to form a barely perceptible background to Marco. Or Floor just kept the volume low by herself, she can do that. Personally, I feel that Marco was more important to Nightwish identity than even Floor, even if she is the front singer. Hope Nightwish can survive without him.

From beginning this song was lot poppier because it was written when Anette Olsen was the female singer between Tarja and Flor, Annette was good, but maybe not for Nightwish, she is a pop voice. The song been lot better with Floor. The official video is with Anette.

She was meant to be a background singer and that's why she was toned down. This was all about Marko in the lead. That was a "double necked". They come how you want them 6 string/12 string, 6 string/6 string for doubled tuned, 6 string /bass it's what the artist wants. They're not as prevalent as they were back in the 80 Hair Metal days

This is just my opinion but when I watch reaction videos, I would like to see reactions to videos. If I like to know some facts and pauses which cames to check these facts, I would rather check wikipedia or hear about those questions and checks afterwards. I love your reaction videos anyhow, but this is what I honestly wanted to say, I hope you don't get offended by the way I like to see reaction videos :) All the best from Finland!

for more Troy and his Irish Whistle, check out "Nemo", live at Wacken '13, and, "The Greatest Show On Earth" from this same concert. Wacken is my fave version of Nemo. love this for Marco and the Finnish crowd.

Fun fact. I didn't know what an albatross was when I was watching an episode of Hogan's Heroes (a 60's sit com, those in Europe might know it as 'A Cage Full Of Heroes') The bad guy's had a plan they called 'Operation Albatross'. Curious, I looked it up. If you just look at pictures without knowing their size, they kind of look like a cross between a seagull that took steroids and a duck, but recently I found out they have an 11 foot wingspan (3.35m) they are VERY large birds.

Told you there were weasels in the Nightwish rabbit-hole! I like weasels! That double-guitar+bass is named "The Beast". Floor's dress for this concert resembled the Finnish flag and also the DNA double-helix. 🏝️

Marco is one of the greatest artists in metal I have ever heard. Here are some more euro metal bands. Mono Inc., Marco's other band called Tarot and a kind of goth metal band called Blutengel they sing in both english and german, they have a very gothy/vampy sound. But Blutengle's latest record they did covers of their favorite 80's songs. 🏝

FYI - the part not closed-captioned where he's speaking in Finnish, he basically stops and asks the audience "hey, this is the chorus, do you know the words? Yes? Then sign along with me...." You should also watch the video made for the song; it features the second female singer for Nightwish [Anette Olzon, between Tarja and Floor, has a much softer voice than either], and the actor playing the weathered sea captain looks EXACTLY as you would expect him to from listening to this song.

@@lindacf2379 don't know, I've seen that with big well known artists, but never with small from us. In Europe even small artist have crew that sing along with them. Meybe so in us to, but I've never seen it on a video.

Hi Maggie. I love your reactions. I would suggest that you listen and react to the mastermind behind Nightwish. He made kind of a solo album and it´s his wife singing, so this is very different from the Nightwish music. Tuomas Holopainen - The last sled or A lifetime of adventures, he read Don Rosas comicbook on Scrooge McDuck and the music just appared like he says himself in an interview. They even got Don Rosa to appear in the music videos. Amazing.....
