In memory of Niki Lauda's incredible F1 career, the 81st Goodwood Members' Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport saw a brilliant demonstration of his final F1 car - the McLaren MP4/2B from 1985. Long-time McLaren test driver Chris Goodwin took the car out for some truly evocative laps of the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Are you serious? Did you not look at the tachometer during the in car shots? The engine never once went above 6,000 rpm. Look, I understand they need to protect these older engines but what we saw in this video is not even close to what the original turbo cars (circa 1985) sounded like.

Beautiful John Barnard design evolution of the MP4/1C-MP4/2-MP4/2B. This varient had the new rear pushrod suspension and smaller fuel tank to comply with the 1985 rules.

Absolute masterclass! That was exceptionally clean and astute driving from Chris Goodwin. First few laps super smooth, but by 5 minutes in you suddenly felt as if were watching a qualifying lap. He never drove 10/10ths but he did wind it up to a delightfully brisk pace. More onboard views, please! The shifting was sublimely judged and executed. And running out of fuel on the cool down lap and coasting in (barely) was the chef's kiss. Perfectly judged demonstration in all regards. Wow.

Nowadays all of those drivers are complaining about bumpy circuit, no grip, too many races per year. Lauda, Hunt, Steward, Piquet, Prost, Senna etc. got into their cars and did the job without pitlane ideas

I think you're idolising those drivers. Back then we didn't have constant access to radio communication. And if they indeed complained less, well don't forget that back then it was rather pointless because there weren't a bunch of settings to adjust during the race. And the ride was much less bumpy with higher clearance and softer suspension. Finally, in the 60's Steward et al. only had 9 - 11 races per season and from the mid 70's - 2004 it stayed around 16, with 10 European races in a row. Now it's 24 races all over the planet.
