If I remember correctly, Marco actually wrote the melody for this song. The story is, in a nutshell, that Tuomas heard Marco playing it backstage or something at some point and liked it, and when he asked about it Marco said it was just something he had been writing but that wouldn't really work for his band Tarot, and Tuomas was like "We could do it with Nightwish if you want", so Marco finished writing the music, and Tuomas wrote the lyrics, and the rest is history.

It's interesting because Marco also wrote the music for "The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove". I think it was Tuomas who said the most metal person in the band wrote the softest song on the album.

Regarding your Dad's story.... Age 66 here. I had stopped listening to music entirely for over 30 years because we were being presented with nothing but junk on the airwaves, in my humble opinion. Until I discovered Nightwish in 2008. Since then, same story as your father's! I feel like a teenager again! //// On a lighter note, there are two obligatory jokes (obligatory in that I have to tell them every time!) that go with this song...one for the official vid and one for Tampere. 1. (I guess it's a Chuck Norris type of joke) "Nightwish doesn't sit around the campfire. The campfire sits around Nightwish!" and 2. "If you try really hard you might one day be cool enough to have a long Viking braided beard. And if you try even harder you might one day be cool enough to have that beard AND be bass player for the greatest metal band in the world. But no matter how hard you try you will NEVER be cool enough to have that beard, be that bass player, AND have Floor Jansen as your BACKUP singer!"
@rikosborne1212
@rikosborne1212 3 года назад
Heh, my favorite comment I read on the original video was, "In Soviet Russia, campfire sits around you!" And yeah, as a singing bass player myself, Marko is one of my heroes, and I'm jealous of him. We're only 4 months apart in age (he's the older of us), but I seem to be completely incapable of growing a proper beard, and started losing my hair a couple decades ago. When I was 30 I had gotten my hair to shoulder length, but then a friend took a photo of me from behind. And in that photo, there was this big bald spot in the middle of all that thick, long hair. I decided, "That just looks stupid" and cut it all off.

@@rikosborne1212 BWAHAHA on the "Soviet Russia" joke and BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! on the bald spot joke! That's EXACTLY what happened to me! I was a "hippie" of the 60's with long hair. Then at the ripe old age of 29 in 1983, I asked my neighbor to help me lift a big double picture window into the rough opening on my house I was building. My wife took our picture from behind. It was an old chemical emulsion film camera (because I'm a dinosaur), so I didn't get the film developed for over a year. When I finally saw it, I was, like, oh yeah I remember this. There's Tim (my neighbor). Who the f*** is this guy? I thought I helped him that day??? And that wasn't a joke at the time! I seriously did no recognize me with the big shiny pink monk's cap of bare skin. Same as you said, that was it! Nowadays I shave it all with blade and Barbasol foam! LOL!

Thank You again Tank! Story behind the song! (I just translated this to English) (C) Tuomas Holopainen: " I would have been willing to pick this up from the Dark Passion Play album as a single, if the singer hadn’t just changed( Tarja ----> Anette 2006). A Celtic song that Marko played a couple of years before, in the back room. Saying it would properly not sit for his band, Tarot. It flashed through my mind, this song is about a lighthouse keeper by the way. So Marko finished the song, and I did the words. Little Elegia, a poetic song, about a lone lighthouse keeper. And no symbolism, for once, direct storytelling. This song is what we can play in gigs acoustically ”.

I'm a year older than your dad. Although I've been a Nightwish fan since about 2002, I'm one of those who fell away when Tarja left, so I didn't hear Poet until about a year ago, when I watched Floor sing it at Wembley. I was watching in the living room on my laptop with headphones in. I confess here that I had to stop and leave the room to compose myself. I literally bawled like a baby that first time and had difficulty breathing for several listens afterwards. It still makes me tear up, even now. The Islander is another one that gets me every time. One thing I do love about the live version is the look on Marko's face as he _knows_ without looking that the band are there behind him, ready. That, and Floor's look of utter joy as he walks back at the end.

Most hard Nightwish fans were really toxic with Anette at that time, which is kinda sad because both albums are masterpieces, specially "Imaginaerum". I think she has a voice that fit perfectly for the more folk-ish sound Tuomas was aiming towards. It's less operatic and more jazzy, and even if Floor is unparalleled on range, power and control, Anette's departure from the band was for me a heartfelt loss. As for the emotional load of these songs, there's a couple of Nightwish songs that make me cry EVERY TIME I heard them, such as "The crow, the owl and the dove" (beautiful folky tune from Imaginaerum) and "The Greatest Show on Earth"... and well, almost all of their latest album.

It's kinda sad and funny at the same time. For me at least, since I became a fan around Dark Passion Play and I've never had this "Anette sucks" phase. Now that I'm older and I've listened them long time, I can say that Anette was the weakest of the trio, but then again... When competitors are Tarja Turunen and Floor Jansen, being last isn't a shame.

Marko got you. And a real man doesn't have to hide his tears. And the Nightwish Army only likes to see people being moved by their favorite band. And I usually cry along when that happens. Or at least tear up. lol. Floor Jansen at the tv show Beste Zangers kept making everyone cry in the studio. I'd recommend 'Winner' or 'About Love I Don't Know a Thing'. On the Beste Zangers show she sings songs from/for the other artists that were on the season. Not a competition. And they sing songs that are not the genre they are used singing in.

And, here are the links: - About Beste Zangers: There's a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers. They collect a bunch of well-known Dutch singers and put them together and let them sing for each other. Some years it's OK, some years not. 2019 they invited Floor (who is Dutch, even though she sings in the Finnish band Nightwish and lives in Sweden) and the show was a super-success and Floor suddenly became famous in Netherlands (Dutch radio NEVER plays metal, so she wasn't known there before). These links will give you an insight in the show and the first part shows the first time the other mainstream singers met Floor, our Metal Queen. It's good, it's hilarious and it's fascinating. Anette has the fate of being stuck between 2 goddesses, so you don't always hear reactors do her stuff, which is a shame, cause she's got a nice voice. It's just not a deep dark opera, which, they were wanting to move away from that, and that was a lot of the drama. Many fans really liked her, but a lot didn't. There was her getting sick, just a whole bunch of stuff. Anyways, check her out on Scaretale sometime soon. Nightwish doesn't sit around the campfire, campfire sits around the Nightwish. (I stole that one). You can get your Marco and Tarja fix at the same time with these songs: "The Siren", "Dead to the World", "Feel for You", "Planet Hell". The double reaction is a good idea, I'd like to see more of that, the live, then the studio. A good suggestion for early Marco is Tarot - WIngs of Darkness (1986 version). The video of course, you would never recognize him if you didn't know it was him.

Once we even went together in 2 cars to a 1000km distant concert! Why two cars? Because there was also my friend with us who introduced me to Nightwish, my sister, and then my 5 years old niece, sister's daughter :) They almost stopped her from entering the arena cause she was so young, but we begged, explained we traveled from so far away, and they let her in :)

I think what makes Nightwish so masterful at bringing out emotions is Tuomas’ ability to create cinematic and theatrical melodies. For Nightwish, “symphonic metal” is almost too generic of a genre for them. They’re in their own genre that can be called theatrical metal or cinematic metal. Their songs are really just epic moments filled with these amazing melodies and sounds. Everything is always an in-your-face wall of sound that gives you chills every freakin’ time. It’s incredible. On another note, for more amazing Marko vocals, check out Master Passion Greed off the same record as The Islander. It’s arguably Nightwish’s heaviest song they’ve ever done.

This is probably one of my all time favorite Nightwish songs because it's so simple and different. There's no greater meaning behind it. Marco had a fun idea for a song that didn't fit well with Tarot, Tuomas liked it and decided to put it in Dark Passion Play, they finished the song together and it became THE Marco solo song. Something crafted perfectly for him as a performer for a nice little intermission in a concert.

I loved your reaction to this song. You said this exactly right: "I feel like it's calling me home." Folk music awakens something primal inside, as if voices of ancestors are calling and you are taken to times you've never lived, see scenery you've never seen. God, family, and music like Nightwish's was really the only thing that got me through being diagnosed with Stage 3 Pancreatic cancer and the following painful horror of 27 rounds of Level 3 Radiation and chemo at the age of 31. To this day there will be times when I listen to this song and just loose it, remembering being when I first got this Nightwish CD I didn't get a chance to actually listen to it until I was on the road, driving home from my Chemotherapy appointment. There I was 31 years old battling Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer, my body in exceptional pain from the Radiation and Chemo, my future, my life so very uncertain, living in the reality that I was very very sick and how this sickness was affecting my half-side and our four kids (2 girls and twin special needs boys)... then I heard these lyrics for the very first time. I had to literally, pull my car over to the side of the road as I just sobbed, releasing all the intense emotion of my situation, my reality. The beauty of this song, to me could only come from God, it was a reminder that God would only give me what He knows I am strong enough to handle, that I had God's love and He was there with me, even then, right at that moment as I sat sobbing in my car listening to this beautiful Nightwish song. As always, listen, appreciate, and enjoy!! God Bless!!!

The actual Mira le of nightwish is the ability of Tuomas to translate emotions into music, and the incredible luck he has had to find musicians ( to varying degrees all the singers included) that can not only identify that emotion, but share it and project it. I've said before , that nightwish is able to project joy.. wether that be bitter sweet joy, dark joy, or outright bliss.. into their playing, especially live They are music for music's sake, and that is so stunningly rare nowadays. It's not about a hook, or riff, or image. it's about music moving you in whichever direction it wants to , and a remarkable band that is willing to simply ride that wave and embellish it without forcing it. I think it's why things like, crazy guitar solos, or frankly and big singular moments over and over again would seem arrogant to the song, and why they don't do them. It's funny, because I've heard fan boys ask why Kai would choose nightwish over only playing in winter Sun, which is more technical and challenging. I disagree. Being able to be part of a singular experience and only do what makes that experience complete is so much harder than "musically masturbating". Don't get me wrong, I love Winter Sun a lot, but I would bet, if you asked, Kai would say that this ride is more challenging and more musically and emotionally satisfying in a different level. Nightwish isn't a band, it's a group of musicians creating an experience, and that why it makes people breakdown at shows and why it is responsible for so many goosebumps.

Floor's t-shirt: "My husband has a tank".... Irene Jansen's child's t-shirt: "My uncle has a tank!"..... Marco's t-shirt: "Floor is my back-up singer!"..... Ok so after hunderds of listening to the studio version and..almost a hundred of the Tampere version, I just realized a moment: So Marco is pulling down the intensity, in the second chorus, now consider the lyrics, he is singing about a sailor on a ship without the name saying farewell to the world, while sitting there on the chair alone, his voice fades away with the ..."left behind a long ago".. hits the feeling od loneliness...AND THEN the rest of the band comes in, like no man, no kind of loneliness, not on our watch! I probably made is up, but man... As soon this all came together in my head, this song hitted harder then ever.

"I feel like it [folk metal] is calling me home... if that makes sense". Yes. Yes it does. Perfect sense. I don't know the flavour of folk you've been having with your metal in general (different countries have their own traditional folk music), but this particular piece has a major Celtic vibe and the low whistle Troy is playing here is an Irish instrument, as are his uilleann pipes. Irish music often has that coming-home feel to me, as does Scottish, but I do have roots in both countries (I'm English, dad's Scottish, got a couple of Irish 4th great grandparents) so I don't know if that's why or if it's a thing everybody feels. The Irish in particular have a really rich musical culture and the welcoming aspect is very much part of that - everyone joins in. But I completely understand you, it's warm and solid and comforting and just... yeah. Like I belong to it. Or it belongs to me. It's hard to express in words.

Dude I feel you and I agree completely. There's just something about folk metal and symphonic metal that just really speaks to me. With Symphonic metal it's that blend of the classical instruments (especially violin and cello) and the choir within a metal framework. They don't call Tuomas the Metal Mozart for nothing. With folk metal its the traditional instruments combined with the metal. It's why I love any Nightwish song where Troy plays. OK I love any Nightwish song but you get the idea. Those traditional instruments just strip away the modern, electronic, technological world we all inhabit now where we're all semi-isolated and insulated from each other and wake up that part that sleeps in the back of my brain that remembers when we all lived much closer to each other and much more attuned to the natural world. The islander just makes me feel like I'm walking on the edge of a high cliff overlooking the crashing waves of the ocean far below in ancient Ireland or Scotland.

@@krakon6565 I have always known about Nightwish. But was during Imaginaerum I gave in. Balled my eyes out during so many songs. What a wonderful ride is has been since then.

I get that folk hitting home feeling. I don't know why but it feels so comfortable and heartwarming and quite litteraly like home I always get that sitting at a campfire on a summer night with friends vibe from it. It's hard to discribe but I can relate

This song and this performance are simply beautiful. I'm also always struck by how they scheduled this song right at sunset.

It makes absolute sense. You must have the blood of the Celts or the Norse in you. I cry when I hear the pipes....I cry when I hear those melodies. It hits something very deep in my soul. It is a soul yearning...a feeling of wanting to go “Home”....which can only be something like an ancestral memory of where we came from. I’ve been to Scotland twice and it was deeply emotional, as my family came from there. I could FEEL the land weeping....such a sad history there. Robert Plant was asked one time about his music by a very good interviewer......”so much of your music has a sense of yearning in it”....if that makes sense. Robert replied that yes...the Welsh have an actual name in the Welsh tongue for soul yearning. Leave it to the Celts to have a name for soul yearning. That feeling is in the blood. Robert admitted to having that feeling of yearning his whole life, and it comes through so strongly in his last two albums. It’s also an awareness of the passing of time, and the fleeting essence of our lives.

The word is "hiraeth", which is beautiful by itself even without knowing the meaning. I'm half Scottish with Welsh ancestry, and I get this entirely.

I keep missing the premiers by minutes but oh well, i jumped as soon as i saw this one. I really love this song, both versions are fantastic, although I prefer live because of a couple of reasons, Floor being there (Anette does a great job in backing vocals, but Floor is just....Floor), Marko getting the spotlight in the 'island', his doubleneck badass instrument that I know thanks to you more of now, his sense of humor, the different arrangement with the vocal improvisation at the end...it's just amazing I'm not surprised you got emotional there because the song really feels like that, it's just too beautiful

I get what you mean, man. I hear music like this, and I feel homesick for places I've never been physically. It is a gut punch to the soul.
